Joplin got an in-app drawing feature (on Android)

Many of you probably know Joplin (the FOSS Markdown note-taking app)…

Just want to mention that Joplin has recently released an update on Android that brings a killer feature.

You can now draw within Joplin. This adds images to your markdown document and you can edit them later.

I have waited a long time for this and am happy, it’s finally there.

Now, I can get rid of “Samsung Notes”.

(You can draw by clicking the 3 dots at the top right and choosing “Draw picture”. To edit an existing one, just click once on it and press the pencil icon)

Thanks! I haven’t heard of Joplin and I’ve been experimenting with ut this throughout the week. I love the math and flowchart plugins!

Though, the feature of “Draw picture” is not available. Did you enable it somewhere? What version are you using? I have 2.12.3

Nice.

The draw feature is actually only available if installed via FDroid so far, because FDroid contains pre releases. They plan to release it everywhere this month.

I have 2.13.10 installed via FDroid.

oh, okay! heard a lot about FDroid in these (mainly FOSS) circles, but haven’t given it a go yet. What other apks have you found useful?

Aegis Authenticator, DavX5, Element for Matrix, KeePassDX, Nextcloud synchronozation client, omWeather, OsmAnd (open source navigation), Simple Calendar Pro, Vlc Player, Voyager for Lemmy

FDroid makes it easy to find the Open source version of all tge types of apps…

Yeah… Good question… I observed this feature for a month and was surprised when I found the feature. I donmt think, there is a big announcement. That’s why I posted it here.

Joplin got me through my programming course at my community college. One day my laptop ran out of battery so I hooked up my bluetooth keyboard to my phone and just took off where I left off, thanks to the cloud backup. Good memories.

Glad to see handwritten note taking functionality being built in. I use Fedora Linux on my tablet and would love to see this feature on every device and OS

Oh man - this is awesome. This might actually take me back to using a tablet and stylus for note taking in meetings. I was always a fan of taking my notes by hand, then transcribing later - handwriting rather than typing greatly assists with committing things to memory.

May I suggest Concepts? In over a decade of searching for a pencil-on-paper analog, it’s as close as I’ve found and it’s dropped my paper usage from over 1000 sheets a year to under 50. There’s a $10 (one time) cost for pdf import and export. The canvas is “infinite” but you can import a PSF of your favorite note-taking sheet, with or without guide lines/grid (or use the apps customizable grid), and copy it about the space. Then, when exporting, export just the PDF areas (The sheets/outlines you imported) into a single, paginated PDF file.

It’s available for iOS, android, and windows, though the three versions do not have synchronized feature and the files are incompatible across platforms (for now, at least). There are other paid add-ons, but I’ve not found them necessary or useful for note taking.

Looks pretty interesting, but I’m a macOS/Android user - a combination they don’t seem to support, plus I’d much rather a self-hosted solution for syncing. I’m trying to reduce my dependence on cloud services.

Fair enough, though the app is stand-alone. AFAIK there’s no sync function (I’m iOS/Windows). The files are local and export is to whatever filesystem is on the device (iOS allows any connected cloud service).

Try Obsidian, their canvas option is very similar. They have a paid sync option, but the app itself is free to use, and allows community plugins. I use one called Obsidian Livesync with my own self-hosted couchDB container. I share a vault with my partner and it syncs (mostly) flawlessly between iOS, Android, Windows and Linux. I haven’t personally used it on macOS, but it is supported as well.

I’m sure it’s good - my earlier point (two replies up) was that my basic requirements (self-hosted, Android/macOS sync) are already met by Joplin, and I can now draw in the Android version.

I’m a little wary of catbox.moe, when I first saw it the images would never load in lemmy - you’d always have to go to their website. That doesn’t seem to be the case now (also the link generated appears to be a direct link to the file) but yeah, I’m still wary.

That doesn’t quite answer my question, presumably Joplin is hosting the image on the user’s instance - you’re in feddit.de, so it uploads to feddit.de. Not all instances keep this functionality open.

For example, if I try and upload your image (either the 32kB webp or the 60kB jpeg) using the lemm.ee website, I get the error:

Uploaded image is too large!

I’m pretty sure lemm.ee does this to avoid having illegal images hosted on their servers - it used to allow files up to 100kB. But this means the functionality in Joplin is useless to me, it simply won’t work, not unless I manually upload it elsewhere. In which case, I could use any other app to scribble an image out and then upload it.

Meanwhile, the old reddit app I used to use (Relay) would upload to imgur, all seemlessly in the background, then paste the link code in my comment. This kind of functionality is what I would like to see.

I’m generally against hosting files on instances, anyway. It creates extra server load.

Joplin has nothing to do with Lemmy. I think they were answering about where Lemmy stores the image they posted. But Joplin would presumably store your drawings alongside the other assets associated with your notes, in its own local storage and whichever sync storage you have configured for it.

I still wish there was a lemmy client that would upload to a specific 3rd party hosting site, rather than using the lemmy instance’s internal hosting.

It seems like you misunderstand what Joplin is? Or I misunderstand what you are saying… I don’t know…

Joplin is a note taking app that fully works on markdown. You can use it on your local PC, but you can also synchronize the notes over devices.

Joplin is hosting the image on the user’s instance - you’re in feddit.de, so it uploads to feddit.de.

Joplin and Lemmy have nothing to do with each other. I have just taken a screenshot of the rendered markdown document in my Joplin app, switched to my web browser, opened feddit.de and posted the screenshot in this community.

If you want to say that using Joplin just to draw and post pictures somewhere, would be a bad idea… Yes, that’s right. But it’s primarily a note-taking app, so that’d be expected… And usually, the notes are private and nothing you want to regularly post online…

Well, Lemmy is a decentralized system. Hosting all image resources on a centralized service (imgur) is probably not what the majority wants…

I’m not talking about the majority, though, I’m talking about an app picking a 3rd party image host rather than relying on the user’s instance. Ideally such a lemmy client could have options on where to host things, if the developer was willing to cater to multiple APIs.

It uses the normal markdown syntax of an image. They probabaly store the image as a SVG and include it and store somewhere that you have drawn it, so that you can edit it…

Update: I tried it out and it seems to work.

I was able to enter:

tag:hello tag:world test

and the search found only the document that had both tags and the word test.

And

tag:hello tag:world

for example does not give me notes in the search result with only one of the tags…

So, what you want, was probably implemented.

Update:

It works for real! The interface is still a bit clunky but holy hell the tags make a world of difference for me. Amazing!
