Twitter is absolutely the short term, immediate “blood in the water” target. It’s not a coincidence that Threads is using ActivityPub though, it was a very calculated move.

Mastodon and the fediverse at large are the long term targets, Meta knowz they can’t destroy them entirely(thanks, FOSS and decentralization!), but they don’t have to. The thing some people miss when hearing about EEE is you don’t need to fully eliminate competition for it to be considered “extinguished”. Your competition can still be 100% functional and usable, but if they have 1% market share to your 99%, they’re effectively extinguished and you’ll be the leading influence on that market.

Probably. Reminds me a lot of the guys back in HS who would be super women positive and “feminist” when girls were in earshot, but say horrendously awful shit when it was “just us guys”(I wasn’t friends with them either, they just thought it was ok to say around guys in general), up to and including rape apologia in at least one instance. All asshole trump supporters now last I knew.

And they wondered why 90% of my friends in HS were girls.

I think about contacting my HS best friend all the fucking time. Never have tho. I was an awful friend after we left school tbh, I was never the one reaching out first.

Beyond the fear of rejection, the biggest thing stopping me is I still have nothing to offer as a friend. I never reached out because I never have anything I want to talk about, and I don’t have anything to talk about because I don’t do anything. I can barely afford gas to leave the house, let alone interesting things to do once I’m out. Catching up on what I’ve been up to would seriously take like 30 minutes, and like half of that would be explaining all the deaths in my family in the last few years

In some of the music communities I’m in the content creators are already telling their userbase to go follow them on threads. Nope, not really. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found a really old reddit thread with links I wanna check out only for them to be dead. With the services reddit rely on for content going down, this is only going to accelerate.
