@NicoleCRust@academicchatter Now that would be a writing exercise:
"Transition to sustainable livestock systems is super important but people are stupidheads so we can't figure out how to do it. Money PLZ."
Yikes; at my uni we have "meeting-free weeks" a few times year, in an effort to let people have more time to spend on research and teaching rather than in meetings. In previous years I did pretty well blocking off that time.
This time, my meeting-free week is one big meeting.
Waiting for the rain of meetings to stop here.... time to put up an umbrella and block of time in my calendar.
I always do enjoy acting as a PhD examiner for a defense; conversing with a young scientist on a topic that they know the most about in the world at that particular moment, and hearing how they look toward the future.
Many congratulations to Dr. Lucille Dumontier who successfully and impressively defended her thesis today at NMBU, Norway.
To all of you defending: well done on completing in the midst of the wild ride it has been since 2020...
congrats, Dr. Dumontier! I hope you’ll join us on Mastodon at some point, so we can hear some more about it! (as a long time chicken breeder, I’m interested in all things poultry 😉)
"In the twenty-first century, we should no longer tolerate the idea that behaviours considered normal for men are problematic in women. Whether it is unconscious or deliberate, advice about how we should behave is rooted in the estimation that we don’t, as female leaders, have the capacity to determine how to act for ourselves."
Well said. This is exactly the tone of righteous indignation needed here.
I was trying to figure out how to teleport in order to fit in a meeting with many busy people, that could only be at that one specific time which is inconvenient but not impossible for me so I said "yes".... and now the meeting has been moved to a time much easier for me.
@renordquist@academicchatter Yes. Too many meetings… also too many people present to get anything done…also committees that kick the ball down the road.
Pausing for reflection with de delivery of this deck of cards on safety and academia from the Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNVH). Do I recognize signs others are becoming uncomfortable in a conversation, and do I pay enough attention to those signals?
Excellent questions, and a very useful tool for both professional leadership and teaching.
What do we mean by Community Engaged Learning (CEL) at Utrecht University? How do we define CEL? Yesterday the CEL team held a retreat in our always-stunning buildings in the centre of Utrecht- photo is of the stained glass ceiling in the library. Highly inspirational once again to hear examples of CEL from across the UU, and discuss viewpoints for practical implementation.
Are courses with "Community Engaged Learning-like components" a good place to start, or do they water down educational outcomes too much? How to ensure that CEL efforts by educators are recognized and rewarded, and educators using CEL supported?
So many questions, such a bouquet of answers. How does your institute do this?
@renordquist@academicchatter We call it Community Service Learning at VU. You can google it. It is a programme for volunteers, but we have enough participants each year. It is always multidisciplinary.
So... one of the biggest meetings in my field, the #ISAE is taking place this week in #Tallinn .... I've just seen that site-formerly-known-as-bird is abuzz with activity. I miss that a lot- anyone here going to be there?
I couldn't join live, but would love to live vicariously!
Boosts much appreciated to see if there are attendees on Mastodon
