I read it and liked it as a teen back in the 90s. The book is a fantasy that portrays capitalism as a benevolent force that helps all who follow a few simple habits. Its an interesting look at American history, but are people still recommending it today?

gastationsushi,

You believe the right wing op ed writers at the times could ever get fired for their opinions? Bari Weiss was making mid 6 figures posting trash on the NYT before she accused her employer of discrimination to jump start coverage of her new substack.

Everyone is biased, it’s how the brain operates. Some biases try to reflect reality while others try to manipulate people to believe propaganda. The Times is perfectly fine employing propagandists.

gastationsushi,

People should vote for Biden over the other guy because the other guy is the worst.

But Biden and his team are fucking morons if they believe funding a genocide won’t cost them any votes. Democratic voters aren’t in a cult, don’t expect 100% of them to fall in line when their president doing extremely unpopular things.

gastationsushi, (edited )

And do what, vote for Republicans? If you really cared about genocide the Democrats are the only party that have a ceasefire now caucus the USA. The squad has been great.

Not any great options next November. I just want others to focus on blaming leaders because Americans get in a bad habit of blaming voters when time and again it’s the leaders doing stuff the voters never asked for.

gastationsushi,

They are all bad, even the “moderate gop” will always go along with the base instead of picking sanity.

gastationsushi,

What’s it called when Christians explain to their Jewish neighbors that any criticism of the Israeli government is actually anti-Semitism?

gastationsushi,

Nvidia owners on that comment on the AMD sub reddit care a bunch about ray tracing.

gastationsushi,

I bought an 4.7 rated amplifier on Amazon that broke the first day. Looking at the reviews closer, I noticed they were 100% paid reviewers.

When I tried to leave a negative review, Amazon stopped me, giving a generic message about fake reviews on this product. This product is still out their with a high rating and no way for actual purchasers like me to warn other customers.

gastationsushi,

Yep vines, never paid attention to them until this happened.

Are they all fake or something?

gastationsushi,

Applying for asylum shouldn’t be illegal. Unless you are Trump or Biden and you want play politics with immigration.

gastationsushi,

I grew up believing all loans is money banks lend you from their own money they have on hand. But that is a lie. That money is created by the fed reserve when the paperwork is signed. And all the bank has to do is follow rules their lobbyists write.

Why do we even need private banks? I bet people could handle their own fianaces a lot better if we had direct access to fed money creation and we didn’t let bank lobbyists write the rules.

gastationsushi,

Fuck these judges rigging the system in favor of monopolies.

That google judge was very concerned disclosing earnings would reveal company secrets so they allowed google to hide them in the trial. But they are publicly traded and required to disclose earnings…

Elon lied about the monkeys — and he shouldn't be trusted to put his Neuralink chips in human brains.

"They are claiming they are going to put a safe device on the market, and that's why you should invest," Ryan Merkley at the Physicians Committee, told Wired. "And we see his lie as a way to whitewash what happened in these exploratory studies."

Really heartbreaking reading what happened to the monkeys.

People quite rightly think of Elizabeth Holmes as a fraud for making false medical claims about what the Theranos machines could do. So why aren't Elon's claims at Neuralink being held to the same level of scrutiny?

gastationsushi,

The government convicted Michael Vick after they found out what happened to his dogs. Same government turning a blind eye to Elon’s monkeys and giving him a green light to experiment on humans. Elon playing through capitalism in god mode RN.

gastationsushi,

What are you trying to say, law enforcement would take down Elon’s lab if only there were laws against animal abuse?

gastationsushi,

I think you get me wrong. I don’t feel sorry for Michael Vick. I just think this is more proof how money infects our regulatory system.

Look at food regulation. I’ve seen regulators shut down and jail independent operations for white glove violations. But look how major suppliers and food chains are treated when their contaminated food sends people to the hospital where some die.

gastationsushi,

This would be bad if lemmy had a board trying to push an IPO.

Bought a Ryzen CPU from Amazon, got an empty box (imgur.com)

I wanted to put a warning out there for others like myself planning to build a new PC. I started using pcpartpicker and after enough price comparisons, I ended up buying a CPU from Amazon. Keeping an eye on the tracking updates, I pulled it inside as soon as it arrived so it wouldn’t be stolen off my porch....

gastationsushi,

I’ve had similar issues with Amazon warehouse deals. Years ago they were a great deal and they actually labeled their condition accurately.

gastationsushi,

Isn’t this the point of capitalism? Is there a single industry out there that wouldn’t collapse without the welfare it receives from Uncle Sam?

The GDP gap between Europe and the United States is now 80% (www.lemonde.fr)

It was early this summer, before Americans started crossing the Atlantic to savor the sweetness of European life. Prices are very much affordable for them there, and the Wall Street Journal gave the reason as being Europe’s inexorable impoverishment: “Europeans are facing a new economic reality, one they haven’t...

gastationsushi,

I live in Oklahoma, apparently better than Germany. Out-of-state corporations buy off our politicians. This means they get insane tax cuts among other sketchier tax schemes. Having low pay employees is one of our main draws for new businesses. Unemployment here is very low, but there isn’t much of a reason to stay in state when you are looking for a job. Our education system is getting worse and worse, good teachers leave the state every year and the leaders are doing jack shit to retain them.

gastationsushi,

Unfair to compare democratic voters to republicans, democrats aren’t in a cult.
