Nah, they’ve changed since the old days. Look at how much is released completely uncensored on the Switch compared to PlayStation - Sony’s rules are significantly stricter.
When it comes to emulation and game preservation though…ha, no - Nintendo have stayed just as bad and clueless as ever
This isn’t Nintendo “defying” anything, they’re just going with the times.
Clarification: There is no law specifically banning gay marriage in Japan(it’s just not included yet), courts support giving gay people constitutional protection, they legally reckognize gay marriage if married in another country, around 70% of people openly support it, etc.
There are also dozens of large cities and wards that have a “civil union” style system that helps with the strict apartment renting system in Japan and similar things like having a right to see your loved one in a hospital, some add provisons so gay couple can adopt as well.
I mean, legality aside, lots of companies have suffered financially for doing anything perceived as supporting anything LGBTQ lately. Target, Starbucks, Bud, etc. They’re definitely defying the urge to stay silent and neutral when it seems best to for business.
I not sure if there’s that cause and effect. It’s probably more something in the lines of:
“How can we turn around this failing business? I know! Let’s openly support LGBTQ! That will make people return to buy our product. Oh no! People didn’t care.”
Those businesses weren’t failing. The decline in sales is perfectly timed with right wing outrage. 30-40% of this country is now triggered by rainbows.
Their stock prices dropped because they missed previous earnings. SBUX and BUD are up big since they beat. Share prices are closely correlated with earnings FYI.
Stop pulling nonsense out of your ass to elicit an emotional reaction.
Be as emotional as you want, I don’t care, I told you to stop pulling nonsense out of your ass. This was never a conversation, I’m not interested in watching you try to move the goal posts until you stumble on something correct. Don’t spread misinformation in the first place.
Am I? So far you’ve called two people emotional and illiterate and projected your anger onto people who are calling you out on the bullshit you’re spreading.
But am I also annoyed that people like you say whatever the fuck you want on the internet to drum up unwarranted outrage without any evidence to back it up forcing someone else to actually research it to prove your statement wrong only for your response to be stupid nonsensical forum sliding bullshit like this and by the time they’ve fact checked your fucking bullshit you’ve probably made a handful more straight up incorrect claims? Yeah, sure, who wouldn’t be.
No. Someone called me emotional, and I quoted them. Then replied that they sounded like the only emotional person in the exchange.
No one is drumming up outrage. I’m not outraged at all. You’re lashing out, and how many times are you going to type out “fucking” and “bullshit” and act like I’m the one freaking out or being hostile.
My claims haven’t been disputed. Stocks suffered. You don’t attribute it to backlash. I kind of get the feeling that there’s some relationship. But I admit there’s no way of knowing. But regardless, I could see why some companies would rather just avoid the entire thing, but I’m happy Nintendo is taking a stance instead of being silent. My original post was only intended to give them some credit.
Y’all aren’t winning anyone over by fighting with people who are willing to have a simple discussion. Not sure why you think this website needs such aggression. It’s weird. Maybe Twitter would be better for yourselves.
Again, this is not a discussion, this is also not a debate, this is me telling you to quit spreading bullshit. I don’t have to try to “win people over”, you’ve “lost them” by spreading misinformation right off the bat, which, ironically, is pretty much Twitter’s whole thing right now, but I guess every accusation is an admission with you isn’t it?
I said broadly sales went down for these companies. That was inaccurate. Bud light sales definitely did go way down. Imbev sales are doing fine. And I acknowledged quarterly sales for these companies were fine. I clarified that although my comment about sales across the board was mistake.
Nonetheless, stocks are still down, and companies tend to like to retain value for their shareholders. Now whether you don’t attribute the decline of their stocks while others are across the board have been rising is kind of a guess.
But I definitely can see why board members of these companies would be inclined to just have no take in the matter, and avoid the variable altogether. Whether it’s misguided or not, or just plain wrong. Yet I’d prefer they stand up for marginalized groups and civil rights. And that’s what Nintendo seems to be doing in this one particular instance. So I give them some credit.
Seems not worth fighting over for several days tbh. But I’m here for you.
Have they actually suffered tho, or is that just what the bigots who boycott them for having rainbows on their products are saying happened because they want to feel like they won?
They were all down because they missed previous earnings. SBUX and BUD are up big since last earnings, TGT is slightly up. American hillbillies do not determine share value.
Stocks go up, stocks go down. Outrage has a short attention span. That being said, Bud Light was weathering the criticism just fine until they back-tracked and tried to reverse it to win back the idiots. Losing the LGBT+ customers hurt them far more, and it looks unlikely that they will retain their “Official Beer of Pride” title. Hatred just isn’t profitable.
Also I had no idea the conservative backlash against these companies was so anemic. It really warms my heart to know that these bigoted fuckwits really are a loud minority.
It almost always is! There’s a lot of shit wrong in this world, but where American hillbillies choose to spend their money is absolutely not worth the media/social media attention we give it for some reason.
Cool. I think it’s generally “easier, albeit lazy and wrong, for companies to choose be silent, and I give Nintendo some credit for not going with the “easy” option.
You have to look at their customer makeup. Budweiser losing money doesn’t surprise me at all but I’m kind of surprised at Starbucks. Although they probably have a lot of Karens going there, too
In popular anime and Japanese games there are dozens of characters that are gender neutral, open cross dressers, transgender, etc. Some anime have characters that are specifically made to be gender neutral, as a part of the plot.
Individuals don’t care that much, it’s just that the culture in and of itself is a bit conservative. So long term/permanent changes take a long time to implement, specially when it comes to things like the constition and federal laws. To further illustrate: Some companies still use floppy disks…
As an example:
Felix Argyle - A male charcter in a fairly popular anime(In Japan and internationally), which dresses and acts feminine but is fully open about being male if you ask. It’s just that most people in the show don’t ask.
