special interests are really about hierarchy of motivations…

I spend a lot of my time being pissed off at interruptions/intrusions/diversions to whatever I happen to be focussed on in that moment, however compelling or tedious it happens to be.

If, however (as just happened), someone asks me a question about stationery, or dog breeds, or the astronomical tides, or the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement, I’m going to drop literally ANYTHING else I’m doing to deal with that.

@drandrewv2@freeradical.zone avatar

I literally CAN’T NOT.

The dodgiest example of this is when I’m driving, and I see someone walking an interesting dog… 8-|

And now I consciously understand how it works, I see that I intuitively have been working it against fellow monotropic neurodivergents my whole life - parents, siblings, colleagues and PhD supervisors - to derail their efforts to talk about things I don’t wanna talk about. 😳

@actuallyautistic I'm going to test deliberately leaning full into the beige diet.

Everywhere I see two things:

  1. Autistic people preferring simple carbohydrates, (potato, bread, pasta) and proteins that are ground, (e.g. nuggets), or soft, (e.g. beans).

  2. Non-autistic people insisting this dietary preference so many have, entirely independent of one another and of even knowing we're autistic, is inherently wrong and is an eating disorder.

I have an alternative theory outlined in next post

@drandrewv2@freeradical.zone avatar

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic I dunno… surely the lack of variety of nutrients and fibre comes at a cost, and it’s hard to say that our digestive disorders aren’t at least partially caused by that skew to our gut flora.

I am v same-food, and I get stressed out if the textures/flavours/colours are not predictable… (to illustrate: I went veggie 30 years ago due to one weird chicken nugget that still haunts me), but I fit as much nutrition as possible into what I do eat.

drandrewv2,
@drandrewv2@freeradical.zone avatar

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic And at that point I think we’re on the same page. Like, I typically eat the same 3 meals every day of the week (except on the days when I eat the same thing for breakfast, lunch and dinner), but it has colourful vegetables, and nuts and lentils, and it might seem weird to other people, but I doubt it’s that much less healthy than other people’s diets… it’s all back to arbitrary, normative social customs. And really, THAT shit can fuck off.

drandrewv2,
@drandrewv2@freeradical.zone avatar

@alexisbushnell @ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic I’m not suggesting it’s just that, and of course there are individual differences… but I think it’s hard to rule out that it plays a role at the population level

Does anybody else feel like your simply being "chucked under the bus" or "left to get on with it" because your an adult and not a child anymore with autism?!

I do feel like It does.

I understand this might well create abit of a backlash, but it's not necessarily something I have seen talked about on here.

Please feel free to discuss.

@AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic It’s not a comparison I can make: I was one of the army of unrecognised autistic kids “left to get on with it” throughout childhood too, so I guess my expectations of society are dismally low.

On the plus side, it’s been a revelation how my best friends, family and colleagues are willing to support me when I’m able to explain the kinds of support I need.

Fascinating article on

https://magazine.hms.harvard.edu/articles/behind-veil-hypnagogic-sleep

It’s one of my favourite things about my crosswired brain (and a lifesaver during episodes of insomnia) that I’ve always had significant control over my hypnagogic state, though it wasn’t until a few years ago that I found out what it was and that not everyone can (or maybe they just don’t know how?)

Anyone else? Maybe my kindred? @actuallyautistic

@Maker_of_Things @actuallyautistic I’m FASCINATED by stories of people who came up with discoveries/inventions in dreams. Kekule and Mendeleev are favourites… both have that incredible visual element to the solution.

@Maker_of_Things @actuallyautistic YES YES YES! ❤️

@Maker_of_Things @actuallyautistic I also use that quiet time and multidimensional ‘canvas’ to tinker with ideas… and sometimes I just have fun with it.

Like, I’ll give my brain a word and wait and see what it comes up with. Like if I think ‘horse’, it might conjure up a photographic image, or an animated cartoon horse, or sometimes a really tangential connection to the concept. That’s what keeps me from panicking when I can’t sleep 💁‍♀️

Oddly specific request. Are there any researchers here interested in 1960s-1970s labour unions and/or clothing? I sent an email to the Cornell collection too. :)
