simple,

I’m also very excited but I wouldn’t get too hyped even if they do make great claims. The Snapdragon 8cx trailer tried hyping it up so much and that thing was really slow and didn’t match their claims of days-long battery life (it was closer to 13 hours IIRC)

simple,

It’s basically an equation to calculate the “sweet spot” of how much you should spend in gambling in order to get the best returns. If you gamble too much, you lose too much when you fail. If you gamble too little, you earn too little to make enough back. I don’t know how this applies to investing but it’s well known in gambling, which is why casinos always have the odds against you so that you’re still more likely to lose or have a minimum bet that’s way higher than the optimal bet.

simple,

Because if you gamble in small increments the odds are in your favor. If you gamble your entire wealth then you’ll likely lose.

Lets say you’re gambling in $5 increments. The odds are 50/50, if you lose then you’ll have $2.5, and if you win you’ll have $9. That’s a 50% chance to lose $2.5 and a 50% chance to gain $4, the actual risk is if you lose too many times in a row that you don’t have enough money to gamble with. Otherwise, you’ll slowly gain money.

simple,

Damn, I called this a while ago. With Intel and AMD focusing on x86 and being behind on the competition, it makes so much sense that Nvidia would break into the processor space.

Also announcing this one day before the Qualcomm event is both funny and evil. Excited to see some good ARM laptops that aren’t Macbooks.

simple,

They tried to buy ARM.

Just for market dominance I assume.

They design the Tegra chip that is in the Switch.

Yes, but that chip is old. It was already a bit outdated when the switch came out, and that was 2017.

simple,

Pretty much any server nowadays logs IPs, so they probably know who you are. It’s unlikely they’re going to do anything about it though.

simple,

The devs have honestly done a great job following up with updates and hotfixes. They say the next patch will address the enemy density which is one of the biggest issues. They’ll reduce enemies overall and will move the current enemy placement to NG+.

simple,

Have you read Vattu? It’s hands down one of my favorite comics ever.

Stand Still, Stay Silent is also pretty good.

Have fun!

Edit: Fixed link, the ampersand is still broken on Lemmy.

simple,

Flatpak is the future, no doubt about that. I don’t know how devs and distro owners put up with the normal way of distributing binaries. The motto is supposed to be “build once, run anywhere” but sometimes it felt like “build 20 times, enter dependency hell, realize your distro’s repo is using a 6 month old version with no signs of updating”. I don’t miss those days. I’m always going for Flatpak now.

simple,

Speaking of, has anyone from lemmy.film explained why it went down? It’s getting frustrating seeing instance admins disappear with no warning.

simple,

Thanks for the offer, but I’m not interested in being a mod. Trying not to spend too much time online. Good luck hosting the community, though!

simple,

I wouldn’t use AWS unless you’re building a full stack of resources and are willing to pay a premium for adaptability.

I also wouldn’t use it if you’re not super experienced in it, I used up all my $50 credit on a DNS server I accidentally left open for a few months but thought I deleted. AWS is a giant footgun for the inexperienced.

The future of selfhosted services is going to be... Android?

Wait, what?

Think about it. At some point everyone has had an old phone lying around. They are designed to be constantly connected, constantly on... and even have a battery and potentially still a SIM card to survive power outages.

We just need to make it easy to create APK packaged servers that can avoid battery-optimization kills and automatically configure an outbound tunnel like ngrok, zerotrust, etc...

The goal: hosting services like , , !? should be as easy as installing an APK and leaving an old phone connected to a spare charger / outlet.

It would be tempting to have an optimized ROM, but if self-hosting is meant to become more commonplace, installing an APK should be all that's needed. can do SSH, VPN and other tunnels without the need for root, so there should be no problem in using tunnels to publicly expose a phone/server in a secure manner.

In regards to the suitability of home-grade broadband, I believe that it should not be a huge problem at least in Europe where home connections are most often unmetered: "At the end of June 2021, 70.2% of EU homes were passed by either FTTP or cable DOCSIS
3.1 networks, i.e. those technologies currently capable of supporting gigabit speeds."

Source: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/broadband-coverage-europe-2021

PS. syncthing actually already has an APK and is easy to use. Although I had to sort out some battery optimization stuff, it's a good example of what should become much more commonplace.

simple,

I’ve already heard of people using Termux to host services on their old phones. Seems to work well.

simple,

Because a ton of people are still influenced by ads, and even if they didn’t exist ads serve to keep the product/company in the public conscious. It keeps people talking about the product or informs people that the new movie/phone/whatever is coming out soon.

Has HP printers always been this bad? (sh.itjust.works)

So my mother recently bought an ET-2800, By HP we had an HP printer before and we got a new one because the old one would not work with my sister’s Windows 11 Laptop. So I had to set it up for my mother, the manual said you can use it without the app. But there was no way to physically do that. Anyway, I downloaded the app on...

simple,

Samsung’s line of laser printers are great. They just work and don’t impose any bizarre restrictions. I’ve had mine for at least 5 years now, but it obviously doesn’t do colored pages if those are important to you.

simple,

Oh. I wasn’t aware… Buy an older model then I guess.

simple,

On the other side of the foldable spectrum, the OnePlus Open is a welcome addition to the mix with the best screen format on a book-style folding phone. It’s thin and light, and the software includes some thoughtful approaches to multi-tasking — a crucial part of the folding phone experience. At $1,700, it’s just $100 shy of the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 5 and misses a couple of key features that both of those other options include: wireless charging and an IPX8 rating.

Does anyone really care about these though? Wireless charging is really niche and worse than wired in every way, and water resistance is one of those things phones love advertising but nobody ever notices.

Yup, Laion’s projects are open source and they give away their models.

What is your opinion about this computer? MINIS FORUM UM480 XT Mini PC AMD Ryzen 7 4800H 8 C/16 T, 16 GB RAM 512 GB SSD PCIe, 2.5 SATA, 2X HDMI e USB C, 2.5 G RJ45 LAN, 6X USB Ports (www.amazon.es)

I think if it breaks I’m not going to be able to have it fixed because of lack of technical service. But if it doesn’t break its great value.

simple,

The specs are good for a general use case, but I wouldn’t buy anything unfixable without warranty.

simple,

Key to being a good mod is to have very clear rules, so when you warn/ban someone you can point to the rule number and not get into an argument about it.

simple,

Misleading title, he said they have a good relationship because they added Banjo Kazooie in Smash and have Minecraft on the Switch. That’s it.

simple,

Could’ve fooled me, I thought it was in development for two weeks

simple,

Mario Wonder apparently runs perfectly on the newest early access build.

simple,

Nintendo of America. It’s unclear what Nintendo Japan think of unions.

simple,

The AC Mirage crossover maps were really solid, looking forward to this one too.

simple,

I’m pretty sure the ToS only exists for legal reasons, don’t make a big deal out of this. It doesn’t mean the admins won’t ban people for discrimination. Nothing suggests their stance has changed.

simple,

Nothing was changed, it’s a new document.

simple,

A) They weren’t removed, this is a new document

B) As other comments mention, discrimination and harassment is covered in section 5

C) Consider messaging the admins about it rather than push the alert button and causing needless drama

simple,

It’s running on electron so… Yeah. Not the lightest program.
