fibojoly,

You gotta give it to him, it’s a bit more impressive than a “Mission Accomplished” banner. Also safer than trying to do it on whatever passes for an aircraft carrier in the Russian navy these days, I guess.

fibojoly,

What? The developer whose UI has been consistently shite from game to game, only for mods to come to the rescue, has released yet another obnoxious UI? Whose games are pretty much universally “great with mods”, is meh right out the gate? Colour me shocked!

fibojoly,

It’s like…lyrically challenged rap, if you will.

Imagine a kid trying to imitate an Eminem song, but they didn’t really understand most of the words so they just mumble shit and speak a word or two here and there and kinda get the beat right so you still recognize the song. That’s pretty much mumble rap.

fibojoly,

I just tell myself that at least I’m a patron of the arts, keeping the hobby alive by voting with my wallet, till I find a way to play again.

fibojoly,

I have fond memories of RPL on the HP48 calculators where you would give arguments as a stack, then call the function. Something like (a+b)*c could be written C A B + * Such fun!

fibojoly,

That’s the one. The Wikipedia article has some extensive examples, too.

Its weird syntax prepared us well to face the horror of assembly language later on, so I have a certain fondness for it. That and I had absolutely no point of comparison at the time, haha!

fibojoly,

So like the vast majority of PCs still run on 1060 instead of whatever the latest shit is? Sounds pretty reasonable, especially if you want mobile gaming.

fibojoly,

It really is. It’s great seeing how much progress the game had made in a few years, although it’s still far from perfect.

fibojoly,

Well, I learnt a new word today. So that’s nice.

fibojoly,

Wow, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Payday 3 developer drops Denuvo from the game before it's even out (www.pcgamer.com)

It's common practice for PC games today to launch with Denuvo, a form of DRM designed to stop the spread of pirated copies of games, and it's also common practice for developers to remove Denuvo several months after launch as interest (and the risk of piracy) dwindles. Less common is a developer publicly announcing it's removing...

fibojoly,

That’s a super interesting take on the whole issue. Good food for thought, thanks!

fibojoly,

Once they decided that they were an ad providing platform, because that’s where the money is at. Not sure if mister Reekshityellow was already at the helm for that one, but I’m guessing so, given how shitty an idea it is.

fibojoly,

I keep telling them the same thing.
Our jobs involve working with people in offices on the other side of France and that’s no problem, surely. Therefore what difference does it make if a remote worker is at home rather than on a different site? None. It’s all bullshit to control people, just like you said.
You should see HR people squirming trying to justify that one…

fibojoly,

Back in the day, when bandwidth was precious and porn sites would parcel a video into 10 second extracts, one per page, you could zip a bunch of these mpeg files together into an uncompressed zip, then rename it .mpeg and read it in VLC as a single video. Amazing stuff.

fibojoly,

No. The Office ???x files are archives. Inside them you can find folders with resources. Among those, you can find files written in markup languages.

Not quite the same thing.

Just rename your .docx file as .zip to check its contents.

fibojoly,

“Magic bytes”? We just called them headers, back in my day (even if sometimes they are at the end of the file)

fibojoly,

You can just go in Folder View and uncheck “hide known file extensions” to fix that! ;)

fibojoly,

Civilisation (forget which) runs on an SQLite DB. I was rather surprised when I discovered this, back then.

fibojoly,

I did not know about that one! It makes sense though, because a lot of headers would start with, well yeah, “magic numbers”. Makes sense.

fibojoly,

Sounds an awful lot like a normal day at work as a dev.

fibojoly,

Next thing, you gonna tell us SSLv3 isn’t military grade?!

fibojoly,

More likely a single Excel file somewhere on the network shared by the entire company. It’s grrrrreat!

fibojoly,

After many years (10+), I finally find a company that actually, really, implements CI/CD. Then I look at the tests and it’s actually the most inane shit imaginable, tacked on top of ancient existing code, not maintained. I spent more time fixing the stupid tests than actually fixing the bugs I was tasked fixing. Amazing.

fibojoly,

The ones I have seen so far are probably written by the same people who don’t understand the usefulness of comments, I reckon. And maintained with the same enthusiasm.

fibojoly,

The sad part is feeling so happy yet having no one to really share it with, because most likely you were working alone to solve the issue and when you explain the whole thing it sounds so silly… like trying to explain how funny a joke you made was. “I guess you had to be there”.

fibojoly,

Religion is a private matter. When you start spreading it all over the place, then no, it has no place in school or in our (France) society in general.
I was the victim of this attitude when I was a teen and my family wanted me to follow our religion and yet I still agree with this attitude. My main beef wasn’t with the institution but with how specific teachers decided to deal with me. Ultimately I got over religion, and hopefully some of those kids will, too.

fibojoly,

Running With Scissors, the developer behind Postal.

fibojoly,

Lawful implies that they respect the laws…

fibojoly,

I’m not sure how this is surprising anyone at all, honestly.

The problem (but not for Bethesda) is that we are so used to mods that we seem to forget how absolutely shite a lot of their vanilla UI is. Has everybody forgotten the Skyrim map? Coz I sure as shit have not.
Did they somehow miraculously fix it all in Fallout 4? Genuine question, I kinda gave up on them after Skyrim.

fibojoly,

Man, imagine going to jail for something so stupid as posting some shit earlier than some other schmucks, for something that’s probably gonna be buggy as fuck from the get go…

fibojoly,

We are this close of having a proper RPG that’s also a proper AVN.

fibojoly,

Come on! who the fuck gets anywhere beyond the character creator within 2 hours? ;)

fibojoly,

I was working for a team that did quality control on the code of an entire financial group and it’s still amazing to me the shit we let through.
I feel annoyed even having compiler warnings in my code and here we were downgrading errors into warnings so the code would go through, or adding rules exceptions for a program so the team responsible could push a hotfix to prod… It’s all shit. All the way down.

I dream of working with such a strict language.

fibojoly,

Or, possibly, she gets promised a very lucrative position at Amazon in a few years if she toes the line…

fibojoly,

I’m more of a Cenobite, myself. Why run if I can just track you?

fibojoly,

And here we have the typical “Fuck you, I got mine” attitude. How lovely.

fibojoly,

“Hey you guys, come and use our totally free online thing. We promise we won’t use anything you do for our own gains! Pinky swear!”

fibojoly,

Uh, did you miss the updates and even a full extension to TQ that were released recently? Didn’t look like the devs wanted to abandon that IP. Glad to see they went all the way and made a full new game!

fibojoly,

Will it make it to Steam at some point, I wonder?

fibojoly,

It’s great fodder for the “games are murder simulators” crowd?

fibojoly,

The guy I know who uses gasmasks everywhere does it because it’s a fetish.

fibojoly,

Almost like real engineers planned for such an event!

fibojoly,

So what does that mean for Skyblivion and Skywind?

fibojoly,

You can’t call yourself X and then not go all dark, that makes perfect sense.
I’m just waiting for the Radio X-like slogans, for the full effect : “we’re the end of the alphabet people, that’s got to mean something, but we don’t know what”
