zephyrvs, to europe in Kremlin Says 'Theoretically Possible' to Not Hold Presidential Elections in 2024 as "it's already obvious that Putin will be elected"

What a stupid move by the Russian state. If they’re so convinced that Putin will remain in power, they’d hold elections. Navalny is in jail and the opposition will probably try to mount an attack, but unless their domestic security services know something they’re not telling, it’s quite baffling why they’d openly admit to such weakness.

I mean, they’ve embedded Zelensky’s move to postpone elections in their own propanda.

Imperialism breeds stupidity.

PRUSSIA_x86,

They have more room to work legally, since he was an American

FluffyPotato,

I guess the US has more luck running a case where they have access to one side at least but it’s not like this does anything as the US has no power to charge Russian citizens not in the US. Like this would sound more meaningful if the US worked with international institutions for this like the International Criminal Court in Hague for example.

galloog1,

The US does not recognize their authority due to judgements against US citizens concerning war crimes that the US is not signatory to. It’s an important legal distinction.

Tosti,
@Tosti@feddit.nl avatar

Well the person does not have to be in the US merely in a country that has an extradition treaty, is willing to extradite for a price in the game of geopolitics, or the US thinks it can perform a rendition.

In any way it is also a signal to the world. Do t forget about Ukraine and the Russians are doing terrible things there.

It probably also helps pressure the GOP to put forward a vote for aid to Ukraine. If they don’t they don’t care about Russians torturing Americans. And that’s not an easy thing to spin for the GOP spindoctors.

0x815, (edited )

@mriormro

I changed the title because I assume that many people don’t know who Ms. Simonyan is, and possibly don’t know even what ‘RT’ is if they read this out of context. ‘The Moscow Times’ can do that as their readers might be familiar with these names and terms assuming they have some knowledge of Russia and, above all, they are visiting a Russia-focused medium.

When reading a community called ‘Europe’ on a general interest platform like Lemmy, however, I can reasonably assume that many people wouldn’t understand the original title. This is why I changed it.

That aside, you may think before you type, and ask questions. If you then still see a reason for your tonality, then feel free to go ahead with this style and I’ll like the block feature.

deadcream,

I think OP was upset about you using the word "slammed", not about dropping Simonyan name.

0x815,

Mayve I misunderstood (if so, I apologize). What I want to do is to add clarity if I think it’s necessary, but I don’t change the original author’s wording or something.
