Certainly, but none of those technologies completely replaced things. The existing way of doing things became hobbies and remain the preference over the technology which disrupted the field.
Not to mention, technologies will sometimes flop, only to resurface later in a completely different package. The PDA was maybe popular for a year? But now we all have smartphones which effectively capture that concept. The Wii U failed, but the Switch has been wildly popular.
It’s probably premature to say that AI will completely fail, but also that AI will completely replace everything. I just used a Polaroid camera this past weekend at a wedding, and it was enjoyable in a way digital cameras or phones wouldn’t have been. I still write things out at work, particularly if I’m trying to wrap my head around some math or a difficult concept. Typing it out doesn’t work as well.
I think it is safe to say that there are some things AI will never be able to replace, just like there are some things digital cameras couldn’t replace, nor our phones.
I think LLMs will be fundamentally unable to do certain things because of how they function. They’re only as good as what they’re trained on, and with how fast and loose companies have been with that, they’ll have formed patterns based on incorrect information.
Fundamentally, it doesn’t know what it generates. If I ask for a citation, it’ll likely give me a result that seems legit, but doesn’t actually exist.
can raise levels of cancer-causing benzene above what’s been observed from secondhand smoke.
Yeah this is fairly concerning, I usually think of benzene as super carcinogenic. They actually limit how much of it can be used in gasoline for that reason.
I’d probably want to compare benzene content from various sources and consult the OSHA guidelines before saying how bad this is, but there’s no doubt in my mind that this decidedly bad. You’re getting directly and consistently exposed to the benzene.
I don’t think so, because the benzene source isn’t right there in front of you like with a stove burner. The fireplace is probably alright because of the chimney, and the larger worry there would be particulate matter and smoke anyway.
Where does the exhaust from the furnace and water heater go? If it goes through a vent system and then outside it should be fine. It might be fine otherwise even, if it becomes diluted when becoming in the general atmosphere of your home.
Disclaimer, I am not an expert on emissions nor venting. I studied chemistry and chem eng in college, but this isn’t my professional field.
I actually agree with your opinion, but that’s not why you were downvoted. It was because you concluded it had to be messages in support of Palestinians that were being deleted.
Look at the comment I’m replying to. It’s net positive at this time, 7-3. The issue isn’t what you’re saying at all – this comment is incredibly sensible and very apt condemnation of Israel’s government.
The issue was the people who not only believed that, but also believed the Hamas was justified in killing civilians and everything else they did. That Hamas got a pass for it all because they were fighting Israel.
That should strike you and me as not only disgusting, but incredibly ironic. The extremes of this issue actually make the exact same argument, that X is justified in all its actions because Y wronged them. They just switch X and Y, and pick events from history that support their claim – and there are events which fit both.
They have some secret source that they all know about that makes them more knowledgeable than everyone else. Because if they had to admit that wasn’t the case, their worldview and arrogance falls apart.
“The US must be to blame for Russia invading Ukraine because I said so and I’ve only read books on the ‘US bad’ side like a real intellectual!”
We are cooperative because it is in our self interest. The only inherent trait of humanity is selfishness. Communist leaders who say some are more equal than others to enrich themselves, capitalists who hoard billions from minimum wage labor – they’re the exact same.
It’s like efficiency of machinery and rotating equipment. It can never reach 100%, but you can try to get close to it. 100% efficiency and communism are both unattainable ideals.
After serving more than a month of in-school suspension over his dreadlocks, a Black student in Texas was told he will be removed from his high school and sent to a disciplinary alternative education program on Thursday....
Her comment suggests the videos of interest are being filmed by the freedom fighters.
I am unaware of any armed Palestinian group which fights the Israeli government for their independence. Who is the only other group that someone could (somehow) construe as freedom fighters that’s taking videos?
Unless she’s calling the Israeli army freedom fighters and they have people filming in their midst, there’s only one group she can be talking about, and they went through a music festival with guns.
Don’t stop at just reading the comment. Comprehend it. Analyze it.
Edit: And that includes your own comments. There are indeed other groups involved which aren’t Hamas, and she was referring to civilians. Incredibly poor wording if she’s telling the truth, but I see no reason to not give her that benefit of the doubt.
It was a very poor choice of wording to say freedom fighters to refer to civilians. It was just as poor to mention videos without any information whatsoever on the contents of the videos. Perhaps this is one giant misunderstanding.
Either way, a statement referring to a video from freedom fighters in the region right now without any context immediately brings to mind the carnage from the terrorist attack.
Yeah I’ll agree with that. It was exceptionally poor wording and it comes down to the benefit of the doubt if you believe she worded it poorly vs … yeah. But the deserves the benefit of the doubt.
Our society has a problem with making everything absolutes. Trevor Noah had a great comment once about this where he brought up cats vs dogs and he asked why society suggests we have to pick one and can’t just like both.
Because of that, any dissent or criticism is seen as being against something. You think nuclear energy should be encouraged? Clearly you just want to drill for more oil and spew as much carbon as possible! You think this meme is an utterly illogical and dishonest comparison? Well clearly you must support the ubiquity of oversized cars with poor efficiency, and you don’t think our cities need more transportation options or walk ability!
All of this is to say, you’re right on the money. We have to call out bullshit like this when we see it on “our side” and criticize it as ridiculous. We need to recognize that OP is well intentioned, but this is a nonsensical/extreme take. Extremism forms when these people don’t get called out and a group chastises internal criticism.
You should still wear a helmet. It isn’t there for cars, it’s there because going from biking speed to no speed is more than enough acceleration to cause injury.
California became the first state in the nation to prohibit four food additives found in popular cereal, soda, candy and drinks after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a ban on them Saturday....
All proteins are not singular molecules, but the ones that are… are. Proteins are actually classified partly by if they are a single molecule or several (quartenary structure). Polymers, as long as the chain of bonds isn’t broken, are giant molecules by definition.
I get what you mean here, that a single molecule doesn’t cause harm and quantity matters, and I agree. It would just be technically correct to say non-polymer molecules.
As someone with a chemistry background it’s a real pet peeve of mine when people fearmonger about benign chemicals or go “if I can’t pronounce it then it shouldn’t be in my food!” And it helps absolutely no one that there are cases where the FDA bends to the industry.
If you asked me if I’d rather soak my exposed hands in benzene for an hour, or eat food with any of these now banned products, I would instantly pick the food without question. The public isn’t necessarily aware that some things are far more carcinogenic than others.
And to add to that, we’ve got things which cause harm because of their physical properties, not chemical. All particulate matter is horrible for our lungs and can cause cancer and permanent damage, but the matter itself could be totally benign. It’s why even nicotine free cigarettes cause some harm – all smokes have suspended particulate matter. It’s a concern with vaping that metal nanoparticles might be generated too.
I know I’m preaching to the choir here. We just don’t have the public education nor warnings necessary to actually represent these things accurately.
Not to mention, the discussion around it is if these are actually toxic or not. It would be correct to highlight toxicity as a subject of debate with quotes.
As an Indian I completely disagree. Caste discrimination should’ve died a long time ago, and it being a socioeconomic + cultural thing makes it difficult to target with discrimination laws.
Just amend the bill to ban any religious based discrimination where someone is considered lesser.
This is exactly why conservatives said they vetoed enshrining gay marriage in federal law. Instead of owning up to being bigots, they said “oh but the law already covers that”.
I’ve come to learn that “the law already covers that so it’s unnecessary” is a smoke screen and deflective argument.
Well here’s the question, is an AI detection software legal if it’s trained to identify this material? Strictly speaking, unless it is 100% free, selling the AI software would be profiting off the illegal material that you used to teach the AI.
Do your damnedest to keep them away. I’ve come to realize that the core of modern conservativism bypasses nationalities. All Western conservative leaders have the same goals.
(Conservative here meaning socially conservative largely. Fascists, not all capitalists necessarily)
Amen, Republicans saw the gradual erosion of sexism and took that personally. I suspect part of this now is revenge.
We need groups like the Satanic Church to fight fire with fire. Sue against things that could possibly hurt a fetus if you got pregnant tomorrow. Undue stress at work? Being exposed to harmful vapors and substances? Being treated roughly by police? Sue the ever living fuck out of them.
I don’t doubt that Republicans will apply a double standard, but we need to make sure that double standard is constantly broadcasted so the people turn on them.
Easy solution, prescribe birth control treatment in tandem. Require insurance to pay.
It’s pretty simple really. If someone is taking a medication that creates problems if they become pregnant, and they don’t want to become pregnant, give them treatment to prevent them from becoming pregnant!
Mike Dulak grew up Catholic in Southern California, but by his teen years, he began skipping Mass and driving straight to the shore to play guitar, watch the waves and enjoy the beauty of the morning. “And it felt more spiritual than any time I set foot in a church,” he recalled....
That’s just unpopular opinions, and I’ve made plenty of those before. It’s very different from doing something that my community thinks is a cosmic sin that will send me to hell.
I think another aspect to consider is that after the pandemic, multigenerational homes have become more common. There could be a really great sense of community in having a bunch of large families raise their children as a village.
Of course. It’s the nature of the disagreement. And unpopular opinion about random topics is just an unpopular opinion. People will see me as an idiot, ignorant, or stupid. They may think I have questionable morals or priorities. But that’s it. I’m just another stupid person on the Internet. I can have some of these disagreements with friends where I have an unpopular opinion, but depending on the severity it’s inconsequential.
With a sin though, I’ve done something that goes against God’s word and rules. If I don’t ask for forgiveness, I will be eternally punished for it. Disagreements here are disagreements on what God says, which is heresy.
