Such tales are widespread enough in German folklore that I assume that this kind of narrative was already well-established before the publication of "Das Kloster".

Late to the party, but a mythology-themed series of books I really enjoy is the line.

This setting takes place in a variant of the modern world - but the faiths of old have never gone away completely. And while the Gods have some excellent reasons to be discreet when acting in the world, the activities of the supernatural are still common enough if you know where to find them.

The default assumption is that the player characters are young descendants of the gods - the titular Scions - who gradually become aware of their heritage, and then try to fulfill their destiny.

I am currently running a Scion campaign that is heavily inspired by German folklore, and it's a lot of fun!

The cover of "Scion Book Two: Hero". A muscular, red-headed man stands in front of high-rise buildings. He carries an oversized revolver in his right hand, and two ravens fly around him. Lightning is visible in the sky.
The cover image of "Scion Book Three: Demogod". A Black Woman wearing a purple jacket his holding a top hat with a skull symbol in her right hand, and a wand with a skull with red eyes in her left hand. In the background, spirits of the dead fly around pillars.
The planned cover of "Scion Book Four: God". A man in the tress of an Aztec jaguar warrior is wielding an obsidian-tipped mace in his right hand and a shield in his left hand. His chest has been carved open, and his heart is surrounded by flames. A red skull is floating next to him. An Aztec pyramid is visible in the background.

@luigirenna @germany @folklore Eh, I think Venetians really were considered that weird and mysterious by German folklore.

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@Tim_Eagon @luigirenna @germany @folklore That, and they were apparently rather secretive about some of the rare minerals they were prospecting, since these were considered trade secrets of their glass production processes.

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@luigirenna @Tim_Eagon @germany @folklore These stories really got out of hand in Germany, and essentially form their own myth complex.

They are enough of them to fill an entire book, and one day I shall write it.

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@luigirenna @Tim_Eagon @germany @folklore

I'm currently getting a lot of mileage out of this in my campaign. One of the player characters is unknowingly a heir to one of the dynasties of Ultraterrestrial Venice - a dynasty that is currently in exile, and their struggle to return to power is going to be a major campaign arc.

He grew up as an adopted child of an Italian-German family and has started working as a lawyer. But now he is getting glimpses of these deeper background secrets, and he is trying to figure out what it all means.

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@luigirenna @Tim_Eagon @germany @folklore There are quite a few hints in some of the tales that these "Venetians" might not be entirely human, such as their oddly short stature.

I’ve been reading some of the criticism of the BBC creating their own Mastodon instance. Those against fall mostly into “they promote Transphobia” or “they skewed Brexit coverage” Both seem fair.

BBC creating an instance is good for Fediverse. Period. Just because they are on your street doesn’t mean you have to invite them in for tea or read/boost their posts / support them at all

BUT - If BBC fails no one else you DO want to read will follow here.

juergen_hubert,

@nonproductive I am of the opinion that centralized, commercially-run social media needs to be replaced by decentralized, non-commercial media platforms, as the former end up being very supportive of fascists and other bigots.

Thus, the more news organizations make the switch, the better. I mean, we can always call them out if they spread bullshit.

How common is it in the humanities that an academic journal does not accept "unsolicited manuscripts" (aka article submissions: Don't contact us, we contact you.) and then has a house style that is so prohibitive that it demands to use a specific typeface that's not even included by default in MS Office? To cap it all, it's in a discipline that when it was set up in the 70s, it was intended to break down sociocultural barriers. Culture may be ordinary, but so is gatekeeping it seems.
