🚨 A new study finds that children who survive firearm injuries face significantly greater risks of hospitalization and emergency and outpatient visits in the year after injury versus their non-injured peers.

Ending child gun injuries could save $62.9 million in health costs, the study authors conclude.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. The prevalence of bullying in California schools is staggering: In a recent survey, more than 1 in 4 students in 7th, 9th, and 11th grades said they'd been bullied or harassed at school in the previous year. More than 1 in 5 said they'd been cyberbullied by fellow students.

Bullying is a public health issue, with far-reaching implications. In addition to the risk of physical injury, victims of bullying are at risk for depression, anxiety, suicidal behavior, physical health problems, substance abuse into adulthood, low academic achievement, and poor social and school adjustment.

Last week California's governor signed into law a first-in-the-nation state excise tax on sales of firearms and ammunition, aimed at raising funds to prevent gun violence in California schools and elsewhere.

📝 Recent research from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health links the 2021 Child Tax Credit expansion to significant improvements in adult mental health.

Among the lowest-income adults, anxiety symptoms improved by more than 13% and depressive symptoms improved by more than 9%, finds a study by Akansha Batra, Kaitlyn Jackson, and Rita Hamad.

In a study led by Ann Cheney at UC Riverside, caregivers said the Salton Sea environment is toxic to children's health.

Sulfuric smells, dust storms, chemicals, and fires in the area contribute to chronic health conditions among kids, including asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia, they reported.

Cheney and her team engaged with 36 people via focus groups or one-on-one interviews. Participants lived in the northern part of the Salton Sea and were Latinx and Indigenous Mexican caregivers of children with asthma and respiratory problems. The study was conducted from fall 2019 to spring 2021.

Since the pandemic, the number of California students who are chronically absent from school has surged to 1.8 million, says a new study by Thomas Dee at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.

Rates of chronic absenteeism jumped to 30% in 2021-2022, from 12% in the school year before the pandemic. Chronic absenteeism was defined as missing at least 10% of the school year.
