Wow great collection! Do you have a favourite console and/or game?

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Gotta be B, right? But then if the victims had no momentum… ah this hurts my brain

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

But if the door is coming at you fast, isn’t the ‘room’ too?

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Interesting! There isn’t much of a story to Slime Rancher, so I could see a standalone film, free to do its own thing and set it that universe being fun.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Very true! A really interesting world/backdrop to set a film in. I’m optimistic

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I played TP not that long ago (I had it on Wii, but this was my first time actually finishing it). I agree that it’s quite an easy game, but it was enjoyable throughout. The items were nicely varied and most of the dungeon puzzles were clever. The weirdness of the world reminded me a lot of Ocarina of Time. I’ve actually never played Majora’s Mask so I should give that a go sometime! If you’re on Steam Deck, I’ve heard a good option is patching the N64 version with HD textures (which may require a Windows system initially).

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

If you’re going to invest money into something, do your research first. How anyone thought these would be a good investment is beyond me! More money than sense.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve read the Neal Stephenson books you mentioned and loved them but I wonder if they’re really dystopian? Injustice is certainly a big part of those worlds but I don’t find them as bleak and hopeless as some other truly dystopian novels I’ve read. He seems to explore how new technologies could completely change our societies, but they always feel like worlds that are on the cusp of something new (rather than allowing technology to back themselves into a corner with no hope of improvement).

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Yes that’s right. The default ones are extremely weak!

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

How difficult would it be create a driver like that? Would someone with virtually no coding experience have any chance?

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Ah, I would definitely struggle then! I guess my most realistic options would either be to take apart the Deck and replacing the existing motor with a stronger one, or hope that someone smarter than me has a similar idea and can code a driver

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Thanks for this info. I think a hardware mod and/or software coding for this would be beyond my understanding.

Something externally plug and play would be amazing, but I doubt such a product exists.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Yes, that is exactly what I want xD

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

This may actually be the perfect solution! Internal vibration. Imagine playing Forza and feeling your insides jiggle as you accelerate through a corner. Possibly the closest thing to actually driving a car.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

*buttlog?

Usually would it be a case of game devs integrating buttplug.io support?

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Thanks for the idea! I’ll look into this. Could be useful from a more generic perspective (i.e. just some kind of bluetooth vibration device that could attach to the Deck rather than a sex toy).

Sex toy genuinely would be great though lmao

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve heard they’re good for chess too

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Great info! I did wonder if something like that would be possible. Will look into this, thanks

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Basically any indies or games that have been ported to Switch, you’re gonna get better performance on the Deck.

There are a few games like Okami which do neat things with the joycons and go on sale often enough that I can justify buying them on the Switch.

I still get the occasional Nintendo exclusive on my Switch for the sake of convenience. I’m too lazy to try and emulate TOTK on the Deck for example.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Thanks, just laughed out loud at work reading this

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I can’t tell if this is art or vandalism

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Yes I think you’re right

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I love how it looks like they’ve spontaneously decided to fuck in the middle of the forest. The hair pulling is also very hot!

Looking for comeuppance heavy series

Loved the Embers of Illeniel series and I’m really digging where Phil Tucker’s Immortal Great Souls series is going, and I’m looking for more. I like the progression elements of a weak/underpowered MC growing into a powerhouse over the course of the story, and I REALLY like said powerhouse using that strength to pay back...

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

+1 to both of these. The Red Rising series is great and the Count of Monte Cristo is a long but extremely satisfying tale of revenge.

This is a really difficult one for me. I do 100% agree that adult classics should remain as they are, and we should view these through the lens of historical context. Keeping those classics as they are allows us to analyse them and see how views have changed - sometimes we need to know how bad things were so we can learn from our mistakes. But I think it’s also important that for young adults, these works should be studied in a classroom so there’s someone there to explain the uncomfortable parts.

The difficulty comes with books aimed at very young audiences, like Roald Dahl novels. Kids may not always have the necessary support or understanding of the context. So I’m inclined to agree with Wilson here with regards to kids books, but it’s a bit of a grey area for me.

*Her 2005 novel is pretty worrying though. As the other commenter mentioned, the subject matter was inappropriate even at the time. It doesn’t sound like the book tackles the consequences of what happens either.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I like the concept of these phones, but I think it’s still a few years off being viable. Half the price and improve the battery, then I’ll be interested.

Thanks for confirming it works! The video seems comprehensive :)

Is Vortex a mod loader? Edit: ah yeah I think I’ve got my head around it now. Check out my other comment for a link to set up ModOrganizer2 as an alternative

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Thank you, this is very insightful! I believe the Steam Deck has 1GB of VRAM assigned by default - would that be sufficient for most purposes?

Most guides for the Steam Deck seem to focus on installing Vortex. If I understand correctly, Vortex has it’s own ‘collections’ (i.e. modpacks) whereas Wabbajack modlists are installed using the alternative program ModOrganizer2. Speaking of Wabbajack, I did find this specific guide for Linux/Steam Deck. The Dragonborn modpack in particular sounds interesting…

As another alternative, you can also install mods using the built in mod manager? I’m guessing that is a lot more limited.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I know you can turn up the VRAM to 4GB if you like. When I eventually give the modpack a try, I’ll see how I get on with the default first.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Thanks for the heads up with the downloads folder - that definitely would have caught me out.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

What do the l u m p s at the front do?

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Ohh I see. Second question… why does it need that many headlights?!

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t know much about rally driving but that makes sense, thanks

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I haven’t played any TOTK in a few weeks - I’ve been distracted by other games! But I should probably play some more. Besides that I’ve been enjoying 13 Sentinels, Battlebit and a bit of Minecraft on the side.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

13 Sentinels is really great so far! The animations are beautiful. There are some slightly cringey anime tropes/fanservice at points but it’s not too bad. After the introduction the game lets you choose whether you’d prefer to advance the plot or play the Fire Emblem-esque battles. Having this choice is nice - sometimes I just want to relax with the visual novel side for example.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

That’s a nice idea actually, and it actually gets you to consider your thoughts on a game. Quite often I’ll think back to a game I’ve played before and I can’t remember exactly what it was that I liked/disliked about it - or at the very least I’d struggle to put it into words. Instead I just have a general sense of the ‘feeling’ of that game. Considering the game immediately after finishing it would solidify things in your memory and give you a greater appreciation of it. That in turn may encourage you to play more games in your backlog that you’d disregarded previously.

Let me mention a couple of games I’ve finished recently:

Return of the Obra Dinn definitely stands out as one of the most unique games I’ve played. Clouds, explosions and all the little details of the ship rendered in that dithered pixel art style immediately drew me in. And somehow the game makes the admin of identifying and filling out a book of crew members extremely rewarding. There were some moments near the end of the game where I hit a wall - and it’s good to have a friend who’s completed the game if you want some hints. But for the most part you could make logical claims about each character. Coupled with the amazing voice acting and soundtrack, this is an extremely satisfying and intelligently designed game.

It’s a game that completely flew past me when it released, but I’d subsequently heard great things about Dragon’s Dogma. And having played it, I can see why a lot of people recommend it. The combat feels like Monster Hunter meets Dark Souls - very fluid and responsive, and I love the way you can hire other player’s pawns with varying levels of expertise to assist you. Whilst I did enjoy my time playing this one, it did feel like a very empty world. Throughout the story, I was gearing up for the game to lead me to the next big city but that never happened. The ending was actually very interesting, but it felt like it was missing a larger second act which never happened. I hope that the sequel can make the open world a bit more lively.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

Yes I did eventually get to the end. I recommend finishing it - if you get really stuck try a hint website like this. I think that can make the experience a bit more enjoyable, as a few of the clues are really obscure.

Along these lines, I think my favourite puzzle game of all time has to be The Witness. Have you played that?

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve actually not played any of the Myst games! But I did buy the collection on Humble Bundle recently, so I look forward to giving them a go :)

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

I think people are being unnecessarily harsh in response to your comment. I get what you mean - it must be frustrating to writers to see their work reduced to a few key points that remove it from the greater context.

I don’t think you’re being snobby in saying that.

On the other hand, I don’t think summaries are a bad thing. On the whole it’ll encourage more people to give the book a try. Anyone that’s put off by the summary probably wouldn’t have read the book in the first place, and at least it gives them some basic background.

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

No you’re not too late - thanks for the suggestion! That does look like it would pair perfectly with monsteras.

Soundcore earbuds microphone on Steam Deck

Hi all, I have an interesting issue that I’m hoping can be solved. I have a pair of Anker Soundcore A40 earbuds and they connect fine to the Deck. However the Deck doesn’t pick up on the microphone input at all - I’ve had a look under input devices and it fails to show up. Is there anything I can do (packages, drivers etc)...

OmegaMouse,
@OmegaMouse@feddit.uk avatar

That’s odd! Do other bluetooth devices work ok?
