Last night I finished Starling House by Alix Harrow. I had no idea what it was about when I started it, but I loved it. It's hard to describe without spoilers, but it's a complex story of families and poverty and bad luck woven into a great haunted house story. It wasn't scary, just creepy. Alix Harrow is now one of my favorite authors, she's brilliant. @bookstodon

I re-read Nicola Griffith's Hild a couple of weeks ago and edited that review. I made even more edits today, then added comments about the second book, Menewood. Both get my highest of recommendation. This link is for the full page.

Five stars: Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher (2023) is a novella retelling of Sleeping Beauty. The story was inspired in the process of writing a different retelling, namely, Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible (2016), written under the actual name, Ursula Vernon

@bookstodon Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern is probably my favorite book this year. It didn’t always make sense, but it also didn’t have to.

This book has some of the best setups and payoffs I have read in a very long time! Something innocuous mentioned in the first half can have a massive result in the second.

Above all, it made me feel so cozy.

@ClaymoreII @bookstodon yup yup! I wanted to climb right into the book and live there!

10 out of 10. THE HEAVEN & EARTH GROCERY STORE by James McBride is my favorite book of 2023 so far. It's a saga, a mystery, & a tale about racism and ableism. From Penguin Random House on August 8. @ewgc @bookstodon

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Stuart Turton has another winner on his hands! Turton did such a fantastic job of blending both mystery and sci-fi in this exciting new suspenseful mystery that will have you engrossed from beginning to end.

Like his others, it's a book I can't stop thinking about, and after you read it, you won't either.

You will have to wait a while for this book because it comes out in May 2024 but trust me, it's worth the wait!

I've finished: The Seventh Bride by T. Kingfisher

In time of war and stress I turn again to T. Kingfisher for some soothing escapism.

How can a blue beard re-imagining full of body horror be relaxing? Leave that to T. Kingfisher.

You just know that Rhea will get all the support she needs to succeed.

You’re the glue that keeps everyone together, and your disarming friendliness can help open doors that would otherwise be firmly locked." https://penguin.co.uk/articles/2023/11/quiz-which-member-thursday-murder-club-richard-osman @bookstodon
