SocialMediaRefugee,

How would I know what people’s wordle scores are then?

Roku lays off 300 workers and removes streaming content to save money (www.engadget.com)

Roku looks to be seriously tightening its pursestrings. The company’s laying off a full ten percent of its workforce, over 300 employees, in addition to a conducting a number of other cost-cutting measures, as reported by Variety. These job cuts are just the beginning, as Roku’s also removing streaming content, consolidating...

SocialMediaRefugee,

You hear this a lot when personal wealth is discussed, “But his wealth isn’t real, it is in the business!” This shows that the wealth is real.

It amuses me when a company will go on about how they need to let people go and cut costs but then they piss away millions on a handful of people. The real issue is that they need to cut costs to keep pissing away money on a few people.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Wow. That is insane. You better be god’s gift to business brilliance to justify that.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Like those slimy venture capital groups that take over declining businesses and instead of getting them back on their feet take out tons of loans against them, pocket the cash, then sell off the parts that still work and throw the rest (and the employees) away?

How Much Spying do We as a Society Wish to Allow? (www.youtube.com)

Almost everything based in technology spies on everyone now a days and most people are alright with it. I don’t understand why people are okay knowing this spying exists. Louis Rossman does a great job here showing us the disgusting tactics used by big corporations to gaslight people into believing them over what these...

SocialMediaRefugee,

Remember there is a difference between spying and monitoring based on consent. If I ask the police to put up security cameras on my street due to crime that is monitoring, if someone hides a camera in a tree and aims it at my house that is spying.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Which would make money launders and scammers very happy

SocialMediaRefugee,

You want the FBI to be transparent when they frequently have to investigate criminals on the lowdown to get them to expose themselves?

SocialMediaRefugee,

It isn’t so much a matter of secrecy as a lack of oversight. If they have a shitty contract awarding system it isn’t secret just that no one is watching it.

SocialMediaRefugee,

People are choosing to sit in apple’s garden though. They like the seamlessness of their products even if they are being gouged paying for them. Apple enforces their walls with things like, for instance, not letting android phones communicate using their messaging app so kids using android phones are the odd man out in their groups and are pressured to switch to iphones.

Standards are great as long as development isn’t blocked at the same time. Backwards compatibility becomes an anchor that drags behind you after a while. Industries will generally agree on a standard (like shipping containers) when they realize that a lack of one is holding their industry back as a whole and they know that everyone will use it (no cheating!).

SocialMediaRefugee,

The consumed star is no longer a gravitationally bound object, it is torn apart by tidal forces. She says the disk is supposedly unstable and half should disperse within hours and the rest within a month or so, so this delay is odd.

There is no way to return across the event horizon. You’d have to go faster than light and all timelines lead to the singularity inside the EH.

There is no such massive reservoir of unstable isotopes in stars and even if there was it wouldn’t all decay in a single event.

SocialMediaRefugee,

I wonder how they know it is the same material being ejected as they saw initially.

SocialMediaRefugee,

They became the equivalent to automated customer service lines. Nothing but bots with no humans available to address concerns. Any attempt to contact a mod generally resulted in an arrogant reply.

SocialMediaRefugee,

The purpose of reddit is to keep people engaged while seeing ads. That’s it.

SocialMediaRefugee, (edited )

They could point at our death penalty also

SocialMediaRefugee,

Don’t make us read!

SocialMediaRefugee,

It looks like he posted under his own name and was arrested last year. Guess they are getting nervous about their rule there.

www.cnn.com/2023/08/31/middleeast/…/index.html

SocialMediaRefugee,

I remember during the Arab Spring when everyone was saying how great twitter was and how it was fueling the revolts

SocialMediaRefugee,

Sort of like what ISIS did

SocialMediaRefugee,

Naaah, the subtlies of history require thinking

SocialMediaRefugee,

So leave it up because these weren’t Nazis

SocialMediaRefugee,

I’m sure your ancestors at some point did bad things…

Why is everyone so giddy about the flooding thay happened at burning man?

Social media seems to be laughing its ass off about this tragedy, is it because the folks at burning man are perceived as frivolous hippies or something? Everyone I’ve ever met who was a regular burning man attendee has been a solid human being with strong morals, personally and financially responsible, a career. Upstanding...

SocialMediaRefugee,

Reminds me of the hippy drum circle episode of south park where they all get stoned and listen to jam bands and declare they are changing the world.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Because they love the smell of their own farts?

SocialMediaRefugee,

They can pull vi from my cold, dead hands

SocialMediaRefugee,

I use textpad for helping with coding and note keeping. No goddamn text formatting, just plain ascii with windows or unix line endings. Quick and easy macros, etc.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Who would think an old lake bed in the middle of a flash flood prone desert might be an issue

SocialMediaRefugee,

I look at them the way Voltaire looked at going to church. To paraphrase (going from memory here), “If heaven exists then by going to church every Sunday I’ve saved my soul, if it doesn’t then I’ve only lost a few hours every Sunday.” Multivitamins are cheap enough that I can take them on a “just in case” condition.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Just don’t take a lot or you can royally fuck up your blood calcium levels.

SocialMediaRefugee,

A woman at work gave us all big bottles of vit D during the pandemic. I think it should last me until 2045.

SocialMediaRefugee,

WTF

That is like teaching fire safety by pouring gasoline on someone and waving a lit match.

SocialMediaRefugee, (edited )

It is too easy to get a driver’s license in the US and sure is hell way too easy to get a gun. Some people can’t be trusted with a toothbrush.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Which a certain political party and a certain organization will defend under any circumstance.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Yup, sounds like she was trying to scare the girl. She was mad at the kids and wacking them before this. Jackass didn’t even check to see if there was a round in the chamber not that they should be aiming guns at people and pulling the trigger.

I wonder if there were powder burns and a muzzle imprint on the kid, that would show if the gun was pressed against her. I wouldn’t trust anything they say at this point anyway.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Ummm, forbidden pie filling

SocialMediaRefugee,

I remember reading about a geologist who was standing on what he thought was solidified lava until he realized he had slowly moved and the bottoms of his boots were melting.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Dermatologists hate him!

SocialMediaRefugee,

He figured out what was happening pretty quickly

SocialMediaRefugee, (edited )

Went to reddit to see what the top posts were. Not much has changed.

“I kicked a puppy. AITA?”

“Gang of teens beat up an elderly homeless guy. Not ragebait.”

“What are your favorite dating tips? Help me write my fluff article.”

SocialMediaRefugee,

Bingo. People forget that rules and laws are always double edged and can be used against you.

More dog owners are questioning vaccines like rabies after COVID (www.pressherald.com)

More than half of U.S. dog owners expressed concerns about vaccinating their dogs, including against rabies, according to a new study published Saturday in the journal Vaccine. The study comes as anti-vaccine sentiments among humans have exploded in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic....

SocialMediaRefugee,

We are starting to regress to a pre Louis Pasteur point now

SocialMediaRefugee,

For example, with a can of diet soft drink containing 200 or 300 mg of aspartame, an adult weighing 70kg would need to consume more than 9–14 cans per day to exceed the acceptable daily intake, assuming no other intake from other food sources.

You’d be running to the bathroom every 5 minutes too

SocialMediaRefugee,

If he had stopped after 9-11 he could still be the hero mayor today.

SocialMediaRefugee,

Reminds me of the AIDs ribbon episode of Seinfeld. “Who!? Who won’t wear the ribbon!?”

SocialMediaRefugee,

All he had to do was not try to overthrow an election

SocialMediaRefugee,

More likely she knows her supporters will see it and this is to appeal to them

SocialMediaRefugee,

I will say corporate landlords need to kept on short leashes

SocialMediaRefugee,

You assume that they are all overcharging wildly and that all maintenance is trivial. Mortgages are an actual thing, go buy some property and find out. People rent out property to make a profit, not out of love. Also, living in a home or apt you pay for isn’t a “privilege” anymore than the food I buy is.

unbelievably derivative and completely incompetent

You had me thinking you wanted to make an intelligent point until you broke out the shitpost. You got me!
