atomicpoet,

There’s already backlash against on .

They’re not happy about it. The oxygen has just been sucked out of the room.

I understand where they’re coming from. They thought AT protocol was going to catapult over . And now Threads has chosen ActivityPub.

How things change in the space of three months.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews bluesky doesn’t care about which protocol wins, and also Facebook using activity pub isn’t widely seen as a win for our community here or our protocol. I’d like to see less superiority posting and more curiousity about what other platforms are getting right.like @ekana said, bluesky has quickly created feed features we really could use over here on mastodon.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I feel like Bluesky waited for too long, and now they're going to be overshadowed. As much as I hate Meta, I think it's better to have an ActivityPub-compatible platform from them, than a platform endorsed by Dorsey and full with crypto-bros.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews
There are hundreds of Tweets today from users (bots) with 0 followers saying they tried Threads, hated it, and have come back.🤔

ekana,
@ekana@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet @fediversenews could it also just be that Threads is an awful app (it is). Also, most Bluesky people don't even care about the protocol lol.

ekana,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews what they do care about tho is algorithmic choice. It's hard to go back to a feed like Threads when you can have the highly custom feeds on Bluesky.

atomicpoet,

@ekana I've legitimately tried to use Bluesky more often, but I just can't find anything worth reading and the algorithms aren't helping me. Mind you, I prefer reverse chron over everything else.

goatsarah,

@atomicpoet @ekana it certainly seems to lack the depth that exists here.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews The admin for universeodon.com, after meeting with Meta, suggested in a reply that InstagramThreads was also looking to connect with AT protocol too. This would be very smart in my opinion, but after seeing all the algorithm nonsense in their app, I wonder if they will get in their own way leaving the spaces to be bridged by the small/indie web here still.

atomicpoet,

I've got a funny little story for you. So, a while back, someone was all like, "Hey, and are totally done for because Bluesky is this massive gorilla with loads of cash!" And you know what? I've been saying for ages that if Bluesky is a gorilla, then (or , as the kids now call it) is a ginormous whale! And guess what? Tonight, my friend, I've been proven right!

Hold on to your hats because Threads has gone from zero to millions of users in less than a day!

@atomicpoet isn’t compliant with EU privacy and data collection afaik. It may be available in the UK, but as far as I can tell, not in the EU. Either way, I hope it never becomes part of this place. Its purpose is to gather information and sell to the highest bidder, nothing more or less. The rest is dressing and marketing.

Yes I read that too Harriet. As you say, not yet available in the EU as it doesn’t comply with legislation there.

But I had read that the plan is for users of Threads and Mastodon to be able to communicate directly… that concerns me… Greatly!@harriettmb @atomicpoet

@atomicpoet Their user-retention will be worse than Mastodon I suspect.

But can't deny that's a flying start for 'em.

About the quick numbers from 0 to 2 million, a "flying start" I read that many services in the first months inflate their numbers. Just a normal thing. But now days, it's unnecessary.

Im assuming many Instagram users who join dont care about being scraped. Sorry if my terminology is not correct, im referring to the permissions, see images
