Hi! I'm Jay - former British citizen who became a Dutch citizen in April 2022 (gave up my British citizenship). Pro-Europe, anti-Brexit and happily living in Utrecht with my amazing wife. I am a fan of #BrentfordFC, love reading on my e-reader (mainly mystery and psychological thrillers - recommendations welcome). I play squash, Candy Crush and am learning guitar. @bookstodon As we approach the end of 2023, I would love to know about the very best books you read this year. (They don't have to have been published in 2023 for your "best of" list.)

While you're reading your Kindle, it's reading you back. And:

"For those who prefer to purchase books from brick-and-mortar stores, tracking reading on book social site Goodreads, which is owned by Amazon, will put you back into the tech giant’s purview."

The article is from 2020, so I imagine the enshittification will be even worse by now, as AI use increases.

This is just one of the reasons I only read print books and don't use sites like Goodreads.

Doppelganger
A Trip Into the Mirror World

"What if you woke up one morning and found you'd acquired another self—a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but, in a twisted, upside-down way, furthered the very causes you'd devoted your life to fighting against?"

I've started reading this but there's so much dense information in it, I can only do about 10 pages a night.

I'm also reading James O'Brien's new book: How They Broke Britain

The Collapse of Complex Societies

Political disintegration is a persistent feature of world history. The Collapse of Complex Societies, though written by an archaeologist, will therefore strike a chord throughout the social sciences. Any explanation of societal collapse carries lessons not just for the study of ancient societies, but for the members of all such societies in both the present and future.

I'm from Hong Kong, so yes, I have. Singapore has eclipsed Hong Kong now after HK had a 20 year head start. Quite incredible

I've started reading Naomi Klein's 'Doppelganger', an interesting look both inside oneself and into one's 'shadow self'.

Klein is a highly skilled writer and teacher.

My review:

I’ll rate this somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars. It took a long time for me to actually finish reading this book. I picked it up and put it down so many times, because I was annoyed with the main character’s personality and behavior and I didn’t exactly enjoy the pacing. But once I finally was determined to finish it, everything I thought I knew about the story changed. Sarah Pearce wrote so many plot twists and turns, I never would’ve guessed the truth on my own. Besides the mystery of solving the murders was also Elin’s journey to the truth—not only of the current situation but also of her past. After all she’s experienced at Le Sommet, I hope she continues on a path of healing.

Side note… The truth behind the murders and the horrifying past of the hotel???? I almost want to call it unhinged.

📕The Stranger Beside Me by Caroline England 📕

I have read many of this author’s books & this one is a psychological thriller of the highest order.

Not a pacy read which is probably just as well, you need to catch your breath as you reach that ending! Fantastic & more like this please but let my heart rate settle first. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I completely judge a book by its cover.

It’s not fair to books that may not have that attractive of a cover, but it is what it is-most especially when it’s an author or title I am unfamiliar with. The book below is evidence of this. This cover completely grabbed ahold of my attention. Not only did I read the synopsis, but I also knew I wanted to paint the other half. This is an older picture, but I’ve finally started reading it. While the synopsis is not one I’d gravitate towards, I’m giving it a chance, & all b/c of the initial attraction to the cover. @bookstodon
