Looks fun but unfortunately I can’t install it on my updated Pixel 7 Pro with the latest Android 14, Dec 5th update. Any ideas?

player2,

I think they were saying the opposite. The gun obsessed military types you see in public may be bigots. SG characters may look similar bat are various races and not bigots.

The stick she tells you not to worry about.

You pay extra for the exposed brick look in hip downtown loft apartments!

Are there any active news communities similar to Lemmy/Reddit, but users can only vote and comment, not post articles?

Like, the site owners/employees/admins/mods are the only ones who choose what to post(and hopefully not extremely bias and a good spread of topics), but the users can still upvote/downvote the post as well as comment and all that?...

player2,

Check out Hacker News. Their mission is to only allow thought provoking posts and to not allow enshitification or dumbing down of their platform.

Users can still post content but it is more highly moderated to maintain quality. The users tend to be techy so user submissions are higher quality than average reddit/lemmy posts.

There is a lemmy community that reposts articles from hacker news but now I just browse it on their website or using the Android app Harmonic which I recommend.

player2,

Yeah, some of them are way too technical for me as well. Only some of the articles end up getting reposted to lemmy though, when I browse directly on hacker news, I tend to find a good mix of articles that are less technical but still interesting.

This meme format is used to express disapproval of the action being described, such as destroying mental health. The image in the comment being downvoted comes across as transphobic, despite the disclaimer at the bottom.

Put two spaces after the text to force a line break. I usually put two spaces on the empty line below as well in order to create more of a space.

player2,

You can ask ChatGPT to role play as a foreign language speaking person speaking to you as a beginner language learner. I tried chatting with it in Mandarin and it did pretty well!

The downside is that it’s text instead of audio. There are several other companies working on different versions of this idea for other markets.

player2,

This post made me realize that lemmy is big enough to warrant a best-of community for good comments like this! Is there one like that already?

Still thinking about that stick tho

player2,

Thanks, I only noticed the link to the original post.

player2,

Is there something like this on macos?

player2, (edited )

I tried active corners but I had to disable them because I was constantly triggering it by accident. Programs always put tools or scroll bars near the corners of the screen, and since I used dual monitors, the corners between the screens caused issues.

I found this online, I will try it later:

Shift-Command-D: Open the desktop folder.

Edit: it doesn’t do anything on my MacBook

player2,

Thanks for the help, I’m new to macOS, using it for work now. F11 is a volume key on macbook which I use frequently but fn+F11 does minimize to desktop, so that’s good to know although not ergonomic.

I usually end up using the track pad gestures too, and they work well in laptop mode but since my MacBook is usually docked on my desk and I’m using a BT keyboard/mouse it’s annoying having to take my hands off the keyboard and look up every time.

I’m frustrated that I can’t even alt-tab since it won’t select any program that is minimized or has more than 1 window open so I have to use mission control every time and hunt for the right window. I’ll give Stage Manager a try in the new update.

It is estimated that 30-40% of damage to deep sea internet cables is done by ship anchors being dropped on or dragged across cables. This has resulted in new recommendations for the burial depth of such cables. There are many recorded examples of this happening by accident.

how to receive alert when comments removed?

Censorship is absolutely rampant on Lemmy. I don’t post particularly controversial stuff, but I am an active commenter and I’ve noticed that mods will just wipe my comments or those of others on a whim. I think this is a huge issue and one of the biggest downsides about switching from reddit. I very rarely had comments...

player2,

I believe some subreddits had auto-mod set to notify you about issues with your posts or comments including deletion / ban.

America's nonreligious are a growing, diverse phenomenon. They really don't like organized religion (apnews.com)

Mike Dulak grew up Catholic in Southern California, but by his teen years, he began skipping Mass and driving straight to the shore to play guitar, watch the waves and enjoy the beauty of the morning. “And it felt more spiritual than any time I set foot in a church,” he recalled....

player2,

I hope that as more of the world gets access to the Internet and information that more and more people will leave religions. When I was able to freely read the history of different religions and critical analysis by atheists it made my mind up fairly quickly.

player2,

Wow, that’s horrible. It is so wrong that the authorities were able to keep her detained just because they don’t agree with the judge’s multiple rulings… for 6 years?!

Just to clarify, this is the last annular solar eclipse until 2039 but there will be a total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 which I won’t want to miss.

It’s not brainwashing when the voting system is specifically set up to give an advantage to the dominant parties and to suppress every minority party. There are valid reasons to be skeptical that a 3rd party could ever win without a reformed voting system.

player2,

Yup, I considered the pixel watch for my android phone but Garmin has an advantage over it in every category while having no subscription. I would have considered an apple watch if it were compatible with android.

I think the pixel watch is doomed to fail unless they can separate from the Fitbit model and continue to improve the hardware and software.

player2,

I agree, after owning Garmin watches I wouldn’t want an apple watch.

player2,

I’d say exercise and/or shower when you feel bad about yourself.

New to America USA, how do you socialize and meet new people?

I recently moved to the USA, from the middle east. My English is pretty good, and I don’t have a lot of trouble communicating with people at work or in stores. I also don’t know anyone here at all, outside of work. All my family is still back in Gaza, and I’ve been here over a year now, and still feel cut off from American...

player2,

There’s a website / app called Meetup and there are local groups in almost every city for strangers to meet up for social events to get to meet new people and make friends.

I used it for a few months after moving to a new city and stopped once I made some personal connections and a friend group.

player2,

This is good advice! I listened to his podcast for a little while because I was interested in a particular guest and I wanted to hear what the guest had to say, not what Rogan thought. I found a few other guests I liked but I quickly stopped listening because Rogan always makes interviews about his interests and it grew old.

Paywalled. Where and why would the rental market be softening?

player2,

Does anyone else see the giant mannequins behind it?

player2, (edited )

Yes, it’s /c/piracy! Using torrents. Open source, community ran, providing free and equal access to information for all.

Or Usenet which is direct network access to enormous private digital media libraries to download to your own computer.

player2,

Be aware that Mullvad recently removed support for port forwarding if that matters to you. They’re no longer a preferred option for torrents for that reason. Other than that I enjoy using their service.

I feel the need to drop a link to some doom metal for any newcomers!

For anyone interested, here is a relevant documentary about how Earth is experiencing a sixth mass extinction event because of our actions like you mentioned.

My girlfriend and I both got Garmin watches and we absolutely love them. I got the Forerunner 265 and she got the venue 2sq. I like that they support both android and Apple, and don’t have subscriptions!

player2,

I got excited too when I clicked it and it worked!

player2,

Humans cause pollution so fewer humans = less pollution. It’s not that complicated.

player2,

Almost every modern human uses non-renewable resources and produces greenhouse gases either directly or indirectly. At the current rates it is unsustainable. It is the exponential growth of industry, technology, and human population that has caused the dramatic shift in climate change.

The top 10% earning Americans (>$178,000/year) created 40% of the nation’s pollution according to a recent study. And that factored in the industries they worked in. That still means that the majority of climate change is caused by the activity of normal people.

player2,

Advocating for overpopulation is fucking gross. The planet is already experiencing another mass extinction event.

player2,

I was skeptical but then I went to the Google store and looked at their USB-C cables and they are also USB 2.0 speeds.

player2,

Low Earth orbit is the safest orbit because the orbits will naturally degrade due to friction with the atmosphere and fall back to Earth after a set number of years without a boost.

Higher orbits are much worse because the satellites can be there forever and clog up space. Space is really big though, and we are not close to blotting out the sky with satellites, but we want to encourage the use of low Earth orbit whenever possible so we have control over it.

player2,

You can just disable it when it pops up. I hope it continues to warn new users when first setting it up.

If you tap the compass icon, it will change the view in Google maps from top down to prospective view.

player2,

Interesting, but the article does say that it happened with the guillotine.

When the guillotine was first introduced, some condemned criminals would pay executioners to sharpen the blade, ensuring a quick and relatively merciful end. Prisoners sentenced to beheading in certain eras in England would also pay their executioners, requesting execution in a single blow. In both of these senses, the payment was more like a bribe than a specific fee for services rendered, as it were.
