TL;DR — at age 14, Peter Capaldi was so miffed that another teenager had been appointed by the BBC to run Official Doctor Who Fan Club, he ran a one man letter writing campaign to take over the post and club himself....
Old enough to have heard some of the scrattle in real time - some of the most annoying young fans are now the ones responsible for the best of the new series, so, yannow, suckit.
There’s a few instances in McCoy’s era in particular - the dude was on the ball with OH&S. More than one cast member has credited Sylvester with outright saving their life
The whovian in me screeches the toymaker came first, the trekker points out that while Q seems to have some peculiar moral purpose the Toymaker is just an eternal ancient who sets shit on fire for fun.
Also supernovas can harm Q IIRC. The Toymaker, not so much.
A U.S. judge on Monday upheld Texas' ban on state employees', including public university employees, using Chinese-owned short video app TikTok on state-owned devices or networks....
…considering the term is nearly sixty years old i’d say no.
Edit: exposing myself as an olde farte but in fandom circles back in the day there was a sharp line between trekker and trekkie . Oooh you didn’t want to be seen as a trekkie, they were the fans that …well looking back at it, the trekkies were openly obsessed over the series and had all the fun cosplaying and being free about it, the trekkers were the ones that pretended they weren’t mad about trek and thus were allowed out into respectable society. Cringe factor i suppose. Heh. But old name habits remain.
It’s also an age thing - I mean every fandom has Those Fans, but in general being a fan of something and buying / wearing merch is now nbd. Nerd’s gone mainstream.
Back when those terms were coined? Sooo not the case. Like, it could literally get you beaten. Wild times.
Because classic trek - for all its reaching for the stars and left leanings - is still very much rooted in and reflects the US postwar mindset. We are the good guys! The best guys! We do no wrong! Which is a trough that right wingers like to feed at.
Literally the case, the first couple eps were written for fartjock executives. Ep 4 onwards were written for the show. It’s why there’s a sudden stratospheric upswing
Thing is it’s not the humour, it’s the humanity. Showing all the crew are just as dorky as your average human today, not all stick-wedged paragons like TNG. Think of the top time funniest moments - getting Bortus to eat a cactus, 500 cigarettes, karaoke, the moustache, the dancing bandito, isaac’s joke fail… the humour is there, but it’s the humanity that makes them. that’s where s3 kinda fell down a bit, i don’t know if it was covid rush or what, but we missed a lot of the warmer moments. Season finale delivered though.
Pretty much the title. I’ve been watching more realistic super hero shows like The Boys and Invincible. The reoccurring themes is that with great power comes great immorality....
You ever see a dog that’s got its leash tangled the long way round a table leg, and it just cannot grasp what the problem is or how to fix it? It can see all the components laid out in front of it, but it’s never going to make the connection....
That’s why bakers are so chill. You learn the hard way that nothing matters and you have so very little control over the universe. Consequently you deal or go mad.
God, the planets inspired pretty much every goddamn sci fi soundtrack. Everyone gets the imperial march, but i’m talking right back before even Haskin’s War of the Worlds and Journey to the centre of the earth, past SW and wrath of khan and into Foundation.
well it’s not an inherited illness but yeah, the whole thing was “a human brain can’t handle that much dumped into it” which is why she had to forget. Processor overload.
