techgearwhips,

Don’t forget the “Video Background Play Fix” add on. That paired with the adblocking makes it where you can watch ad free YouTube while in another app or even with the screen off.

techgearwhips,

Here’s another trick. Go to youtube and then go to your Firefox menu and check “desktop site”. And then you can install it as a PWA on your Homescreen. Don’t worry, when you open it up for the first time from your Homescreen, it will be back in Mobile web format.

This essentially makes it an isolated app from your browser. Not cluttering up your history and tabs.

techgearwhips,

I use Revanced, but keep Firefox Youtube and invidious as backups.

techgearwhips,

You dont need tampermonkey for Ublock Origin and Video Background Play Fix. It’s under add-ons when you go to settings.

techgearwhips,

Use Duck Duck Go email protection. It’s free and works great. And they even enabled replies

techgearwhips, (edited )

This is exactly what I need to do. I have a custom domain attached to Protonmail. I’ve been using duck duck go for aliases with Bitwarden but this solution sounds perfect. I always wondered what that catch all option meant.

techgearwhips, (edited )

I went from Keepass synced via NextCloud (self hosted) for years… to trying out Bitwarden (their servers) and found the experience much better… then I switched to Vaultwarden via Docker going through Cloudflare Tunnel (with zero trust email authentication required) and fail2ban added. I’m content with the last option.

Giving up on selfhosted email / Any sane email setups?

So I’ve been running self-hosted email using Mailu for a couple of months (after migrating out of Google Workspace). Today it turned that although my server seems to be capable of sending and receiving emails, it also seems to be used by spammers. I’ve stumbled upon this accidentally by looking through logs. This seems to...

techgearwhips,

Protonmail. That’s what I use connected to my own domain.

techgearwhips,

Self host SearxNG or find a cheap provider for it and never look back

Calendar and tasks sync between devices

Ever since I started degoogling my life, i missed how to integrate calendar and tasks in all my devices. Because of my work Im stuck using Macos and I have a debloated samsung device with F-droid. However I need a way of syncing calendars and tasks between Macos and my phone, so I can get push notifications on both of my devices...

techgearwhips,

Radical, Baikal, or NextCloud.

Then sync with your phone via Davx5

techgearwhips,

My exact first thought. And why not a billion BIG Red SIGNS saying shit like: “Collapsed Bridge ahead”, “Warning: immediate death ahead”, “What the fuck are doing?! Turn around”, etc.

techgearwhips,

This and “Funny Games” are my most underrated favorites

techgearwhips,

I’m going to have to do some research on this. Down the rabbit hole I go…

techgearwhips,

Wtf. I never ever thought about this until I just read your post… SAME!

techgearwhips,

That the WWF was real

techgearwhips,

Also, that all cats were girls and all dogs were boys.

techgearwhips,

Nah. Dogs always seemed like the more masculine creatures… and cats more feminine. Before I ever even knew what masculine or feminine meant.

I have been dual wielding the Android/iPhone combo for the last 10 years. I use my iPhone for iMessage, Facetime, Apple Pay, and when my Android is dead. And it works wonderfully with my Apple watch and Airpods when I’m working out. I use my Android for everything else. So my Android is my main device and my iPhone is secondary.

techgearwhips,
  1. I use localsend. Can send between my Android, iPhone, and Desktop easily. I also have a “Copy Paste” telegram group. When I send something to the group, it appears on all my devices. I kind of like this because I have a history of all my links, pics, files, etc and I can just do a search if I ever need to go back and find something. Also, Photosunc is like $6 a year and anytime I take a pic it auto backs it up to my desktop server via SMB.
  2. You can use a flash drive now with thunderbolt to usb-c converter I believe.
  3. I don’t use any apple services except for iMessage, Facetime, and Apple Pay (to accept payments). So no iCloud, Apple Music, Apple Care, etc. None of that garbage.
  4. I carry both. I’ve been doing it so long that when I have one and not the other, I feel naked. 2 phones and my Keys, everywhere I go… except the gym. I only bring my iPhone then.
  5. Sure no problem. You may be used to reddit. People are a bit nicer over here :)
techgearwhips,

I just setup my self hosted searxng yesterday… I don’t know how I went without this for so long!

techgearwhips,

That theme is horrible

techgearwhips,

I use cloudflare tunnel for each of my apps. Because it’s just so easy to setup in like 10 secinds. But there’s no need to have a different domain for each app. Subdomains of one main domain is fine.

techgearwhips,

No longer in development. Last updated 2 years ago.

techgearwhips,

Collabora spreadsheets

techgearwhips,

I tried the all in one a few times. I run it from localhost:8080 and the NextCloud setup keeps asking me to put in a domain name. I just want to be able to run from localhost with no domain needed.

techgearwhips,

Honestly don’t need SSL. And I will try that localhost.local when I get back to my server. Thanks.

techgearwhips, (edited )

Localhost definitely won’t work because I will get the error “Domain must contain at least one dot!”.

techgearwhips,

Does not work. This comes up:

“DNS config is not set for this domain or the domain is not a valid domain! (It was found to be set to ‘’)”

techgearwhips,

I’m now using Eternity for Lemmy (same app as infinity for reddit) and it has this feature.

techgearwhips,

techgearwhips,

No ob my Android. I rarely use Lemmy on my iPhone. But when I do, I use Memmy

techgearwhips,

Ford Crown Victoria.

Big and comfy. Bulletproof engines. Easy to work on. Only issue is it’s a gas guzzler. But you’ll be saving that money on cheap insurance and cheap parts. I suggest to get the LX trim and not the police car.

techgearwhips,

Salmon as Samon

techgearwhips,

Exercise as Exersize

techgearwhips,

The L shouldn’t even be there in the first place. Why is it there just talking up unnecessary space?

techgearwhips,

Yea. My whole Facebook feed is full of ads and posts from people I don’t even have on my friend list. I got fed up and barely go on there anymore.

Ideas for self-hosted services

I’ve had a “home lab server” for a while now, it’s nothing special but I think I can do more with it, I just don’t know what to do with it… I currently use it just for a pihole and (sometimes) a Minecraft server or a web server… I used to also have a nexcloud and a searxng instance (which I will probably bring...

techgearwhips,

I swore by Keepass for years… recently switched to Bitwarden last month and so glad I did.

techgearwhips,

NextCloud

techgearwhips,

Yes. 39 y/o male. But 99% of the people I know, don’t know how. So now it’s easy to guess what country I live in.

techgearwhips,

I honestly don’t care. I just self host as a way to not be locked into google specifically. So if I ever do decide to switch to something else outside of Cloudflare or Tailscale, I can. By the way, I tried to set up Wireguard and I felt like I had to have a degree in engineering to get it to work. Then I tried wg-easy and that didn’t work. Went to the github and seen it had like 300 issues. I like stuff that just works and I don’t have to spend hours tinkering with.

techgearwhips,

Oh man I forgot about that one! 😂😭

techgearwhips,

I just went back to NextCloud and made it barebones (Bookmarks, Calendar, Tasks, & Contacts only) Everything still working perfectly lol. Thanks anyways though.
