I see both sides here. The "everybody is perfect and accomplishing amazing things" compounds frustration for most people, since people don't generally post "MY FIFTH GRANT WAS TURNED DOWN AND I'M ON SOFT MONEY, WHOO HOO!"
But, in moderation, I do really like hearing about papers that are published and career milestones of colleagues that I may not keep in touch with as much- that often gives me a reason to get in toch, to congratulate.
