After weeks of limited information, the British Library blog has been updated with a much more detailed statement from the chief executive. A phased return of some more services is due in the New Year.
After low-turnout referendum in support, #Venezuela looks to have formally fully annexed (absorbed) the disputed #GuayanaEsequiba / #Essequibo region, currently controlled by #Guyana. It had previously labeled it on maps as a special "zone in reclamation".
Venezuela also says it will create new state/province to (theoretically) govern the area, but apparently hasn't done so quite yet.
This is going to be a drawn out mess which no one except Maduro wins, since it's in his interest to distract from the problems in Venezuela and to bolster his chances of reelection in Presidential elections in 2024. He doesn't have to do much, just rattle sabres every now and then to keep it in the news.
The biggest losers are likely to be the Venezuelans who fled to surrounding countries (including Guyana) due to the collapse of the Venezeulan economy, and who are likely to face a backlash of sorts.
@bluewave@polgeonow@geography As Venezuelan I can say that I voted for recuperating the Essequibo and I support every plan about creating the new state, but I'll won't vote for Maduro in the 2024 elections. Honestly I want changes in this country, but if this thing keeps getting worse, I'll sadly leave.

Der Klimaschutz - auch als Fluchtgrund - ist schon jetzt ganz klar in der Allgemeinen Erklärung der Menschenrechte enthalten. So z.B. in den Artikeln 22 und 25, sowie in der Konvention über die Verhütung und Bestrafung von Völkermord (Art 2c)
Inwieweit es sinnvoll wäre, das in einer zusätzlich Konvention (z.B. analog der UN-BRK) explizit auszudefinieren, ist auf jeden Fall bedenkenswert. Könnte aber auch - versehtlich oder vorsätzlich - zu Schlupflöchern führen.
@K_Reuss_Manaus@geography ja es gibt wichtige Schritte in die richtige Richtung und auch im GCM und GCR wird der Umweltwandel als Faktor für Migrationsentscheidungen anerkannt. Jedoch bleiben die Formulierungen sehr vage und es gibt derzeit noch keine rechtlichen Mechanismen, die umgesetzt werden können. Aber ich sehe es wie sie Menschen in Notlagen haben immer das Recht sich in Sicherheit zu bringen. Auch im Vorfeld von Umweltereignissen!

"Bharat" is already India's name in most local languages, including Hindi, and is mentioned as a synonym of "India" in the English version of the country's constitution, but hasn't been used in formal international contexts until now.
The name "#India" was already used by the Ancient Greeks more than 2000 years ago, though some in the region associate it more now with the #UK's colonial subjugation of the country in the 1700s-1900s.
@austinkocher@geography Cesar Caviedes, my Geography of South America professor, acknowledged that my interest in international migration was better suited for human geography, but advised me to approach it from demography through sociology. He correctly predicted the turn to remote sensing would drive funding in geography.
