davidgro, to android in What Android apps are worth paying for?

Titanium Backup became worthless when split APKs became a thing after it stopped updating. Looks like oandbackup claims to support them, but I see an open issue about some split APK apps not working after a restore (which is what TiBu did)

Edit: So in the spirit of OPs question, an app I gladly paid for was Swift Backup

The circumstances might ‘prove’ to a lot of people that there is

davidgro, to technology in Bots are better than humans at cracking ‘Are you a robot?’ Captcha tests, study finds

Bots on Reddit already steal parts of upvoted comments and post them elsewhere in the same post to get upvotes themselves (so the account can be used for spam later)

Even with context they can be very difficult to spot sometimes.

davidgro, to android in How does everyone feel about Google Pixel phones?

Yup. I also really liked the “second screen” method of handling the camera cutout

davidgro, to android in How does everyone feel about Google Pixel phones?

When I finally had to leave my dying old phone (LG V20 from 2016) the Pixel 7 phones were about to be released, so I preordered a P7Pro. It’s been really good to me so far.
Reception is at least as good as my last phone, fingerprint reader works nearly every time on the first try, battery life is… Ok (but I work it really hard) root was easy (one of my primary criteria for phone shopping), etc.

There are certainly things I lost in the move, but most of them I’d lose with any modern flagship phone: Removable battery, headphone jack, IR port, 100% usable screen area. And one loss that is specific to the P7 phones for now, but will eventually be all of them: 32-bit apps.

Android 13 does have some annoying restrictions that Android 8 did not, but it also has a lot of improvements (including general stability) and of course 12 GB of RAM can do much more than 4 could, so that’s a nice upgrade.

davidgro, to asklemmy in What are the best Video Game Soundtracks?

It really does. I think their music budget is probably larger than some AAA games’ entire budget.

Obtaining usable energy at any hour of the day and in any weather for one thing. That will be less important as batteries or other grid scale systems improve, but for now it’s a big factor.

Total potential output per m^2 is another factor, especially in higher density areas

davidgro, to technology in The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won.

You’re right, what I meant was if it doesn’t shrink by a lot as users go back to Reddit (for those niche topics for example)

davidgro, to technology in The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won.

As far as I am concerned, the goal was to get them to renegotiate the API pricing and restrictions, at the risk of the IPO tanking if they didn’t - even if they would have to fire Steve Huffman first.

So yeah, it was a failed protest. If Lemmy continues to grow I’ll continue to spend most of my time here, but that seems like it’s no guarantee.

… Of course if (as in when) Reddit removes old.reddit then I’ll never return there beyond holding my nose when trying to access search results. But 90%ish of the users are already on new reddit/official app and just don’t care.

davidgro, to nostupidquestions in Can flies recognize that I'm holding a flyswatter?

Here. I have a few of the “2.0” model at my house and it’s great for bugs which have landed or don’t fly, hitting them in the air is tough.

They have other colors, and apparently now even a CO₂ powered pistol for really big bugs (with proprietary ammo refills, no thanks)

Of the liquids you listed, I think the hydrogen peroxide would be the fastest and most flame-filled death, more than the magma.

100% H2O2 is Very much unlike the 3% kind that can be purchased at a store.
It might even explode, I know shipping tanks of it can and I think that’s usually under 100%.

davidgro, to asklemmy in What movies, books or tv shows are meant to spoof/parody a particular genre while actually being a great example of the genre?

Totally different but the same description would work for it: Cabin in the Woods
