MA by way of CA, which I know is backwards. Once a literacy researcher, now a reading specialist (so career track also kinda backwards). Interests include salvaging/creating #democracy, local activism, dark humor, clever silliness, and watching way too much TV.
No fascists, trolls or bros need apply, but otherwise I love different perspectives and ideas!

I really enjoyed the book. An android with human-like features is nothing new in sci-fi, but I really liked this version. The main character android is very likeable.

I agree that the Murderbot universe gets fleshed out as the series proceeds. I also find it interesting that the light touch and humor of the books runs parallel to Murderbot’s anxiety/PTSD and the many very heavy moments and themes. I’m interested in where Wells is taking the series in the next book (out next month! 🙂)

Oh, I love this series. Book 2 may be my favorite (ART is the best). Or maybe the more recent full length novel. Or the murder mystery Sam Spade-esque stand alone novella (set just before the longer novel). So hard to pick!

There was a poll that stated—Rowling’s opening line in the HP series is one of best in the world. Someone posted about how there are a bunch of other opening statements that are better.

Here’s one of my personal favorites, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez (English translated):
“It is inevitable. The scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.”

What are some of your favorite opening lines in literature? 😊

Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday. I can’t be sure - Camus, The Outsider

124 was spiteful. Full of baby’s venom - Morrison, Beloved

The story so far: In the beginning, the earth was created. This has made a lot of people angry and is widely regarded as a bad move - Adams, Hitchhiker’s Guide

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die the second time he saved my life - Novik, Deadly Education

I’m pretty much fucked. That’s my considered opinion - Weir, Martian

Thank you! I thought of it bc it’s a much, much more interesting, darker and more nuanced portrayal of a school for students with magic than the HP series. The first paragraph is really what hooked me, more than the first sentence.

I’m not really doing the book justice with this description. If you don’t mind a little YA feel to a novel, it’s a creative, fun, engrossing book of its genre. Worth a shot, maybe

And I just accidentally deleted the post. Ugh. So tired. Time for bed or try again?

If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book - Lemony Snickett, Series of Unfortunate Events

(So many others)

I have a modified version below. Someone else quoted Douglass Adams (someone else with great taste)

Not a novel, but one of my favorite lines in literature:

“I grew up kissing books and bread.” Salman Rushdie from Is Nothing Sacred

Me too! It’s a great story, creative, and super well written

Did you also read Spinning Silver? Very different but I loved that too.

You will love the rest of the series, no lie. There isn’t a weak book in the series. I’ve read them multiple times. And check back in when you get to know ART 🙂

Easily one of my favorite characters. The relationship between Murderbot and ART is gold (mild spoiler: ART is not just in the second book though they take a bit to show up again). So happy you are enjoying the books! I wish I could read them for the first time

Feel free to keep me posted on your reactions as you go. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I love taking any of those books whenever. Love love them. Happy reading!
