_spiffy, in I need to use my google play rewards - what great, paid apps do you use?
@_spiffy@lemmy.ca avatar

I have a kobo ereader and if you install the kobo app on an android phone you can use your google wallet to purchase books. So I spend mine on books.

Riyria, in Is there a Google Maps alternative that is open source and has traffic data?

Wish I could recommend Waze, but it’s owned by Google :(

mortalic,

I know, kills me. I used to use that all the time.

brb, in Are there any Android web browsers that will open a folder of bookmarks simultaneously?

Firefox can do this. Just go to the folder, tap three dots and “Open all in new tabs”.

PaulLFC,
@PaulLFC@lemmy.world avatar

Oh wow, so it can! Either that’s a recent feature, or I’m not very observant (probably the latter), as I hadn’t seen that option before. Thanks!

mp3, in Android News App that isnt hot garbage?
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

What about using an RSS reader and retrieve the news from multiple sources of your choosing?

Hazdaz,

Which one?

IronRain,

I use Pluma and Feeder. The latter is open source and on F-Droid. The former performs a little smoother for me though, and I tend to prefer it’s UI.

Hazdaz,

I’m willing to check it out. If yiu think of any other suggestions, post away.

Thanks

Personally I use Inoreader and it works well for my needs, although I pay for the Supporter subscription to be ad-free for roughly $20/year.

I've been using FEEDLY for years. Love it.

MeatsOfRage, in Typing speed with Thumb-key keyboard

I’ll give it a shot

$26.99

I’ll let someone else give it a shot

henrikx, (edited )

You can get it for free from GitHub (check releases). Use Obtainium to get updates.

Edit: it’s also on F-Droid

Poggers, in I need to use my google play rewards - what great, paid apps do you use?

I like Diarium, journaling once a day has helped me feel like I’m not “wasting” my days doing nothing. I started out with just 2 or 3 sentences at first, and now I’m writing down frustrating bits, cool interactions, or sometimes still just a laundry list of what I did. It helps me feel like I’m not just floating through life.

I also like using my credit to offset the cost of the season pass in Marvel Snap once a month, but that’s more for just whatever phone game you feel deserves a few bucks now and then (if any).

  • Photo Editor is nice when you want to do some relatively advanced image editing on the go.
  • PSPlay is a great alternative to PS Remote Play that supports a wide array of game controllers, not just the PS4/PS5 controller.
  • Cryptomator for encrypting and accessing encrypted files on the go. It goes on sale once in a while, so I’d wait if it’s full price at the moment.
  • NFC Tools Pro if you like tinkering with NFC tags.

I used some for YouTube Premium. It’s a nice little break from all of the adds.

Madbrad200, in 🚀 Introducing Luna Open Beta: Elevate Your Lemmy Experience!
@Madbrad200@lemmy.world avatar

An app description written by ChatGPT seems lazy, not gonna lie. It’s full of unnecessary flowery language and buzzwords.

I’ll keep watch though.

kratoz29,

It says edited, not written.

Maybe OP only used it to correct grammar and stuff.

lunaforlemmy,

And tone, but yes, I wrote the original statement, ran it through a few times, prompted it write things it left out, then edited the final result

Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt

kratoz29,

No problem, it’s a very reasonable use of these tools to be honest.

lunaforlemmy,

Honestly, I wrote it out, it felt awkward and more like a changelog than anything, I ran it through chat gpt and it stripped out enough details that it flowed better. I deleted everything it said that wasn’t what I wanted to say, and we got something that someone read long enough to see the disclaimer

Also, it’s over the top and flowery as hell even after tweaking it, but I didn’t write it - I got to skip several hours of self consciously agonizing over it before clicking submit and stressing out some more.

Chat-gpt isn’t any more lazy than using a power saw. I couldn’t have done better by hand, every statement it made was fed to it by me, and I edited down the output in multiple stages so I can stand by the accuracy of the result

overlordror, in 🚀 Introducing Luna Open Beta: Elevate Your Lemmy Experience!

This app and its icon are dead ass ugly. You guys cannot be serious.

OZFive,

Dude, come on. It’s a first release. You rush to be the first post to tell them it’s ugly? Give them time and see what happens.

lunaforlemmy,

The icon is a placeholder made from the recolored fediverse icon I threw together in 20 mins. I know what the actual one will be, but it’ll take 6-12+ hours to put together

The visuals will take at least 5-7 days of tweaking unless I find examples of something similar to reference

Instead, I fixed bugs, and posted a beta to get feedback on what I should prioritize.

In that time, I could get a ~15x performance increase, add a dozen random requested features, add kbin and maybe mastodon support, or get halfway through building custom feeds by stitching multiple sorts across accounts and servers.

I build adaptable code, and so I built a foundation. I’m a photographer, not an artist - making things pretty is pure trial and error for me, because I can’t picture the end result. I haven’t started to try to make it pretty or optimized, I just made it extremely capable and clean enough that I could use it

Can you give specifics of what you find grating instead of just telling me it’s ugly?

MeatsOfRage, in Typing speed with Thumb-key keyboard

I grabbed it from FDroid to give it a try. I really don’t believe there could be any way to use this where the speed could even come close to a swipe based keyboard. Every character requires a full up down motion with your thumb and often an additional gesture to reach a sub letter and the subsequent space between words. With swipe style I can bang out entire words with their space in a single motion with about 85% accuracy. Thumb keys layout doesn’t map to existing keyboard layouts rather it prioritizes common letters with less common letters on gestures which failed me a couple of times because my direction was a little too up vs up right. Swipe typing has a huge leeway for errors including skipping letters while offering suggestions because it can see the entire word you attempted.

They could possibly add swipe functionality to this to improve the speed but given the center space contains 9 characters I’m not sure that would be possible to infer that much.

Maybe someone could really spend the time rewiring their brain to use this but I don’t think in it’s current state it can compete in WPM with a swipe style keyboard so it really comes down to how important the privacy features are to you.

netchami, in Bromite is dead, long live Cromite.

Just use Mull. Don’t support Google’s monopoly on browser rendering engines by using Chromium based browsers.

bolanrox,

Plus you can upgrade it via Firefox updater

netchami,

Yes, FFUpdater is an awesome tool.

bolanrox,

I tried it cromite just to see and honestly it lagged on me when trying to open the menus etc. Mull /fennec were noticeably snappier. S23 standard here fwiw

Unforeseen, in Is there a Google Maps alternative that is open source and has traffic data?

You could buy an actual GPS from Garmin or something instead. I’m not aware of anything open that has traffic data.

mortalic,

I’d prefer to use the screen already in my car though

In an effort to spend some of my balance a while back, I bought Recipe Keeper. It was $10, I think.

I can’t say I use it daily, but it is fantastic if you do any cooking or collecting of recipes. It’s easy to share a URL to it, it will strip out the pointless blog post and just give you a well formatted recipe; it has a nice scan feature that makes importing printed recipes easy; and there’s even the option to export your own cookbook.

I love it and can’t recommend it enough.

Lazylazycat,

This looks amazing, thank you!

If you’re into mobile games I’d recommend any of the papa’s games. I have cluckeria to go and it’s helped kill time when i don’t have WiFi or a long time to get into something more involved.
