Lol are you like 85 years old?

Open source is a term relating to software. Software is created using code. This isn’t a hard idea to track.

Software as a service is common. Feel free to read up.

I think people assume most attackers are targeting a specific person when in reality they cast a large net and take as much as they can find.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR8SmnVSLCg

Thats why iOS exploits are so valuable because iphones run on such a narrow band that an exploit is likely to work on all iphone users, regardless of model.

Imprint9816,

Depends on your use case.

I know for me, i don’t need all the services unlimited offers.

I created seperate accounts for the services i use as they don’t allow you to bundle only specific services together (ie just mail+ and drive+ together). This ends up saving a few bucks.

Imprint9816,

Lmao how many times are people going to misrepresent the proton email issue

Imprint9816,

Mullvad is the gold standard if you dont need port forwarding.

You may want to look into Filen - I know they have had issues with them not using the best encryption methods. Just remember “lifetime” refers to the life of the service (which they can change at any time) and not your lifetime.

Imprint9816, (edited )

You may want to check out AirVPN - great port forwarding implementation.

Long history of being privacy respecting and completely FOSS but they don’t do audits (which is a super big deal to some and a big reason its not recommended on pg).

Just make sure to use the wireguard client as their own client kind of sucks.

Imprint9816,

A fork has already been created by the other developer - github.com/FossifyX

This is what prompted me to switch to drive+ on proton, had been using google drive with cryptomator.

As others have said, using the cloud should never be your only backup solution.

Privacy benefits of Custom roms

So recently my moto G60 reached the end of life with respect to security updates. That was the reason I was using to prevent myself from switching to a custom rom(actual reason is laziness). This phone has rom support for pixel experience and lineage OS. So my questions are if pixel experience has any privacy advantages when...

Imprint9816, (edited )

Just remember there is a balance between security and privacy that these types of communities forget and typically greatly increase the attack surface of their devices for minimal privacy gains.

This is why, in general, giving special access to your phone with privileged apps (Google Play, Micro G) or severely reducing the security of the phone by rooting it is almost always something you should avoid.

My internal fight over what device to buy

Hello there! This is my problem: I’m going to buy a new smartphone, and I’d really like to degoogle myself as much as possible. The idea would be to buy a device compatible with LineageOS, but… Supported devices are usually older models, and often there are newer devices with better specs for the same price, that does not...

Imprint9816,

Why not just buy a usb-c to sd card reader for $8 on amazon? Wouldn’t it be better to comprimise a bit of convenience then installing a less secure / private rom

Is this VPN comparison breakdown trustworthy?

I’m shopping for a VPN providers, and really struggling to find a detailed and non-biased breakdown of the various options. A number of years ago, I recall finding an extremely detailed VPN comparison spreadsheet that had 30+ columns, which were contained criteria by which the VPNs were judged both quantitatively and...

Imprint9816,

I know OP has stopped updating it but, to me, r/vpntorrents still has the best guide on recommending a vpn provider - www.reddit.com/…/list_of_recommended_vpns_2022/

Privacyguides.org is another good resource.

Imprint9816, (edited )

I think between daiqo and the users at privacyguides the concerns you mention are well accounted for. To me, this from daiqo stood out as why AirVPN ends up being an easy choice for a lot of users.

“Additionally, there are not that many alternatives left. Mullvad is obviously the gold standard and IVPN follows, but both don’t have port-forwarding anymore. OVPN got acquired by Pango. Proton is a good alternative but not so viable for macOS users. There are a bunch of others but you’ll always need to compromise much more than with AirVPN.”

Imprint9816,

A little bummed as I enjoyed the podcast, oh well.

Unsubscribed from the podcast and added the blog to my rss reader.

Imprint9816,

Is it just one guy constantly creating new accounts to make these low effort troll posts? Feels like there have been 3 or 4 this week

Imprint9816,

This, social networks are not private and users should account for that and act accordingly.

I committed to lemmy during the reddit protests and am trying to stick to my word, the lack of quality niche communities is still the hardest adjustment.

Imprint9816,

If you wrote that post and came to the conclusion being privacy oriented was your big issue you got a long road ahead.

Your young and dumb and pretty much all of what you did was weird af and creepy. You will learn. Take the L.

Imprint9816,

At least have the balls to troll on your main account.

Imprint9816,

Same config although I also use nextdns on my phone as I don’t want an outside connection to pihole.

Imprint9816,

I don’t subscribe to the idea that national security and privacy are mutually exclusive. I think its a load of horseshit used to get people to give up their privacy willingly.

Law enforcement and governments have more then enough weapons and tech to do their job without trampling on privacy.

Imprint9816,

Wild that your own text messages could be stored locally on your car but you have no access to the information

What VPN do you use and why?

If you are a pirate VPN is an essential tool. I am trying to ascertain the popularity of various VPNs in piracy community. In this excerise, I will list several Popular VPNs in the comment if you use one of them just upvote that comment and reply the reason. If you don’t find your VPN listed add a comment with just their name....

Imprint9816,

AirVPN - privacy respecting (although their attitude towards audits is a bit off putting). They also had the best port forwarding offer at the time Mullvad announced it was ending its support.

Imprint9816,

I have deleted my reddit a few times. Its not for privacy reasons.

If i feel myself getting to involved I delete my account and take a break.

Imprint9816,

AirVPN user here - would also recommend but would note they have not been audited and it does not seem likely they will be as staff does not seem interested.

They did though disclose a 2015 incident where servers were seized and no info was found. So there is some evidence their no log policy is more then just words although your still only getting their version of the event.

Imprint9816,

Not really. Both offer port forwarding and have real world tests of their no log policy but PIA is chaulk full of controversies. Including being owned by Kape, running a smear campaign against Proton, and hiring known scammers.

Imprint9816,

The server seizure is still a real world test. If you chose not to believe it due to no outside confirmation that’s totally fair.

Even so, I would argue there is no evidence of anything deceptive going on at AirVPN or any reason not to trust them whereas PIA has an objectively sketchy past and known awful ownership.

I’m an AirVPN user so obviously my opinion on this is not exactly objective.

Imprint9816,

It was owned by his company (London Trust Media) until Kape bought it in 2019. PIA was $30M in debt, which was probably a big reason for the sale.

Free as in beer - Free in the sense of costing no money.

Free as in speech - Free in the sense of having no restrictions; libre.

How to de google or create a more private experience with pixel 8

So recently bought the Pixel 8 with my previous carrier being Verizon and was going to put Grapheneos on it but I had no idea that Verizon locks the boot loaders of their devices even though google does not. What are some things I can do to de google the device or make it more private like Grapheneos would. Or am I out of luck....

Imprint9816,

I think this is only referring to being carrier unlocked. The bootloader remains locked regardless. Atleast thats how it was with my old Pixel 4.

Looking for a website like tracker control app

Not to long ago I had a website that functioned like the tracker control app. When using the site it would test against a list of trackers and tell me what my 1Blocker app is actively blocking. I cannot for the life of me remember the url or find it. I’m hoping someone here knows what I’m looking for. TIA

Imprint9816,

Cool site. Scored 92% using Vanadium browser on GrapheneOS

Imprint9816,

Oh for sure but I don’t think the ublock extension works for vanadium

AirVPN discloses server seized in 2015 (airvpn.org)

“We can disclose only now that we had a server in Toronto seized in 2015, initially without our knowledge. Maybe a court order was served to the datacenter. For about 10 days we did not understand what happened to the server, which did not respond, while the datacenter did not provide information....

Imprint9816,

Yeah the whole thing is odd, especially since they disclosed it as a response instead of in the disclosure thread the first comment mentioned.

Imprint9816,

Yeah disclosure is always good its just odd the way they handled it

-no official post (yet)

-makes the announcement as a reply to a forum post even though they have a specific forum thread for this exact thing

-all of a sudden has a 7 year wait time on disclosures policy

-not written very professionally (i tend to assume english is a 2nd language for the staff but still as an orginization the staff should be a bit more refined).

I’m a user of airvpn. I like them but they do odd things like this, or being very obtuse about why they wont get audited.

Imprint9816,

Stop seeding the torrents they mention. Use a VPN, verify it is bound to your torrent client.

Imprint9816, (edited )

I think there is a common misconception that LineageOS is a good rom for privacy when in fact its really meant for keeping an old phone useful and does not provide much in the way of added privacy or security.

OP if you want privacy on your phone there are better roms, the trade off with privacy is convenience. Banking apps especially have issue with privacy oriented roms.

Imprint9816, (edited )

If all you want to do is torrent just use a vpn, as it sounds like all you really want is to avoid DMCA notices.

This is a good lesson in understanding your threat model.

Imprint9816, (edited )

Lol this country has some of the best state sponsored hacking groups and the ability to build nuclear weapon. Its not like they are living under a rock technologically.

The government just doesn’t provide much of anything to its citizens as a form of control.

Imprint9816,

Pi-hole for my home network. NextDNS on my phone.

Imprint9816, (edited )

This feels like a huge nothing burger.

The researchers along with all the major companies dont actually think this is a realistic issue.

“the researchers don’t believe this is a true threat — and neither do Nvidia, Qualcomm, or Google, per statements published at Ars.”

Recommend option for "full house VPN"? (libranet.de) en-us

I have an old Linksys router which I have read is quite "hackable" for setting up a VPN with custom Linux firmware (tomato, etc.). Everything I have looked up on it, however, seems to be about creating a VPN so that you can access the internet from anywhere in the world, but utilizing your home IP address....

Imprint9816,

Have you tested that the vpn actually works with mlb.tv? I know, as an nba fan, trying to get a vpn that works with league pass is exceedingly difficult.

Imprint9816,

I use cryptomator to encrypt what im uploading ahead of time.

Its one of the rare times where Google pays off. G drive is relatively secure and cryptomator makes it decently private.
