When they remove old.reddit it’s over for me - there is no browser I’ve tried that new.reddit hasn’t managed to crash within a few minutes of using it.
But I’ll stay on old.reddit for as long as possible… there are just too many nazis and fascists waiting in the wings to hijack the communities I’ve put a lot effort into. It’s better to just milk them for as long as possible.
I created an account on Lemmy.world earlier this summer but it remained dormant for the most part because I tend to participate in these kinds of forums from my phone. It’s similar to a preference to watching movies and television shows on a television. I wasn’t streaming until apps and services became available to stream and watch directly on my TV. I just wasn’t going to watch on my phone or computer except once in a blue moon.
After experimenting with several apps, Boost for Reddit was what I preferred and used for a long while back there. As soon as Boost became available for Lemmy, the ease of participating here for me was as smooth as silk. For others that Boost was a fave with, it’s probably the same.
It’s great that activity is on the rise on alternatives such as Lemmy.
I can confirm it’s the same for me. I was actually trying to avoid lemmy for a while and would only hope on for 5 minutes or so a day, but now that boost is here it feels really natural to want to participate, and even just scroll top for a while
The only “downside” from running your own instance is the all page is generated from all the communities that someone in your instance has visited. So with a smaller instance the all page is less diverse.
Lol. I came from reddit after 10 years. It was nice to see the lemmy connect app get an update soon after the influx. I’m still trying to get a handle on navigation but I’m hoping to become more active here.
I tried to migrate to another instance by rejoining the same communities as this account. However I can’t seem to find some of the communities anymore through the other instance’s search page. There’s no indication that there’s any defederation going on.
I still have no idea what a proper community joining process is. I just go to the search page, type it in and scroll through the random comments until I find a link to a community.
If only I could just copy the community link, right now it’ll just open up with lemmy.world again, so I have to go through the other instance’s search page. Please let me know if there’s a guide of any kind.
Edit: Ok you need to manually type the URLs. E.g. if you wanted to open this community on lemmy.ml, type “lemmy.ml/c/[email protected]”
That’s a kinda clunky experience ngl. How is the average normie going to feel about appending URLs in the address bar tho.
I just put the url in the search box on the Lemmy webui sand search. I find a lot of the time it says nothing found but if I click search a second tinder it finds it so it must be a bug. Then click the community and subscribe.
There are instances that just mirror content from other sites which leads to a ton of posts with zero discussion. They have been defederated by the larger instances because it spammed the all-feed.
