Now in the midst of the fun part of grant writing: blue sky discussions with a small core team and a deadline far, far away still.

We could do anything! Not yet locked into ideas and budgets, just dreaming away...

@NicoleCRust @academicchatter Now that would be a writing exercise:
"Transition to sustainable livestock systems is super important but people are stupidheads so we can't figure out how to do it. Money PLZ."

Me seeing a cool looking symposium:
"Hey, let me look if I can go to that... let's see, October 28..."

Me realizing it is November: "WHAAA???? How did that happen???"

The start of the academic year strikes again... where did September and October go???

Yikes; at my uni we have "meeting-free weeks" a few times year, in an effort to let people have more time to spend on research and teaching rather than in meetings. In previous years I did pretty well blocking off that time.

This time, my meeting-free week is one big meeting.

Waiting for the rain of meetings to stop here.... time to put up an umbrella and block of time in my calendar.

I always do enjoy acting as a PhD examiner for a defense; conversing with a young scientist on a topic that they know the most about in the world at that particular moment, and hearing how they look toward the future.

Many congratulations to Dr. Lucille Dumontier who successfully and impressively defended her thesis today at NMBU, Norway.

To all of you defending: well done on completing in the midst of the wild ride it has been since 2020...

"In the twenty-first century, we should no longer tolerate the idea that behaviours considered normal for men are problematic in women. Whether it is unconscious or deliberate, advice about how we should behave is rooted in the estimation that we don’t, as female leaders, have the capacity to determine how to act for ourselves."

Well said. This is exactly the tone of righteous indignation needed here.

Love it when problems solve themselves.

I was trying to figure out how to teleport in order to fit in a meeting with many busy people, that could only be at that one specific time which is inconvenient but not impossible for me so I said "yes".... and now the meeting has been moved to a time much easier for me.

I'm finding a negative correlation with the number of full professors present and the likelihood that a meeting will actually take place without being moved at least once.

This negative correlation is exacerbated wildly if a dean is to be present.

(disclaimer: I do realize everyone is doing what they can. This is about too many meetings at all levels of academia.)

I am totally stealing this and going to start asking "Does this topic really need magic?" in response to meeting requests.

Pausing for reflection with de delivery of this deck of cards on safety and academia from the Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNVH). Do I recognize signs others are becoming uncomfortable in a conversation, and do I pay enough attention to those signals?

Excellent questions, and a very useful tool for both professional leadership and teaching.

What do we mean by Community Engaged Learning (CEL) at Utrecht University? How do we define CEL? Yesterday the CEL team held a retreat in our always-stunning buildings in the centre of Utrecht- photo is of the stained glass ceiling in the library. Highly inspirational once again to hear examples of CEL from across the UU, and discuss viewpoints for practical implementation.

Are courses with "Community Engaged Learning-like components" a good place to start, or do they water down educational outcomes too much? How to ensure that CEL efforts by educators are recognized and rewarded, and educators using CEL supported?

So many questions, such a bouquet of answers. How does your institute do this?

@academicchatter To be clear, I'm not blaming either way here. I have my own views on the acceptability of using ChatGPT (nope, not doing it for all kinds of reasons). But the important take-away here is that all authors need to be on the same page.

renordquist,
@renordquist@akademienl.social avatar

@nsaphra @academicchatter Interesting, thanks for pointing to that (I assume you mean Association for Computational Linguistics, so this: https://2023.aclweb.org/blog/ACL-2023-policy/ right?)

renordquist,
@renordquist@akademienl.social avatar

@nsaphra @academicchatter I am intrigued, but remain skeptical for use in academic publishing. Among (many) other worries primarily related to bias and the way the algorithms are trained, there is the potential for (unintentional) plagiarism: the AI brings up something that appeared in print elsewhere, which you don't realize and keep.

There will be different viewpoints on this, so this is important to discuss with co-authors from the start.

So... one of the biggest meetings in my field, the is taking place this week in .... I've just seen that site-formerly-known-as-bird is abuzz with activity. I miss that a lot- anyone here going to be there?

I couldn't join live, but would love to live vicariously!
Boosts much appreciated to see if there are attendees on Mastodon

@Namnezia @academicchatter @danai @SemAntiKast
I see both sides here. The "everybody is perfect and accomplishing amazing things" compounds frustration for most people, since people don't generally post "MY FIFTH GRANT WAS TURNED DOWN AND I'M ON SOFT MONEY, WHOO HOO!"

But, in moderation, I do really like hearing about papers that are published and career milestones of colleagues that I may not keep in touch with as much- that often gives me a reason to get in toch, to congratulate.

renordquist,
@renordquist@akademienl.social avatar

@Namnezia @academicchatter @danai @SemAntiKast I think it sort of resembles the Christmas Card phenomenon. I know full well that people's lives are imperfect, despite the sugar-coated Christmas/Holiday letters. But I do genuinely enjoy seeing photos of my childhood friend's kids (and how much they look like her at that age).

renordquist,
@renordquist@akademienl.social avatar

@vicgrinberg @Namnezia @academicchatter @danai @SemAntiKast There were a few exceptions that posted about things going not-so-well or day-to-day frustrations. Those tended to be the high-posting accounts, where you'd get more of a feel for the whole person. But there was a lot of sharing of successes; I particularly liked the threads that people would write as explainers of their just-published manuscripts.

renordquist,
@renordquist@akademienl.social avatar

@SemAntiKast @Namnezia @academicchatter @danai I did particularly like the thread "explainers" that people made of their just-published manuscripts, which were focussed on content.

But I get the frustration. I am hopeful that slowly, slowly, things may change. I am, I think, in a priveliged position to work in the Netherlands right now, where facilitating different kinds of academic careers is a central theme, discussed here: https://recognitionrewards.nl/

Slowly, slowly, winds of change.
