I’m waiting for Japanese-to-English translation tbh. I know it’ll take time, but it’s worth shouting it into the ether.

Oh yeah btw, here's the Firefox Picture-in-Picture tutorial for KDE Wayland, so you don't have to click Reddit:I’m not 100% sure if this is everyone’s experience, but when running Firefox with Wayland (not as an xwayland window), Picture-in-Picture windows don’t stay above by default. If you are similarly afflicted, the workaround is literally ten clicks away (assuming you have a scroll wheel) using Window Rules. You could create and fill the rule manually, but now that I’ve mentioned the ten clicks thing I’m committed to only using clicks in this quick how-to. Step 1: Right click an open Picture-in-Picture window. In the context menu, select “More Actions” -> “Configure Special Window Settings…”. This will populate most of the window settings for you. Step 2: Click “Add Property…” and select “Window title”. The newly added row’s text field should read “Picture-in-Picture”. Change the dropdown option from “Unimportant” to “Exact Match”. (All PiP windows in Firefox use this title and by making it Exact Match the rule shouldn’t affect any other Firefox windows.) Step 3: Click “Add Property…” again and this time select “Keep above other windows”. The dropdown in the newly added row should be set to “Apply Initially”. Select the “Yes” radio button if it isn’t already. Step 4: Click “OK”. That’s it. No more manually setting Keep Above every time you open a PiP.

Hate to burst your bubble, but no-one was actually using XMPP with Google Talk except for open-source tech nerds.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

How so? I don’t see the EEE in Google discontinuing XMPP support tbh.

Shrek 2 is mid as fuck and the cover of I Need a Hero was its only saving grace. I really don’t get why people ham it up as one of the best films of all time.

New extensions you’ll love now available on Firefox for Android (blog.mozilla.org)

Today, Mozilla announced more than 450 new extensions (software that adds new features or functionality to the browser) to users on Firefox for Android at Mozilla’s AMO Android page. This milestone marks the launch of a new open extension ecosystem on mobile where developers are now free to create and publish extensions and...

Bypass Paywalls was removed by Mozilla IIRC. It is on GitHub though so you can just install the .xpi just fine.

Was going to say that Consent-o-Matic wasn’t on Android but there’s now a banner that says when it’s compatible. That extension has really saved me a lot of time, got it on my Android phone.

Sony also did this same rollout in the same time-span. PS4 was released in 2013, Pro version was in 2016. It’s been about three years since the PS5 was released so it checks out.

I liked the gameplay and environmental of Watch_Dogs 2 more (edit: on the latter, it’s about how lively WD2 felt compared to 2077), but Cyberpunk 2077 is still solid. As someone else said, there’s replay value to the different routes you can take. I’d definitely wait for the base game to go on sale though. I got mine for £25 and I think that’s an alright price for it.

Is linux good for someone tech illererate.

Now i’ve been considering moving to linux. I don’t have much of a history using a computer and find it tougher to use than my phone. But I also really appreciate the foss movement. I’ve currently got an old laptop running windows 11 I think and it would prolly speed up with linux too. But I’m afraid I’d fuck smth up...

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Yeah, don’t use Arch if you’re new to Linux and not tech-literate. You seem pretty interested in Linux Mint from other comments here, I’d say give that a go.

Serious question since I don’t use iMessage whatsoever, what’s going on with the iMessage stuff? Seems like multiple companies recently have tried to make apps that connect to iMessage, but there’s nothing I’ve heard about Apple opening that up. Did something happen for this to suddenly pop up more frequently?

I had a pretty bad experience with the Paragon NTFS3 drivers a couple years ago. Basically the kernel hung, maybe from this, maybe not, but it ended up with filesystem corruption on my hard drives.

Thankfully, Windows was able to fix it but until recently I relied on NTFS-3G. Paragon’s NTFS3 driver seems to be faring a lot better nowadays.

FWIW, some firmware allow changing it during the update procedure. I remember having to update my ThinkPad’s firmware and it had that option.

For whatever reason, Windows 11 is worse at Cyberpunk 2077 than Arch for me. Constant stuttering. It might be that Arch has much less going on than Windows, but it’s enough for me to use Linux as my main gaming OS now.

Not just that, soon after the US election, the UK will be gearing up for their General Election. Latest is the end of January 2025 according to a quick search.

It’s going to be bittersweet in a way because of Labour not being particularly great either, but yeah, they’ve had it coming for a very long time.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

It basically means instead of relying on a bootloader (e.g. GRUB or systemd-boot) the computer boots the kernel directly. Generally there should be no change besides having to use the BIOS menu to manually select a kernel.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

No problem! :)

FWIW, a lot of the DIY distros (Arch and Gentoo being the ones on most minds) allow this already so it’s nothing new. It’s just Fedora implementing it that’s new I guess. If you’re curious, the term to search is “EFISTUB”.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Presume so, that’s what the article claims:

This latest UKI work for Fedora will lead to better UEFI Secure Boot support, better supporting TPM measurements and confidential computing, and a more robust boot process.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I’d imagine that if you want a bootloader, the option is there as well. I can’t imagine Fedora just doing away with that unless the bootloaders themselves are unmaintained.

Not so much an expert rather than just parroting what I saw, but according to a cursory search, and a Twitter community note I saw from a friend, the voice used by this project is Synthesizer V, which is actually a perfectly legitimate piece of software for using digital voices in music production. If you’ve heard of Vocaloid, or know about Hatsune Miku, SynthV is basically a competitor in that space.

Going back to the community note, the voice used is actually called Natalie, and apparently the TOS of SynthV does not allow use of its voices using a name that’s different to what was given. So they essentially can’t present the Natalie voice as Anna, which they are.

EDIT: I want to clarify that these voice synthesisers like SynthV and Vocaloid are usually based on the recording of someone who has consented to the use of their voice in that regard and has been paid for it. It’s not like the current AI voice cloning trend going on.

“It’s pretty scary, but it’s scary in the sense of how stupid music already is anyway, so it’s not that frightening. Like, ‘This thing can make a pop song!’ Have you heard a pop song? Great. Let it go. Unleash the beast, you know – holy shit would that ever open up the niche market for actual musicianship.”

~ deadmau5 during an interview with MusicTech.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

No prob! These digital voices have been around for over a decade now, maybe more. Some of them use “AI” to improve the sound of the voice (i.e. support more languages than actually recorded, make it sound realistic) but not in the way that current AI voice trends are going.

To be honest, even if they undo that, the damage is done. Trust is lost. And to be honest, after hearing what Spez said about the vulnerable people who post on his site, I wouldn’t want to touch the site even if I liked the official app.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

If I recall, VR support in Linux is quite spotty as well. I can trust that Valve will invest some time into getting this to work, but a lot of the PC gaming market share is still Windows so it makes sense to support them first.

Is there a Spotify alternative that has no ads?

I pay for Spotify for 7 years or so now and i'm so sick of all the ads. After every update there seems to be an: oops, sorry, you have ads now. Podcasts are filled with ads. I was just listening to a podcast where they shoved in 3 ads mid-sentence. How long until musicians put ads in their songs. I'm just so sick of it.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Used both (currently on AM but used Deezer thanks to a free trial).

They both have their exclusives and they might do something in relation to, say, a new album launch, but I’ve not had any blatant advertising on either of them. Apple’s Podcast app on iOS is free, if they have an iPhone.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I’ve got two, from Spotify and Apple Music.

Both have Steps as my favourite artist which mostly isn’t surprising. The top song on the two differ, though - for Spotify it’s Samo mi se spava by Serbian singer Luke Black, and Apple Music it’s Twisted by Australian prog metal band Voyager. Both artists entered Eurovision 2023, though Twisted wasn’t the entry.

Awaiting ListenBrainz’s which’ll be released in the new year, as that will have some of the most accurate data, as it includes things from my local library

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

man I used to listen to them and Krewella a lot when I was 16-18 lol. I’ve still got a soft spot for that era of EDM.

I used it at university. I don’t think anyone there complained about it, and these people were not Linux users…

Flaky, (edited )
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Seems like the opposite of what happened to No Man’s Sky, initially praised at first then started getting complaints, whereas NMS was the opposite - a game that had major issues on launch (unhelped by overpromising) but built itself up to be a solid game afterwards.

Bethesda should take a page from Hello Games’ book and fix the issues prevalent in the game then do the press stuff later. That also worked for Cyberpunk 2077, FWIW.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Yup. But in any case, that reputation sticks. The point was, fix the major issues with the game then go do the press. NMS and Cyberpunk have both done that.

I finally switched back to Linux as my daily driver after a couple of years of being on nothing but Windows.

I ran Manjaro Linux as my daily driver a few years ago but slowly phased it out for Windows for some reason, and I’m finally back using Linux (currently Linux Mint). I gotta say, I don’t know why I ever switched back to Windows. There’s just so much freedom Linux gives you right off the bat that Windows is just plain...

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I’ve been playing Cyberpunk 2077 on Linux just fine as well, and Forza Horizon 4 (though the Xbox account setup was a rigmarole). Only thing I had to do was use bluetoothctl to set up my Xbox Series X/S controller, as it uses Bluetooth to connect and it doesn’t work with KDE’s Bluetooth setting GUI.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I always think about going back to Windows, but then I snap myself out of it seeing what Microsoft are doing. I still have a virtual machine for MusicBee (which… isn’t the greatest in WINE, I’ll just say that much) but everything else works fine. Also had a pretty good experience with Apple Music in Waydroid, with scrobbler support (Pano Scrobbler)

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

My workflow is too married to MusicBee to do that lol, it’s the reason I keep a Windows VM handy nowadays (okay, and Apple Music if I need to do some playlist things)

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I’m having weird issues with my Wifi where it will just suddenly stop working (Plasma will show “no available connections”) and I have to hard reset the machine because Linux won’t shut down otherwise. It’s not a hardware issue since it doesn’t happen on Windows.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Will need to. The issue is that it happens at random and I haven’t found the actual cause yet. I am using macOS for a project right now though, so that’s kept me busy too.

Same for the fediverse tbh. I’ve actually seen people treat it like an exclusive nerd club, then wonder why people are staying on Twitter or choosing Bluesky instead.

Looks nice! You might want to share it to the Firefox CSS community, too: !firefoxcss

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

and if Firefox is about giving the user a choice, if they want it to look like Opera, why stop them?

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

And even when they say tab hibernation does exist, they’re calling OP a dumbass. If I did that to my friends who want to try Linux, they’d be back on Windows in a heartbeat.

I’ve also been shouted at here for telling a user asking about Vivaldi that the culture here does not like Chromium-based browsers like it and they likely won’t get their answer here. It’s like they wanted me to shut up and not criticise their behaviour.

Thinking on creating a guide on leaving Twitter etc. for creators, etc., some tips on what it should include? (kbin.social)

A lot of artists, etc. are reluctant to leave corporate social media like Twitter, due to fears over the Fediverse (usually spread by other people, that think Fediverse = Gab + some cryprobros + maybe Pawoo), or not willing to understand it....

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I’m friends with a furry artist and he wouldn’t join fedi mainly due to fears from fediblocking, unhelped by how fandom drama gets in general, not just in the furry sphere, and major drama with mastodon.art using some grifter’s block list which blocks like over 50% of the fediverse.

From what I’ve learned, being friends with him and other artists (and following ones I’m interested in), a lot of creators want a ready-made audience to advertise their artwork to, which was where Twitter came into play and why a lot of them are going for Bluesky instead since it’s recreated that experience for them. It gets hairier when it comes to NSFW content, too, since some places on the fediverse are absolutely fine with it on their timeline, and some places are definitely not. Though Bluesky has popularised CWs for adult content in that sphere, some instances don’t like users posting NSFW and will request it be unlisted if it’s allowed at all.

If the creator is SFW only, they’ll have a lot of good luck using a general purpose Mastodon instance, unless they find a community that suits them better. Joinmastodon.org has a good list, and a lot of them don’t have that networking issue except with very fringe instances.
