mojo, in What are your favorite Lemmy instances?

literature.cafe , but something happened today and they’re temp shut down judging by the web page :(

hopefully they’ll be back up and restored soon, the VM seems to have gotten hacked.

Wu9fee,
@Wu9fee@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh I liked this one. I wonder what happened.

mark, in Rio – The Twitter-Platform where Birds can leave their Nests
@mark@programming.dev avatar

What do you think of this?

Think it’s a terrible idea. For some reason people dont get that many of us are on the fediverse because we want to get as far away from anything that even remotely resembles, copies, piggybacks off of, or otherwise has anything to do with corporate-owned, centralized, ad-infested, user-hostile, privacy-invasive, social media platforms.

kobra,

and you can still have that in whatever defederated safe zone you want. i’m sick of this “the fediverse isn’t for the masses” sentiment. YOUR community might not be but, the fediverse is literally made for the masses.

i don’t necessarily agree with OPs ideas, but not because they’re trying to attract new people to the fediverse.

drspod,

i’m sick of this “the fediverse isn’t for the masses” sentiment.

The previous commenter didn’t say anything to indicate that is their opinion. They said:

Which one of

  • corporate owned
  • centralized
  • ad-infested
  • user-hostile
  • privacy-invasive

is synonymous with “the fediverse is not for the masses,” in your opinion?

kobra,

I mean, you should ask @mark where they got those bullet points, I didn’t see them in OPs post about bird marketing either.

I took their post to be insinuating that those negatives all come with large masses of people joining a platform but ultimately I don’t know if there was enough context in the post to know.

squaresinger,

Read his post again. He clearly states that he doesn’t want stuff that piggybacks/copies services like that.

To put it differently, he doesn’t like that the OP tires to piggyback off twitters (former) branding.

leraje,
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

How on Earth do you get the idea that expressing distaste for mainstream social media methods is saying ‘the fediverse isn’t for the masses’?

blue_berry,
@blue_berry@lemmy.world avatar

At the end of the day marketing is just about telling stories, humans always did that it wasn’t like invented by big corps. I just think Mastodon is really bad at telling stories.

I don’t necessarily think copy old Twitter. Just use some ideas (birds) and develop them further with the idea of interoperability which makes it unique. That’s exactly what Mastodon has done in the technical squere.

s4if, in Question: Where is federated content stored?
@s4if@lemmy.my.id avatar

On all instances. Each instance has copy of what happened and every action is relayed by community instance (in this case, Beta) to all subscriber of the community.

drekly,

So if I make an instance, I can scrape all the content and gather data on every user and sell it to Cambridge analytica?

s4if,
@s4if@lemmy.my.id avatar

Technically, yes. But if you are caught red handed, be ready for the mass ban to your account/instance.

drekly,

But if it’s just sat there silently data gathering, nobody would know?

r00ty,
@r00ty@kbin.life avatar

What info do you think they will get? The only info is what you put in the public info on the user profile on your instance. So they can get your username (well user@instance), avatar, about info. That's about it. Anything else like email address and password hashes are only stored on the instance you signed up to.

drekly,

Every single comment and post anyone ever names and anything they are subscribed to. Run everyone’s content through some sentiment analysis, and now you have a great set of users, emails and their IP, grouped into interests, general mood, and political leanings, perfect for advertising.

r00ty,
@r00ty@kbin.life avatar

Where are you getting email and ip from?

s4if,
@s4if@lemmy.my.id avatar

Yup, that is what professional/corporate scrapper do from the very beginning. Fediverse has poor privacy, and it is designet that way. It is better to share only safe content to fediverse for our safety, and share more private things on messaging/chatting apps like matrix or email only to person we trust.

Blaze, in Some instances have gone down recently, does anyone know why?
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Just noted that the following seems down as well

GroteStreet,
AtaKe, in Want to move on from Mastodon, but so confused on what platform to choose

I was going to join calckey.social/firefish.social but I’m a little hesitant now because mastodon.art defederated with it, and I follow multiple accounts from that instance.

I’m on calckey.world, and it seems to be federated with mastodon.art. at least post from there appear on my global feed

Apollo2323, in Peertube appears to have doubled their MAU

292 TB wow that’s is a lot of data , how much data does YouTube have saved then? Exabytes?

theterrasque,

Is it? Is it really? I have about 50tb total in storage, and I’m fairly budget conscious. I know people who have hundreds of TB storage.

300TB is in range of what a normal middle class person can put together on a hobby basis.

Apollo2323,

The maximum I have is like 20 TB.

haui_lemmy, in Mastodon and today's fediverse are unsafe by design and unsafe by default
@haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com avatar

The exact opposite is true. I am part of a very small minority and I made my own fediverse instances. Everyone who tries to go ableist/racist/misogynist or whathaveyou gets the boot. Very easy solution indeed.

The issue right now is how hard it is to set up an instance. In my opinion, every router on the world should have instances running (and tunneled to not dox themselves) so people are not dependent on big instances.

I would downvote this since it’s misleading af but it also sparks debate so I‘ll refrain.

maegul, in is stop.voring.me dead again?
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

The admin (same as firefish.social) is distracted by school and work and appears to be absent from maintenance work. In the short to medium term, I wouldn’t bet on any reliability.

It does seem that they’re still committing to the code base relatively recently, so the project is probably not dead.

otter, in PSA: Sh.itjust.works is currently encountering issues
@otter@lemmy.ca avatar

Thanks for sharing, I wonder what happened

Blaze,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

You can join the Matrix space in the instance sidebar to have a look. Basically, it’s a storage issue, but the admins have to investigate (I’m pretty sure they are still asleep as of now)

slazer2au, in What existing organizations should start hosting fediverse instances? Which ones are already doing so?

I am slightly shocked that Mozilla doesn’t have any fediverse services up and running.

Tywele,

But they do, don’t they? mozilla.social

matt,
@matt@lemmy.world avatar

They also host a Matrix instance at chat.mozilla.org!

wiki_me, in What existing organizations should start hosting fediverse instances? Which ones are already doing so?

tbh IMO i Don’t think you could persuade them to do that, the whole make decentralized social media more decentralized is not something that will have significant value to them, would be better to have some volunteer led non profit with a governance model that has a decentralized power structure as the “default” option.

snowe, in How long does it take for the fediverse to "forget" an instance?
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

Lemmy will mark your instance as forgotten in 3 days if I remember correctly

MargotRobbie, in Does it feel like the fediverse is exclusively used by older tech nerds?
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know what you’re talking about, I’m just your average Hollywood celebrity here to promote my new movie “Barbie”, only in theaters July 21st.

Nyanix,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

I like to think we’re all here like “hah hah, look it’s Margot Robbie” and in a wild turn of events, find out that it actually was all along

MargotRobbie,
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

No one will ever believe you.

Nyanix,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

omg I’ve been noticed by the Margo Robbie ;)

MrFlamey,

There has to be at least one celebrity that would rather be surfing the fediverse than doing celebrity stuff with other hot celebrities. I would be shocked to find out it was Margot Robbie, but not shocked if it was Nicholas Cage.

MargotRobbie,
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, we did try to get Nic Cage to play a Barbie, but apparently there are roles that even he won’t do.

kmkz_ninja,

This is where the illusion falls apart because Nic Cage would totally play Barbie.

MargotRobbie,
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah that’s what we all thought too, I for one was pretty disappointed.

Maybe you can ask him to play a Barbie in the sequel?

Nyanix,
@Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

I know George Takei is on Mastodon, I’d love to see what celebs make it to Lemmy

originalucifer, in How long does it take for the fediverse to "forget" an instance?
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

if youre talking about activitypub federation, does it matter what software you use? theres a reason its a standard protocol.

i would hope that any instance of any federating software would just pick up where it left off with regards to activitypub.. cept your server will be throwing a lot of 'content not found'.

now, other pleroma or derivatives might be speaking with your instance over some custom api, and that obviously wouldnt work.. but so?

Zeppo, in How long does it take for the fediverse to "forget" an instance?

It’s not really possible to answer without knowing which specific software you mean. Not sure why that’s a secret.

verarr,
@verarr@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, ok. It’s Akkoma (upgraded/migrated from Pleroma). I just thought that by actually specifying that, I was going to get XY Problem’d by people (how to fix it etc.).
