Political views: far left economics (socialism), conservative/traditional social views. I'm an ex-atheist, turned christian gnostic. I'm happy to chat. No hate, just pursuit of truth and proper living.

Hobbies/Interests: weebshit (anime/manga/japan), video games, romhacking, ai/tech, girly cute pink stuff, politics/religion is fun. I like the occult and conspiracy stuff too.

yeah someone shared that with me just recently. it's really nice since on my laptop I'd always use the twitter emoji picker, or the discord emoji shortcodes (I prefer the latter, honestly). but on kbin and other sites there's no emoji picker or shortcodes so I was kinda stuck lol.

boost is "retweet" or "reshare". upvote is 'like'.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

My understanding is your "subscribed" feed shows stuff from people you follow as well as the magazines you're subscribed to. Mastodon users' posts typically end up in the microblog section which can be found here. whereas kbin/lemmy users often posts threads which can be found here. It's mixed in with the magazines you subscribe to. I don't think there's a way to just get the followed users without the magazines you're subscribed to.

you can use yuzu without owning a switch if you pirate the keys lol.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

yuzu requires keys which you're supposed to officially dump from your own console. you can just pirate them.

downvoting for disagreement. people on reddit treat upvotes/downvotes as agree/disagree, when they really should be used to promote thoughtful and good content, not necessarily what you agree with. If you think someone is participating in a thread properly, and promoting and inviting discussion and making the place better (even if you disagree with them) you should upvote instead.

reddit all too often let "lazy" comments float to the top because they were agreeable with the masses, but low effort.

retrogamedev - a group/resource for retro game (and software) developers

As a long time developer of games for retro platforms (mainly MS-DOS), I thought it would be cool to have a space where other developers of games and software for retro platforms (computers, consoles and handhelds) could show off their projects, ask questions or get help with their projects. Note that the group mainly focuses on...

YSK - X percent of Y is equal to Y percent of X. So, if you want to find out what 7% of 50 is, you could instead find out what 50% of 7 is, which is 3.5. This means that 7% of 50 is also equal to 3.5.

Why YSK: It helps when calculating percentages. If you want to find out what 2% of 20 is, do 20% of 2 instead and you’ll get 0.4. So, 2% of 20 also equals 0.4....

damn all these good tips for doing quick percentage math @.@

personally I just want communities full of stuff that I like and that I'm interested in. as long as it's comfy and I'm getting some good chats, news, and content, I don't really care if it's "like reddit" or not.

@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

tbh the keys are probably fake

quacks welcome to chat too? or no?

Should we be cross-posting to equivalent communities between instances? (kbin.social)

Title. I'm wondering what's everyone's take on this. On the one hand it'd mean seeing multiples of one post if you're subscribed to equivalent communities between communities. On the other hand, right now I think a big worry is this momentum we have dying out due to lack of content....

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I think it'd be nice to have a thing for communities/magazines to be discovered. I feel like there's way more people on lemmy, so our kbin magazines get ignored by a lot of lemmy people. is there a way to share it with them and make it more discoverable?

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I'll definitely post some communities there :) I think it's easy enough to discover lemmy communities, I just feel that kbin magazines ain't getting as much love haha.

Can someone explain how this moderation action works? A lemmy.ml user removed a post from a partizle.com user from a kbin.social magazine. (kbin.social)

relevant magazine is /m/RedditMigration here on kbin.social. You can see it's the one and only report in the modlog yet the user who removed the comment is not listed in the moderators list, is not even a kbin.social user, and did not remove a lemmy.ml comment. Yet, it was removed for me as a kbin.social user....

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

yeah they'd have to be an admin of partizle.com yeah? or be a moderator of the kbin magazine? that's why it's odd. perhaps the lemmy.ml admins can moderate every lemmy instance?

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

So I just checked on lemmy.world and the comment is not removed there like it is here on kbin. yet, kbin is the hosting instance of the community. if kbin thinks it's removed, then surely that removal should be sent out to others who look at it?

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

The best troll would be to just openly allow actual direct link piracy on /r/piracy. if reddit bans /r/piracy, then it functionally re-privates the sub (the thing they wanted to avoid). And if they allow it, then it's a bastion of actual piracy. win-win!

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I like the gamecube controller the best for using. though because I'm a weirdo who likes the weirdest stuff, I'm super fond of the n64 controller.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

it'd be nice if you could write up a short thing on your philosophy for federating/defederating/content. many of us would like to simply have full federation and curate content ourselves, though it's understandable that moderation needs to happen in some cases.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

if this is indeed the case, then this is really the only valid reason to defederate. if it's literally illegal to federate, then it's understandable what must be done. otherwise? no.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

If something is truly harmful it should be illegal. and if it is illegal, it's grounds to defederate. if something is not illegal and there's no need to make it illegal, then it's fine.

actual child porn is something that causes harm, and thus should be illegal, and thus grounds for defederation.

loli/shota are not child porn. these are words that apply to adults. if loli/shota content OF ADULTS is indeed banned in poland, and kbin is in poland and subject to those laws, then it's understandable that defederation has to occur.

Something tells me though, that adult loli/shota content isn't actually banned in poland. anti loli idiots have been trying to declare it's cp for years now and they're just wrong.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

Reddit: "open up so we can ban you!"

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

as a kbinaut, may I ask why everyone feels it's important to block lemmygrad? here on kbin we're still federated with them and things seem fine?

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

this was my experience as well. I visited /r/redditalternatives, saw someone mention kbin, I checked it out and it felt right. So here I am.

The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance. (kbin.social)

So.. I get this on some of my subscribed communities on other instances. I get some of the content, but nowhere near all. Is there a ranking which preferences synching of other instances communities? The more popular ones never seem to have this problem.. Or is there just 'lag' between instances and it's something that will have...

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I think it's just lag. there's a lot of content to sync so I imagine it can take a while in some cases.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

we're not talking about "the first time" though. It'll be something like, I visit a magazine/community and there'll be some posts, but the most recent one will be 4 hours ago. I then look at the magazine/community on the original host and it's most recent stuff was 10 minutes ago, not 4 hours.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

something like torrentz

I feel like I'm the only person who used/remembers that site lol. I'll definitely have to check out qbittorrent now.

also I was just informed about https://therarbg.com/

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

yikes. but I'll still probably use them if they have good uploads

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

My secret is to have an ISP that is fine with piracy lmao.

I get all my movies from yts.mx though and haven't had issues. I also used rarbg but rip they're dead now.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

oh nice. I'm guessing not the same team, but same spirit? like how the original yts are gone?

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

the ml in lemmy.ml stands for Marxist-Leninist...

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

it was more of a joke but... yeah I think that might actually have been the intent lol

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

just an FYI, despite you seeing their comment, they can't see yours.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

Yes. Think of it like blocking someone. beehaw defederated from sh.itjust.works so they can't see anything from sh.itjust.works. not comments, not threads, not communities. 100% blocked. whereas the reverse isn't true. you're not able to get communities or content from beehaw (because they blocked and aren't sending it to you), but their comments and threads elsewhere in the fediverse are still shared with you. This thread is hosted on lemmy.ml, so everyone federated with lemmy.ml can see it and interact with it; this is why you can see the beehaw user's comment.

However, since beehaw defederated with sh.itjust.works, your reply remains unseen by them. sh.itjust.works could mutually defederate/block beehaw and you wouldn't see the comment. but that's up to your instance whether you wanna do that or not.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

I'm just gonna go out on a limb and ruffle some feathers and say it's node.js

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

beehaw.org blocked lemmy.world. which works like you'd expect blocking someone would work. they can't interact with each other, can't participate in each other's communities, etc.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

lemmy.world still "has" content from beehaw before the block happened. you can still see it and interact with it, but anything you do on beehaw communities that you have copies of won't get synced to beehaw, and thus can't be seen by anyone else on the fediverse.

you shouldn't be getting new posts from beehaw at all, other than comments inside of non-beehaw communities (such as in a kbin magazine where a beehaw user comments).

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

yeah that's definitely odd. I wonder if lemmy.world is getting the content from a different federated instance?

can you post in the thread? and if so, can beehaw users respond to you? I wonder what's up...

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

you left reddit because 3rd party apps were being killed off.

I left reddit because reddit sucks and I've been looking for an alternative for a long while now.

We are not the same.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

my post is in the format of a meme, it's not supposed to be taken seriously. but yeah it's pretty ironic.

Otome-chan,
@Otome-chan@kbin.social avatar

so you can tell where something is coming from by checking the full @/name. you can see this in the sidebar for magazines, or hovering over someone's name to see for the users. there's userscripts to show it automatically and I think it's planned to have an official option to do so.

What makes federated threads show up here on kbin?

By default, we can access every other federated instance. However, it might not show up if someone isn't subscribed to the person or magazine. Threads for magazines should be 100% in sync across instances (though sometimes things are a bit finnicky due to the influx of users).

Are there any that don't?

Content from other instances won't show up here if:

  1. it's not part of what the collective kbinauts have subscribed to (if we subscribe to another instance's magazine, it pulls in that content for everyone here.)
  2. if another instance decides to block or "defederate" with us. as of now I think every instance is federating with kbin.social so this shouldn't be an issue.
  3. if you mark that you don't wish to see federated content. this will only show you stuff from kbin.social.
