What a shame. A lot of guys will have worked hard on this, perhaps going on a journey from initial enthusiasm at the novel gimmick to anxiety over real-world usability.
Sadly they’re going to lose all their money or, even worse, find a way to pay back the VC.
In a Fraud case, you deliberately set out to take other people’s money, illegally, from the offset.
I don’t think he did that. I think his intentions were honest but he got too cocky by providing loans and overspending. However, I feel that he thought he was smart enough to make it all back and make good, like Nick Leeson.
I don’t think he set out to be a crook. I think he set out to be extremely wealthy, thought he was smarter than he was, then couldn’t cope when things started to collapse.
It’s different from setting out to craft a scheme to rob people.
This will be a tough one to fix. There must be millions upon millions of embedded systems out there with 16-bit epoch burned in.
They’ll all be much tougher to find than “YEAR PIC(99)” in COBOL was.
Y2K wasn’t a problem because thousands upon thousands of programmers worked on it well in advance (including myself) we had source code and plenty of static analysis tools, often homegrown.
The 2038 bugs are already out there…in the wild…their source code nothing but a distant dream.

So my mother recently bought an ET-2800, By HP we had an HP printer before and we got a new one because the old one would not work with my sister’s Windows 11 Laptop. So I had to set it up for my mother, the manual said you can use it without the app. But there was no way to physically do that. Anyway, I downloaded the app on...
I 100% agree with this. Sadly, rule #3 applies to me (my job involves dealing with banks and lawyers).
I have had two HP inkjet printers which were unmitigated dogshit. Money-grabbing, thrown together pieces of shit. You get more types of jams than at a craft jam shop.
Five years ago, moved to a Brother laser printer. Little difference in purchase cost. AND IT NEVER FAILS.
I’m now on my second (dropped first one downstairs when moving house) and it is just as reliable.
Each to their own, but for me: Brother Laser Printer every time.
I’m still with Brother. Dropped my last 6 year old Brother (printer not sibling) down the stairs, and replaced it with the updated model. No fuss, no jams, respectable use of toner. Easy WiFi setup (even easier if you know how to allocate it a static IP in router DHCP settings).
Would still recommend, still a Brand Loyal customer.
First ever post, so I hope this is structured OK and hello to all fellow Lemmy migrants! Anyway, here’s my question: is there a UK News community? I’ve found world news and of course CasualUK, but it’d be great to have a community focused on genuinely important headlines of the days with a focus on my home nation. Am I...
As a Boost user, would I be able to access the alternate instance? I’m assuming (hoping) that the answer will be “yes”, but haven’t needed to do that yet.
Muse are Radiohead + actual musical knowledge and multi-instrument talent.
Muse make me want to bang my nut off with joy. Radiohead, not so much.
Some people play music as they commit suicide. It’d be interesting to see if there is any correlation between the two.
As soon as I hear the opening bars of “Creep” I find myself involuntarily making nooses and looking round the room for something that could take my weight.
Of course I meant “head” when I said “nut” as I guess you already knew.
Nevertheless the only wank I’d get off a Radiohead song would be a crywank. I don’t doubt or challenge their creative skills. I just find my life force ebbing away to their whining, dreary songs. I know they speak right into some people’s souls, but not mine.
Also, I’d be willing to put down a wager that there are more Radiohead tribute acts than Muse tribute acts because Radiohead are easier to emulate because they aren’t as good.
You’ll find fewer people able to play confidently on a full grand piano, then leap away from it, pick up a Manson Signature and start making it scream like a banshee.
(The Dutch tribute called “Musest” are an exception, their frontman nails it.)
I just don’t like Radiohead, sorry. I recognize that this won’t be popular but so be it. I think we’re both smart enough to know that arguing about music won’t result in any minds being charged, but I’ll die on this hill if need be.
The first look at the BBC Jimmy Saville series starring Steve Coogan. Who looks to have absolutely nailed it to a spooky degree. However, who is going to watch it?
Honestly, I think it’s an important watch; especially for blokes - who may be more inclined to look the other way and so need education to stand up and intervene.
Serious kudos to Coogan for having the courage to take on the role though. Some of the scenes don’t hold back and we all know that there are many people in the world who attribute acts to the actor.

I wonder what Lemmings are thinking of this device. I admire the innovation but just don’t see how this would be used in practice outside of memes.

What UI design trend do you hate the most?
I personally hate rounded corners and shadows added everywhere. Makes most things look crappy and smudged.
For in-car headbanging, Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" is inferior to Muse's "Knights of Cydonia"
You heard me. In particular the end bits
