Finished reading You Called an Ambulance for What? recently:

"Tim Booth is shocked when his first emergency callout for someone short of breath turns out to be an adult man with a blocked nose. Far from beginner's luck, this turns out to be an omen for the rest of his paramedic career."

@bookstodon I'm looking for book recommendations for an 11yo who reads at a much more advanced level. He likes sci-fi. He has read the Hitchhiker's Guide series and loved them. I think he would enjoy some more 'hard' sci-fi as well. He needs something challenging but without subject matter that is too mature. Thanks for any help!

@kimlockhartga @tim @bookstodon I agree, though it would have to be on one of the streaming services. The ending isn't..... upbeat.

It's such a nice, low key book series.

@bookstodon I need #BookRecommendations please! I’m looking for low #fantasy recommendations. Romance can be there but I want plenty of adventure & banter to go along with it. Nothing epic- magic should take a back seat and it’d be amazing if the main character did not have magic at all. Best if MC is not royal/deity/etc.

The closest thing I’ve read to this is Intisar Khanani’s The Dauntless Path series (which is amazing and I highly recommend). Anything else like it?

@skaeth @bookstodon Take a look at Rosemary Kirstein.

Kirstein, Rosemary. The Steerswoman (Steerswoman Series Book 1) . Kindle Edition.

While they do NOT fit your criteria, the Penrec Novellas by Lois McMaster Bujold have that low fantasy "feel".

Same with Minor Mage, Nettle & Bone, and (less so) a Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher.

Da_Gut,
@Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

@skaeth @bookstodon The Steerswoman series has some science fiction elements that enter into later books. But the first book or two should fit the bill nicely.

I know there is one niggling around my head, but its staying hidden.

I need to reread this one.... I don't think there is magic in it, or not much if there is. It's an awesome low fantasy book, regardless.

Da_Gut,
@Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

@skaeth @CommonMugwort @bookstodon I need to reread the series.

The Penric Novellas are interesting. While he uses magic, it's not like your standard European lore. It's more Mediterranean in feel. And its considerably more grounded than fantastic fiction. It has a very low fantasy flavor. Don't overlook it.

Your point is 100% correct... but I'm going to be sure you know about a potential workaround. If you use an Iphone, use the camera to OCR the text. Go to take a picture of the page - see the little box with the lines in it? Tap on that, and it will put a box around the text. You can highlight it, copy it, and if needed send it to yourself.

It's clunky as heck but a useful workaround for some things.

likewise, to bookstodon

I completely judge a book by its cover.

It’s not fair to books that may not have that attractive of a cover, but it is what it is-most especially when it’s an author or title I am unfamiliar with. The book below is evidence of this. This cover completely grabbed ahold of my attention. Not only did I read the synopsis, but I also knew I wanted to paint the other half. This is an older picture, but I’ve finally started reading it. While the synopsis is not one I’d gravitate towards, I’m giving it a chance, & all b/c of the initial attraction to the cover. @bookstodon

@mlanger @diazona @DarkMatterZine @EpiphanicSynchronicity @likewise @bookstodon I can't find the full context this is replying to, but the answer to "shouldn't it be protected" is "no". Copyright is an artificial legal construct, tailored in the beginning to very specific ends. Those ends have gotten muddled over the years. And copyright isn't essential - fashion is the best example of this, an entire thriving industry without copyright.
(personal claim: estates should have no copyright rights

Which Mickey Mouse? The racist one from the earliest days? The sexist one from later times? I'm not sure what Mickey has been up to the past 20 years or so, so I can't say what it's like now.
Lets see what creative and interesting things can be done by others, without the cover of copyright forcing "One True Path".

I'm sorry, I didn't make clear that I support Copyright. (But shorter time frame and covering fewer things).

Fashion does not equal clothes making. Physics (is one thing) holds back clothes making (cloth bunches, and twists. Humans are adept at micro adjustments).

How much influence Copyright has - or has not - on Clothes making is the subject of books, not social media posts.

Effective opening lines can also tell us about the struggle of the protagonist whose adventure we are about to follow...

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

I liked it, but it was a bit all over the place (badum-tsss). Cool idea of a young police officer turned wizard apprentice hunting ghosts. I missed more story about the rivers, i loved the parts about Mother/Father Thames and their children. I didn't appreciate the protag. being a horny teenager whenever he sees a woman.
I've heard the other books in the series are better. Does Peter get more mature? :) Is the pace more smooth?
