@ruud@lemmy.world

Admin of a lot of fediverse servers, among which the .world ones:

  • lemmy.world
  • mastodon.world
  • calckey.world

You can find me on these servers as @ruud

I receive a lot of messages, direct and mentions. I can’t reply to them all. If you have an issue, please e-mail at [email protected]

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

No, we did some rate limiting to try and fight off some attacks, but now some are too strict. We’ll tune these so they won’t bother you anymore.

I’m still running Synapse. Could I migrate this to Dendrite or others? Or would I have to just re-install and lose all messages…

The lemmy.world bubble is back

For the past days I’ve noticed that posts/comments I make on my lemmy.world account are not (or rather very slowly, if ever) federated to the source instance of the community and post/comments that are on the source are not (or rather very slowly, if ever) federated to the local copy on lemmy.world....

@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

Do you have some examples we can look into?

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

Ah. The comments are made by Beehaw users, and Beehaw has de federated from us.

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

So the post from .wtf will arrive here but the Beehaw comments won’t

I think I could ban your account without deleting content, but maybe that’s not what you want?

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

I agree that should be added. But I meant for now, permanent ban without deleting content is the closest to that. Other than that, the only option is to delete your account which should delete the posts too. (But even that doesn’t always work…)

Follow people.

And if you would like to boost it, join a relay. But check which relay, make sure it’s content you want. And prepare for increased server load and media storage!

Fediverse equivalent use of TikTok/Instagram/Twitter for short video sharing..need tips on use/platforms/formats

I’ve been loving Lemmy and mastodon and feel they are coming along as good replacements for Reddit and Twitter. Outside the fediverse, I occasionally enjoy posting dumb little video shorts and I put them on TikTok, Facebook and Insta because I have friends, family and followers on each. (TikTok, Gen-Z, my daughter…Facebook,...

I’ve deleted over 4000 communities today 😁

Very cool!! Did someone create a Spotify playlist for this??

How does domain names work?

Who determines who owns a domain name? International organization? Do unrecognized countries also get their own top-level domain? If someone or some organization wanted to register a website for highly illegal activities (terrorism, crime organizations, etc) who has the authority to shut them down? Does one government has the...

I think I should own .world

Backup / restore gets complicated if you have multiple apps in 1 dB

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, terminology… I mean single instance. And although you can create pg_dumps of separate databases, a true (online) backup of separate databases is difficult. Tools like pgbackrest or barman don’t support it. (I mainly focus on Postgres)

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for the tip, I changed it.

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

The user was banned immediately. Also rate limiting has been put in place on community creation. (Removing the communities takes some time however…)

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

I was a bit confused by the typo in your post title :-) But yeah this would be cool!

About Instagram's "Threads" and people's concerns about privacy

I know that many people are concerned about “Threads” privacy policy and are all screaming “WE WILL BLOCK THREADS”. I honestly can’t see how it’s going to gather any personal information since Lemmy, mastodon etc. doesn’t collect any information at all. Like, how can you gather information about user, if he...

Cool! I feel a forgejo.world coming!

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar
  • Powerful: Organizations & team permissions, CI integration, Code Search, LDAP, OAuth and much more. If you have advanced needs, Forgejo has you covered.

Selfhosters wanna host. But many people don’t. (Ergo: lemmy.world, mastodon.world (GitHub anyone?) so maybe people would like forgejo.world And if not, I’ll use it myself! :-)

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah it’s one of the domains I would love to have but GoDaddy has registered a bunch of them, trying to resell for big $$ which I refuse to do.

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

I do now!

I got an example from someone and did a lot of copy/paste. I can read it, and then guess/google if I need something.

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

I have a lot but I use none. I mainly use the web version, also on mobile.

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not Facebook that will federate. It’s their new to be released platform. So nothing will go on Facebook.

And like any other server you can just block theirs in your account so they don’t see you and you don’t see them.

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

I was trying soma ratelimit settings but set them too low apparently :-) It was reverted after a few minutes.

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

I run 11 fedi servers in total.

ruud,
@ruud@lemmy.world avatar

I think I need to update, the new version will be released July 19th…

ruud,

Don’t forget @stux , he’s also hosting quite some servers!
