Ye, this is one thing I did for the folks, so there is always new stuff even when I’m not managing it. They have like 20 shows they are slowly recording.

I got the HDHomeRun Extend, 2 tuners in one unit. Slap an antenna on the wall and boom, extra functionality.

@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

I think you need a plex pass but am unsure, as I already paid the ‘lifetime’ sub before I added a tuner. I think so since the guides aren’t free (for plex) but it’s been a few years since I researched it all.

Tbh JF is faaaaaaaar from a ‘great UI’, it suffers from the ‘open source design’ of developers who have no idea how to design a good UI as the designers for the UI. I shouldn’t need to click vaguely in the direction of where I think the X (close) button is to make it appear in the first place. The settings for a user should be in the same location as the admin settings. The main screen shouldn’t look like it came straight out of 2000, it should have the categories all visible by default, it should be easier to setup https (plex was WAY easier in this regard), ota channel guides shouldn’t be outsourced to a paid project, there is no built-in import/export (I recently moved to a docker image and found that out, yay)…

It ‘works’, but fuck me it’s so rough around the edges that it draws blood. Plex has issues (downloading content from a server is wonky, metadata can grab the wrong movies, paid sub/lifetime etc) but it’s so, so, so much closer to what an all-in-one media platform should be, imo.

wreckedcarzz,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

Facts. I run both but JF is not ‘family-ready’ and thus sits on my server, receiving updates and idling until that changes. Plex took 5 minutes of explaining and the folks have been happily using it for a few years now.

wreckedcarzz,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve had plex running on my nas for 6+ years now, and have it set to where all the cloud stuff is available but out of the way, as I have a small collection so I don’t need to lean into the cloud streaming. I remember trying Emby in my evaluation of Plex, but as I recall the UI was bleh and it too followed a paid model. I know of Kodi but I haven’t looked into it in a long time, and I never ended up actually trying it.

Plex is fine for my needs, but I decided to get setup with JF just ‘in case’ plex takes a sharp new direction or something (I’ve had it installed since the whole ‘watch stuff free with ads’ kicked off), so if/when I can just be like ‘hey all plex did [stupid thing] so I just need you all to uninstall plex, grab this jellyfin app, and login with [credentials] and we will be all set’.

wreckedcarzz,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, there’s a reason I keep it installed and at the ready, but it’s just less user-friendly and that is essential when my users aren’t tech savvy, they just want things to ‘work’. If JF reaches feature parity I’ll migrate my users, but I can’t be asked to explain why they need to pay a monthly fee for ota guides or why everything looks different, if I also need to explain that features are missing and why can’t I move their watch history. It’s got to be easy for them, but also for me too.

you run the program on a computer somewhere

“the cloud is just someone else’s computer”

(even if the computer is yours, whereas you have created your own ‘mini cloud’. I hate that term, it’s just a machine running software. It’s all just machines, consuming us all. screams … anyway)

I just set this up myself a few days ago, though because it doesn’t sync for non-EU banks, I haven’t gone further yet.

No. All bridges are gifted by the Bridge God. Attempts to create and then market a bridge results in mysterious death, 103% of the time.

The real problem with any other video service is that YT has a HUGE advantage of WAY more content.

    “the car [corolla] for people who view cars as a boring appliance” -anyone who views any excitement in driving

    @wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

    A ton of the population seems to think that if your on the smaller side of the scale, a macho truck will compensate for that. If microscopic, then mod it to roll coal.

    There’s a fraction that actually use their trucks for truck things, but the vaaaaaaast majority are mall crawlers that will run to the car wash at the mere sight of a puddle of water.

    Ehh, the rav4 isn’t bad, the Tacoma has proper 4wd cred without screaming ‘my pp smol’, and the Y will steamroller all the others in a 1/4 mile, while blindfolded.

    If they had a r4 with proper 4wd options and an EV-only drivetrain, it’d be a great car for a lot of uses, and fun on and off road. The corolla is just so… bland, I guess? Unimaginative, boring, utilitarian. The soviet bloc of ‘western’ vehicles, if you will. It could be fun, but nobody thinks of that term when they here ‘corolla’. Well, almost nobody.

    (that’s a great movie btw, if you go in with the expectation that it’s awful, it’s a pretty good comedy/parody)

    What about a tier system, something like “excellent / great / good / fair / neutral / cautious / warning / negative”? Hide the actual number from the user, so there’s no ‘mine is bigger than yours’ contest.

    Gays screen for this, too.

    “I like to go out to the range now and they, stay in practice and have fun”

    I miss my Leaf. Great car, with no fucking active cooling for the battery. In the desert. It pained me. You could have been perfect, you could have been the chosen one!

    Japan makes some fantastic things. The fact that it was so painfully obvious that they didn’t bother to test it in any other climate was just suicide.

    I was on track to get a pack replacement, as it was at 30k and like 75% SoH. I had a stroke and had to return the car, but just a few days before that I was investigating dealers that did the pack replacement and verifying that it would be no cost to me, a new formula pack (snake-something was the name, don’t remember), and it’d be done locally with minimal wait.

    If Nissan would just have went with active cooling, it’d be a peak vehicle imo. I racked up a touch over 10k miles in 4 months, used '11 SV with all the options ticked (not accessories). Driving 70 miles, hooking up a CHAdEMO (capitalization?), filling it to 100%, another 70 miles, full, and the pack temp would be right up or close to the overheating level. But that thing was a trooper.

    I want to get back on the road, in one of those 1st gens, but with an aftermarket battery that is higher capacity (27kW good lord not again) and with proper cooling. Swap out the L3 for whatever is the new standard, and enjoy that car. It was a gem.

    I mean I’m cheering for Linux adoption too, but I’ve never received an ad beyond the initial install crapware app stubs. I do a sweep on the system settings, clean the junk, and I’m off to the races.

    For the unsuspecting users, the privacy concerns are quite bad though.

    wreckedcarzz,
    @wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

    I havent had that happen, either - between 6 machines I manage and about the same number of reinstalls over the years, from 10 rtm to present 22H2 (or whatever its up to now); I’ve heard the claim by many, but my evidence is nil.

    wreckedcarzz,
    @wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

    Out of curiosity, do you have a screenshot? Unless I have always been the B/control group in A/B testing or something, it sounds super weird.

    wreckedcarzz,
    @wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

    I suppose - I always disable it as part of my initial setup steps, I have actually never used it.

    I’ve only seen shilling for 360 in the account panel, though. Never in the notification tray.

    wreckedcarzz,
    @wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

    That’s not the notification tray, though? I mean bleh but you have to go searching for that, and it is somewhat relevant given that most users are logged into their MS account, and this is the accounts settings page… am I missing something?

    wreckedcarzz,
    @wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

    A whole lot of looking at the mirror but blaming others? How are non-hetero people ‘politicizing children’? Existing?

    Your whole comment is cringe as hell, really.
