I have a tendency to go on long-winded rants fairly often. Maybe cause I'm a pastor's kid 😝, but I admit I get preachy. But it's not, as many tend to assume, because I think I'm always right and everybody should listen to me. It's because I know I see the world differently from others, and my perspective has helped enough people round out their own worldviews ("I've never thought of it like that before" is something I've heard a LOT) that I feel like it's worth sharing.

@Vincarsi @actuallyautistic

Yeah, sometimes I gotta do a rant just to get the thoughts out of my brain, and if I'm lucky, at least get a little validation that other people are angry about the same things...

But even that runs into issues of intersectionality of marginalizations, and further than that, individual life and sociocultural circumstances.

Basically, I'm rapidly moving towards a very social/cultural relativism point of view where there ISN'T any "right way" to view a situation. At best there's the "plurality way" because most of the observers happen to be similar enough in brain structure, social/cultural upbringing, and marginalizations to view the situation in a similar way.

There's not just the "NT Way" and the "ND Way" of viewing a thing, there's an infinite number of ways to view a thing, and none are inherently more "right" or "wrong" than any other. It's why trying to judge based on someone's intent is pointless. There's no way to objectively measure what was correctly intentioned or not.

Why do you need a label?

"Because there is comfort in knowing you are a normal zebra, not a strange horse. Because you can't find community with other zebras if you don't know you belong. And because it is impossible for a zebra to be happy or healthy spending its life feeling like a failed horse.”

q: @omgimautisticaf

Learning the “why” didn’t change me, but finding a community of others like me who I can share things with and learn from has been helpful.

@actuallyautistic

JessTheUnstill,
@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange avatar

I choose to look of it less as taxonomy like horse vs. zebra, and more like data/story tagging, where you can keep adding more tags to get more specific. Sure, not everyone with the same tag will be IDENTICAL, but a lot of your experiences will rhyme with one another, and the more tags you share, the more rhymes you'll find.

I share a lot of Autistic folks. I share a lot with ADHD folks. But I share even MORE with AuDHD folks. Then I share even more than that with trans AuDHD folks. And even more than that with ... etc. etc.

Sometimes it ends up that yeah, I'm an outlier within one specific tag, but when I find people with more tags in common, it's weird how many things in our brains rhyme...

The battle against spam signups to Infosec.exchange continues. At least a hundred so far. And zero spams sent. I suspect the actor here will get annoyed soon and try a ddos next. Time to accelerate that move behind fastly.

I just saw that Am I The Asshole reddit thread where the white girl started going to a black salon because she had extremely curly hair and the black salon was the only one that didn't massacre it. Her white friends straight up gaslit her into believe she was engaging in cultural appropriation and stealing resources from black people. WILD 💀

JessTheUnstill,
@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange avatar

@malwaretech Wha?!? Giving business to a Black salon because they provide a valuable service and specific knowledge about how to care for your type of hair is appropriation? What sort of bananas justification is this! So long as you tip well and aren't a racist jackass, I'm sure every Black stylist and barber is just fine with white customers.

This is your seasonal reminder that all acorns are edible. Some need processing, others do not.

In October, I will do a thread on Southern Live Oak, Quercus virginiana. These don’t need processing but do need to be steamed in their shells to remove the nut. Last year, house moths ate most of mine so they need to be well-sealed and frozen after shelling.

Those look super tasty! Only sorta related, when we lived in a neighborhood with lots of acorn bearing trees, our dog would GORGE herself on acorns every chance she would get. We had to be super careful - not because they're like poisonous, but she would just eat so many - including rotten ones - and then make herself sick 😆

Yes, being a ciso makes me eminently qualified to run a franchise restaurant 🚮

JessTheUnstill,
@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange avatar

@jerry I mean, for many of the companies, the majority of the parent company's profits are made by selling franchises, not from the actual store sales. So really, the only qualification they care about for franchise owners is "do you have money"?

I have bad news everyone. Tonight I am turning infosec.exchange into a private facebook group
/s if not obvious

JessTheUnstill,
@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange avatar

@tinker @jerry Though from what I understand, if the instance defederated with everyone else suddenly, migration wouldn't be automatic or easy. It requires your "from" server to host your redirect pointers for a while for all the rest of the fediverse to learn where to point people to. So you'd end up rebuilding your social graph from scratch again.

JessTheUnstill,
@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange avatar

@jerry @tinker I've been beating the drum that the fediverse needs a way to decouple a user's identity from their instance for several months now. Something like an mx record or a webfinger, such that they can update their "home instance" pointer to a new instance if/when they need to, and all of their followers could pick up the redirect even in the case of adversarial home instance admin behavior. Obviously you'd still lose your post history etc., but you wouldn't lose your social graph so long as your webfinger stayed around.

JessTheUnstill,
@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange avatar

@jerry @tinker
@hrefna did some brainstorming with me last night of various strategies. Frustratingly, I've just not had any brain power to code in my free time in recent months ...
https://hachyderm.io/@hrefna/111095937917707836

JessTheUnstill,
@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange avatar

I mean, for any of these ideas, it's not like the identity service has to be centralized or monolithic - just decoupled. Presumably identity services would be under less pressure to moderate or ban users since they're merely hosting a pointer, not having any particular control over anyone's content.

Hunh, received my first explicit "Die tranny demon" reply on here in a while.

If someone wants to post the fediblock call, feel free. I don't have the spoons to deal with it right now.

Yes, I reported it already and blocked the instance. The instances' public timeline is full of hate speech and abuse.

Life is short. Use the fancy soaps or bath bombs you've been saving for a "special occasion". Drink the good bottle of wine. Burn the decorative candles. That special occasion is today. You made it through everything life has thrown at you and you're still here, god damn it. That's a good reason to celebrate.
