All programs should tell you where they store config files (utcc.utoronto.ca)

I wholeheartedly agree with this blog post. I believe someone on here yesterday was asking about config file locations and setting them manually. This is in the same vein. I can't tell you how many times a command line method for discovering the location of a config file would have saved me 30 minutes of googling.

With Synaptic, you can show all files associated with a package. That includes config files. Saved be a lot if hassle on numerous occasions.

I like it. Short and to the point.

It'll come from within the army. Priggy failed because he could not find enough support. As soon as someone comes along who does, it'll be game over for Putler.

Just think how many highways, malls and parking lots we could build on all this land! It's outrageous!

I read Ilium and Olympos a few years ago and all i remember us that i thought they're a bunch of pretentious crap. So no, don't bother.

I think there will be a considerable movement away from Reddit. It might not be very huge in numbers but it will be a lot if the users who are most engaged and contribute a lot of content and time as moderators. These are the people who help create a quality experience for the casual users that seem to be all that counts these days. Losing them will make for a worse experience overall and this hurt the site and ultimately the bottom line.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

Agreed. I use it much less than I used to and post a lot less. So that's obviously going to lead to an appreciable loss of quality ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ

A few US senators. Maybe a Supreme Court judge or two, just for good measure. And a super-yacht, obviously.

I really really hate Zuckerberg but I'd root for him anyway.

Xeelee,

Hahahaha, der war gut. Diese Geringverdiener haben vielleicht Ideen.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

This is a very short-sighted way of looking at things. The real crunch will come on June 30th when the third party apps stop working. That will cause many people to switch away from Reddit or at least reduce their usage. Also, the current shenaigans will have a long term negative effect on the quality of moderation and thus the quality of content. And people will think twice about putting a lot of effort into producing content. They've been on a downward slope in this regard for a long time but this will only accelerate it.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

That is a possibility. I hope it'll turn out differently. But basically I'm done with Reddit. My main hope is that kbin/lemmy become viable alternatives.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

Reddit used to be some kind of refuge from the unmitigated cesspool of corporate bullshit that other social media have become. Or so I kept telling myself. The fact is they're doing all they can right now to jump headlong into said cesspool. Social media that isn't centralized and owned by greed driven megacorporations is the only way forward in my opinion. I hope kbin/lemmy/Mastodon can become that.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

After June 30th it'll be lights out for me. I've been using Reddit mostly through apps and without those I'm definitely out.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

He won't. He has his head stuck up his own arse far too deep for that. The only hope is he gets ousted.

I drive a Tesla. my excuse is, I bought before he went full fascist. I don't think I'll buy another one.

They're already doing an electric Transit in Europe. For most work related use cases it's an altogether better vehicle.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

I owe one to myself every time this asshole posts some far right bullshit on Twitter. Really makes just want to torch the car, sometimes. Won't do that cause it's a fine car and utterly innocent, of course.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

That makes the whole thing rather pointless, doesn't it?

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, but the hallmark of a useful scientific theory is that it makes testable predictions.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

No. Even if the predictions couldn't be tested at the time there was a clear path to doing it. That's different. This is (in my very limited understanding) more like string theory.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

Oh noes! I cannot has my imaginary internet points! sad kitty noises

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

I with you here but we should avoid fragmentation by all means. Having two competing platforms that aren't interoperable would be a huge disservice.,

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

Yes, and that is something we should promote as much as we can.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

The metaphor isn't quite correct. Mods aren't paid, after all.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

How's the dental practice doing, Fred?

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

I had one like that in the late nineties. Felt like pure luxury at the time.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

The media made Trump because he drove "engagement". Also, purpose of the whole media circus is to create an illusion of political choice. To that end they always drone on about being "balanced". If one guy says two plus two is four and the other says it's five, they'll report on the "contoversy".

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

If you look at the photos, a gas leak definitely seems the most likely. But that's of course just speculation right now.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

If you're in Europe you're legally entitled to have your data removed. If Reddit keeps up this crap, I'll do that after June 30th.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

He doesn't do this stuff personally. This is all done by (poorly written) scripts.

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

Repeat after me:

"Bier her, aber zackig!"

"Wo gibt's hier die beste Schweinshaxe, Du Hurensohn?"

"Nein, ich habe keine Fahrkarte, Du Möchtegern-Blockwart!"

"Ich rede nicht mit Subalternen. Bringen Sie mir sofort den Geschäftsführer!"

Exquisit. Wenn die so weiter machen, dann mach ich das tatsächlich.

Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

I mean there's Reddit ofc, as well as Twitter in its entirety, Discord is implementing some dumb updates, there are issues with Tumblr as well as everything to do with Meta, and I'm sure there are plenty more (and I haven't even touched other digital media, for example the Sims). Why is it all happening in the span of about a...

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

The main sticking point is profitability. Not many platforms have managed to create a business model that's sustainably profitable. Reddit certainly hasn't. Now they're basically looking for a way to cash out so they're prioritising short term profitability over everything.
