I’ve never really used it for movies and it can recommend more than just movies but I’ve used TasteDive before, if you haven’t already tried that one.

Do modern android phones have standard USB ports or can you just use USB storage devices through the charging port with an adapter?

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

Ok, I was confused because OP said USB “sticks”. I knew that Linux phones have standard USB ports so I thought that maybe modern android phones had them too.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

Ok, I know what happened. Because of Wikipedia’s new layout, I saw “two USB 2.0 ports” but missed the part where it stated that those were included on the docking bar.

On a side note, I have seen people take a raspberry PI and use a case with a touch screen and a battery so they can use it as a phone.

I recently found out about PeaZip, it’s a Foss compression tool that can compress and uncompress a wide variety of compression formats. For some formats, like 7z, it also has some pretty advanced options to help maximize compression ratios, if you know what you are doing of course.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

Ok, I’ve edited my comment to reflect that.

vortexal, (edited )
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

Outside of having significantly more formats and methods available (some of which are experimental), the only other thing really notable is that 7zip doesn’t seem to have a “tar before” option, like PeaZip does. I can see that in the manual, that 7zip can tar files before compressing but you have to do that manually.

I should probably mention that my original comment was comparing PeaZIp to WinRAR. I actually didn’t use 7zip until I tested for the purpose of comparing it to PeaZip in this comment.

F-Droid alternative clients and repositories exist, so as far as I’m aware this shouldn’t really be that big of a problem.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

How do other repositories handle this? Do they just use F-Droid to process the apps and then just add the F-Droid version of that app to their repository, or is there another method they use?

vortexal, (edited )
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

So that would mean that, unless I’m wrong, the closest thing to an alternative for F-Droid that currently exists would be Obtainium. Obtainium is the only other android app that I’m aware of that can install/update apps directly from sources like GitHub.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, that’s why I said that Obtainium was “the closest thing to an alternative for F-Droid”. If F-Droid goes down because of the current state of things, it would impact all of the other clients and repos. Meaning that Obtainium, while it does work completely differently and it’s not perfect, would be the closest thing to an alternative for F-Droid until someone else makes a real F-Droid alternative. Once again, I will state that I could be wrong, I don’t have perfect knowledge of the internet and therefor, wouldn’t know if someone has already made a more direct alternative to F-Droid that no one has probably even heard of.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

I switched to Linux for two reasons:

  1. I believe that it’s always a good idea to support alternatives.
  2. I prefer to use products and services that I actually support.

I do still use Windows occasionally because not everything works or at least has an alternative available but Linux is and will probably always be my primary OS. Even if by some miracle Microsoft, Apple or Google actually start listening to their users and make their OS and business models perfect, I would still use an alternative like Linux as my primary because there would be nothing preventing these companies from reverting their decisions.

How does Spotube get it's audio from YouTube/Piped?

I started using Spotube a few days ago and it seems interesting but I’m having a specific issue with it. I’m trying to listen to “Darkish” by A-One but despite the fact that there are multiple videos on YouTube, Spotube can’t find a source and if I try manually searching for a source, all of the videos, including...

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, the pictures below shows what happens when I try to select an alternative source for any version of the song. Every version of the song on YouTube works in my web browser. So unless it’s somehow different when using the API instead of YouTube directly through a browser, that shouldn’t be the problem. Also, I live in the US and I’m not using a VPN. Every other song I’ve listened to so far works perfectly fine for me, it’s just this one for some reason. https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/5b2e836f-6fc6-4d6e-9082-cd09502fca57.pnghttps://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/8e38f58f-3b6a-476b-86c0-520a0838baf2.png

It might be subjective but for me the most disturbing thing was the alarming amount of spider porn/hentai. Like, are there actually people out there who fantasize about being mounted by a spider the size of a car? As someone who has arachnophobia, I really don’t understand it.

What do you all do on your phones that isn't doom-scrolling or mindless mini games?

I find myself checking out pretty often and just making myself feel bad about the state of the world, or killing half an hour on stupid games that I could 100% live without. This is probably pretty common, and I’m wondering what other people have found as a way to do more productive things with their phones in the downtime.

Outside of some of the other things that have already been mentioned, I sometimes use Tachyomi to read manga/comics.

I actually just tried Gnome Boxes and it seems to work mostly fine but the only problem I’m having is that I’m trying to run a Windows XP virtual machine but I can’t figure out how to get files from my host to the guest. Apparently, I need some software to be running on the guest but the website that I need to download the software from doesn’t work in internet explorer and I obviously can’t just download it on the host and transfer it to the guest.

I’m not sure what you mean but it doesn’t matter because VirtualBox still isn’t working and I’ve decided to uninstall it and try some alternatives that people have mentioned.

So I tried virt-manager but it’s giving me an error message about not being able to connect to "libvirt qemu:///system" and it wont let me install a virtual machine. I’m assuming that I’m supposed to download “libvirtd”, but I can’t figure out how to install it. I think it wants me to build it from the source but there doesn’t seem to be a guide on how to do that.

I tried both virt-manager and Gnome Boxes but I’m having issues with both of them.

Gnome Boxes works mostly fine but I can’t seem to get files from the host to the guest. It says that the guest is supposed to have some special software but I’m trying to use Windows XP and I can’t seem to figure out how to get the required software because the website doesn’t work in internet explorer and I obviously can’t just download it from the host and transfer it over.

I installed it through apt with just sudo apt install virtualbox-7.0. I also downloaded the deb file from their website but, at least when installed through apt, it just ignores it and uses the version from Mint’s repository anyways.

Edit: Because I just checked and you can’t install it directly like that anymore, I first tried installing VirtualBox a few months ago, with an older version of Linux Mint. When I tried installing it several hours ago, it was with the deb file but for some reason apt still selects a different version when it actually installs it.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

It stated that they were already installed so I went through the process of re-installing them and rebooting the computer, which seems to have fixed the problem. I wont really be able to test it much right now because of how late it is for me but I was able to at least start the installation for Windows XP.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

While I have already found a solution (and with it found out that the software doesn’t even work in windows xp) the only way to download Boxes that I could find was through flathub, which doesn’t allow usb devices for some reason. What does work is that I can just put all of the files I want transferred into an iso file and mount it to the VM.

Also, if there is a way to install Boxes outside of flathub, I’ll have to check it out tomorrow because of late it is for me right now.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

How much of my comment did you read before replying?

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

I literally stated in my comment that you can’t install it like that anymore. The reason why is because you get an error saying “E: Package ‘virtualbox-7.0’ has no installation candidate”. This means that in Linux Mint, you have to install it via the deb file.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

I kind of wanted to be using the newest version but I’ll try the old version to see if it works.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

No, in addition to having a broken UI, it’s still giving me the same error message. https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/b610ef5a-b960-4115-9dc1-1819d2172658.png

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

I already tried that yesterday and it didn’t work. It’s not that big of a problem though because both Gnome Boxes and virt-manager are working fine. So I wont need VirtualBox anymore.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

Ok so I’ve already determined a solution for Boxes but I should mention that none what you said works for me. I’m not sure if I have a different version of Boxes than you (even though the only version that seems to exist is the one on flathub) but there is no sharing panel in settings. The only three options in settings is keyboard shortcuts, help and about boxes. When I’m running a VM, the option for “send file” is grayed out and can’t be selected.

For “devices & shares” that is, at least for me, located in the preferences for each VM. I can’t use USB devices because it’s not supported in the flatpak version and if I try to use the shared folders option, the folder I specified doesn’t show up in the VM. From what I can tell this might be an issue specific to some guests, like Windows XP, because Boxes links to a specific program that the guest needs to be running but when I try to run it in Windows XP, I get an error message stating that Windows XP isn’t a supported guest.

The only solution that seems to work for me, is taking the files I want to use in the VM and compress them into an iso file (if they’re not already) and mount it to the VM. It might be tedious but it’s the only thing that seems to be working for me.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

I have two that I use to transfer files from one computer to another. I did think about using one of them for actually listening to music again but the device keeps crashing, the battery doesn’t last very long anymore and I lost the software required to convert videos and I think it’s too old and obscure to find it again.

vortexal,
@vortexal@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes but all of the files I move are either already very small or they are compressed (and sometimes split as well) so they can fit. One of the devices has 4GB of Storage and the other one has 8GB of storage but I do also have a thumb drive that can hold 32GB if I ever need to move something big (which has yet to happen). Most of the things I move are just games I download from Itch so it’s very rarely anything over a few GBs, so the 4GB device gets the job done 99% of the time.

When I was using the 8GB device for music, I never really ran into problems with storage space and even if I did, the device has a micro SD card slot that supports up to 128GB micro SD cards. But I have phones that I can use for this purpose now, so not being able to use the mp3s for music isn’t a problem.
