#OTD in 1943 more than 200 British aircrafts bombed Turin with a mix of conventional and incendiary bombs. 792 people died and around 1000 were wounded that night. It was the worst attack of the more than 100 attack that the city suffered. #WarInItaly @histodons @militaryhistory
#OnThisDay in #history - in 1543, Kateryn Parr married Henry VIII, becoming his last wife (aka 'survived'). Named for his 1st wife (Katherine of Aragon), Kateryn was a fierce intellectual who, like her namesake, held her own as England's regent when Henry fought France in 1544 (just as KoA did in 1513). She also was a published author whose works are still included in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer today. Their marriage ended in 1547 with his death. #OTD#histodons@royalhistory@histodons
AWAITING DESTRUCTION--Old Pacific Electric cars are piled up at a junkyard on Terminal Island, in CA 1956. Parts Terminal Island w/in LA Port and Long Beach Port--used now for parking containers.
In the interwar years and mid-20th C. many US cities made fateful decisions for our climate in abandoning electric street railways for freeways & autos, none more than Los Angeles.

As many people know (but I'll point it out anyway), the conspiracy between GM, Firestone, and Standard Oil to destroy streetcar systems is what the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit is all about. One of these Pacific Electric cars is featured toward the beginning of the movie.
Jt. v. Chr. aussagen!
(EN)Update #Azerbaijan: We started to survey the #kurgans to be examined. Some of these are being explored for the first time. We are curious what they will tell us about social #inequality between the 4th and 1st millennium BC! #archaeology@histodons @archaeodons
The so-called ‘Tellus’ relief from the Ara Pacis is my all time favourite relief. The details are mesmerising with so much layered symbolism built in from the infant twins to the vegetation.
The Augustan style often calls for abundance to be on full show and this relief captures that idea in spades.
A skilful and jaw-dropping relief not to be missed!

It's the Day of Hermes aka Mercurius Day aka #Wednesday! 🐏
Marble sculpture of #Hermes. After rediscovery in 1771 near #Rome, he was displayed at Lansdowne House in London. The sculpture's right leg and the palm tree originally came from a different ancient statue.
