Just wanting to be part of your tribe but findind hard to get an alternative for this. I would like to make payments by with the phone’s NFC as I tend to avoid a physical wallet.
I don’t use my phone for NFC payments, but my bank has an app that can handle nfc payments. You could check to see if your bank has something similair.
Honestly OP, weird keyboard issues, especially on a laptop are very often hardware failures.
As for driver downloading software, Linux works far different from Windows in this sense. Linux drivers usually come packaged with the kernel and are otherwise downloaded through the repository of your relevant distribution, so you don’t need any third party software.
You could boot into the bios and test the keys there. If they still don’t work then its a hardware issue. Do you know how to get into the bios?
Edit: Also OP, if you do have issues in the future, please post them on lemmy.world/c/techsupport as this isn’t really the right community.
press the power button, then mash F2 till you see the bios screen popup.
(Sometimes the bios key is F10 or F12, so if F2 doesn’t work just redo the steps but try those keys instead.)
Once you’re in the bios, you can use the arrow keys to navigate. Assuming the arrow keys work, you can navigate to a a section with the name “security” or something similair.
(If you press the arrow keys and nothing happens, your keyboard is broken.)
Once you are there you should see an option to “set an administrators password”. click on that and press a key that you know doesn’t work. if nothing is inputted into the password field then the keyboard is definently broken.
to exit the password input field simply press esc, and then you can navigate to exit, and select exit discarding changes.
If you got to step 5 and everything worked then it is definently an issue with the OS.
In that case, your keyboard is most likely broken. Perhaps you could still have it fixed under warranty? You can enter the laptop serial number on support.hp.com to check if the warranty is still active.
Screensaver quit working?
I have a box running Kali with the MATE desktop. I just switched to a new wiiiiiide monitor, and my screensaver no longer kicks in, ever.
I have tried refreshing its settings, etc. If I invoke it manually with Super+L it starts. But it never powers off the monitor.
What could cause this? What else might I try to at least isolate the cause?
I think my favorite thing about Lemmy is that it feels like Reddit used to. Less negativity, more engaged users (I think). I know it will be fun to watch Reddit die, but if I put spite aside what I’m really mad at Reddit about is more about what Reddit became and maybe part of that is when the general internet user started...
Tbh the problem with Discord is that its search and indexing functions just suck ass in the first place. I already treat anything posted in Discord as ephemeral information that stops existing once it leaves my view. In that sense i hope lemmy instances for tech support/ troubleshooting take off. Much easier to archive.
