🚨 A new study finds that children who survive firearm injuries face significantly greater risks of hospitalization and emergency and outpatient visits in the year after injury versus their non-injured peers.

Ending child gun injuries could save $62.9 million in health costs, the study authors conclude.

Fortunately, I didn't have that problem. My mother loved me unconditionally regardless of my age and how much I f*cked up. 😍

Other people, not so much. 🤷‍♂️

💭 Thoughts on this complicated topic?

At least 29 states have policies restricting or eliminating exclusionary discipline, and a 2016 national survey found that 17,000 3- and 4-year-olds had been expelled in the previous year, Jenny Gold reports.

Ah! Two clarifications are in order, then.

The article is talking about 4 year olds (and, yes, 3 year olds, too).

While the article often uses the term preschool, the law is for "child care centers." At age 3 (and often at 4) the institution might be called "preschool" but tends to look and function like daycare. I've seen "daycares" that start worksheets at age 3 (eww). The lines btwn daycare/preschool aren't always crisp, but effects of suspension are.

@DataGeekB Four year olds are another story. They mostly need behavior prep before starting school. Three year olds should not be in Pre-K. @KidsData @edutooters

🤸🏼 Oh, happy (play) day! California students in kindergarten through 8th grade will get mandatory 30-minute recess under a new state law.

The new law will also prohibit educators from withholding #recess as a form of punishment, Brian Watt reports for KQED.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. The prevalence of bullying in California schools is staggering: In a recent survey, more than 1 in 4 students in 7th, 9th, and 11th grades said they'd been bullied or harassed at school in the previous year. More than 1 in 5 said they'd been cyberbullied by fellow students.

Bullying is a public health issue, with far-reaching implications. In addition to the risk of physical injury, victims of bullying are at risk for depression, anxiety, suicidal behavior, physical health problems, substance abuse into adulthood, low academic achievement, and poor social and school adjustment.

Prevention requires data. Get more here:

Popular discussion of the harm caused by guns focuses on deaths, overlooking non-fatal injuries. But for every kid in the U.S. who dies from a shooting, 2 more are treated for bodily harm.

In a study led by Ann Cheney at UC Riverside, caregivers said the Salton Sea environment is toxic to children's health.

Sulfuric smells, dust storms, chemicals, and fires in the area contribute to chronic health conditions among kids, including asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia, they reported.

Cheney and her team engaged with 36 people via focus groups or one-on-one interviews. Participants lived in the northern part of the Salton Sea and were Latinx and Indigenous Mexican caregivers of children with asthma and respiratory problems. The study was conducted from fall 2019 to spring 2021.

Since the pandemic, the number of California students who are chronically absent from school has surged to 1.8 million, says a new study by Thomas Dee at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.

Rates of chronic absenteeism jumped to 30% in 2021-2022, from 12% in the school year before the pandemic. Chronic absenteeism was defined as missing at least 10% of the school year.
