There was a poll that stated—Rowling’s opening line in the HP series is one of best in the world. Someone posted about how there are a bunch of other opening statements that are better.

Here’s one of my personal favorites, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez (English translated):
“It is inevitable. The scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.”

What are some of your favorite opening lines in literature? 😊

@DocCarms @bookstodon “It was a pleasure to burn” from Fahrenheit 451 has got to be up there. But for sheer comfort value my very favorite is “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.”

@ukaunz @DocCarms @bookstodon ok that just went on my list. I know nothing about it but I gotta see where that goes lol

What does Autistic Masking/Camoflaging mean to YOU?

Not what the definition is. Not what people on social media say. We say that all humans are different. Masking fits into that too.

Some of us can’t mask btw.

What is it to YOU?

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I started realizing that I was masking about the same time as I was starting transition and I still have a hard time telling the difference between masking and (early on) being in the closet or later, acting cis. It’s just a double whammy of concealing everything about your thoughts and experiences while trying to decide what the other person wants and how to give it to them. But yeah, similar to the point of indistinguishable

How do my comrades feel about self-check out at the supermarket?

@actuallyautistic

phoenixashes76,
@phoenixashes76@nerdculture.de avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I don’t like them. The beeps and the computer voice grate on me and the screens are too bright and some even have flashing colored lights. I’d way rather wear earphones in line until I get to the register and chit chat for two minutes with the cashier

I've seen an increasing number of posts on the fediverse about mansplaining, reply-guys and such (e.g. the different types of reply guy). This usually involves a very broad definition of the reply-guy concept, including "anyone who engages on a public post who isn't inflating my massive ego".

To my friends: this is a trap! If you offer ANY comment, engagement, or question except "this is so true/u r awesome" you will get blocked and/or patronised (even if you aren't explicitly criticising them). It's best to avoid the topic completely, even if there are some massive generalisations or over-simplifications, or if you feel its an interesting topic and compelled to discuss further, don't bother!

A lot of it feels like it is policing autistic people, with the double whammy that quite a few ASD people won't notice that it's a trap.

@foo @actuallyautistic before I transitioned engagement and information was “confident, good leadership, willingness to contribute” and now the same behavior is “reply guy/arrogant/sexist” and really it’s all infodumping. But not being able to share what I’m thinking anymore was a hell of a whiplash

Happy weekend, everyone! What are you ?? I'm reading a bunch of archiving, design, and metadata books for school, but also finally reading Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead, which is amazing of course, and listening to This Time Tomorrow, which is good fun so far and I haven't even gotten to the premise yet. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/594998/this-time-tomorrow-by-emma-straub/ I also picked up Immigrant Girl, Radical Woman from the library https://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501709845/immigrant-girl-radical-woman/

@owlislost @bookstodon I’m about halfway through and it’s still good but Lestat hasn’t gone full brat prince yet and I remember being over his shit later in the series so we’ll see lmao

@owlislost @bookstodon Definitely by Body Thief, I liked David and didn’t like how Lestat treated him

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I was diagnosed as a toddler but my parents didn’t believe the psychiatrist so they didn’t tell me for thirty years. At that time I was transitioning and meeting so many autistic people in the queer community and the more I heard about their experiences the more I realized I was experiencing the same things

phoenixashes76,
@phoenixashes76@nerdculture.de avatar

@yourautisticlife @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic funnily enough, before I found out, I would go into overload and think “wtf is the matter with me, I feel like a toddler having a meltdown!!” so maybe you’re not all that far off lmao

phoenixashes76,
@phoenixashes76@nerdculture.de avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic it helps a lot to know that I’m not alone, tbh, I didn’t know that until just now. Knowing enough to put a name to things I’m experiencing is a huge improvement. But I’m still looking into a formal diagnosis, that would be a game changer for all kinds of reasons

Serious thunderstorms, tornadoes possible, power flickering, black cat hovering fearfully nearby and I had to be deep in the middle of a Stephen King book. It’s gonna be a long night y’all

Why am I tempted to purchase more books when I have several unread stacks of books to read? 😅🤣📚

phoenixashes76,
@phoenixashes76@nerdculture.de avatar

@noellemitchell Buying books and reading books are two separate hobbies. They overlap occasionally, but can be enjoyed independently
