Come say hi here or over at twitch.tv/AzzuriteTV :) I like getting to know more people :)

Azzu,

I’ve used shop.fairphone.com for a while now, a bit less slick and more expensive, but I’m very satisfied. I already degoogled completely, can’t have a Google phone now :D

Azzu,

I don’t own a car, no idea.

Azzu,

Exactly. You don’t need to be popular with the majority. It’s best to get to the people that “get you” as fast as possible, and not waste any time trying to “play it safe” and appeal to more people.

Azzu,

Me and my best friend of 10 years still talked regularly, but kept spending less time together. We talked about relationships a lot and basically both agreed that marriage is not really necessary for a successful relationship and that marrying is too easy to be dangerous in the sense that if it doesn’t work out, you’re likely going to be paying for the other person’s lifestyle for no reason whatsoever.

Apparently we didn’t though, because at one point he came out with that he has been seeing a girl the last few weeks and is going to marry her in a few weeks. I and the rest of his friends were like “um, we’re happy for you, but are you sure you know who this person is and that you literally want to spend the rest of your life with her? It’s only been a few weeks since you met her”.

He didn’t answer and blocked us all and completely disappeared. Last I heard they did have the wedding a few weeks later, dunno what happened after that. It was his first girlfriend ever, btw.

Blanking on a term. I remember a protocol/firmware for wireless routers where the idea was to connect as many as possible to create a quasi internet without any ISPs. Help?

Basically title. I remember reading about it back in like 2018, I even remember a company that would provide crypto based on the amount of traffic you let through. Just curious if that ever saw any growth....

Azzu,

Everyone else is cheating, therefore I have to cheat to even the playing field.

Azzu,

They give a shit about not being a monopoly because if they were, they’d be broken up so they’re not one anymore. At least currently still.

Azzu,

And I use my root to hide my root from my banking app… Idk about the implementation details of this, but I kinda think the same could happen here as well.

Azzu,

I’m not sure how they have this when I only use e2e encrypted communication to share stuff with my friends and none of us use their services.

what are .webp files and why has my online experience been plagued by them?

I don’t know what a .webp file is but I don’t like it. They’re like a filthy prank version of the image/gif you’re looking for. They make you jump through all these hoops to find the original versions of the files that you can actually do anything with....

Azzu,

Basically everything on Lemmy is webp, btw, so you’ve probably encountered it a lot more :D

Azzu,

All programs that I use support them - what are these ancient apps that don’t?

Azzu,

I’m sorry, I’m a weirdo, while I upvote more liberally than in other places, I don’t just upvote because someone posts something. If it’s crap, it doesn’t get an upvote ;)

Azzu,

Nah, just because I don’t like something doesn’t mean that it’s bad. What’s crap for me is good content for others.

Azzu,

I mean, it’s all innovation in some way… Just all anti-consumer.

Azzu,

Yes, but “the controller” is one instance, and it’s certainly easy for one instance to allow a user to be forgotten. You can purge the user from the instance. Then they are forgotten, as far as the instance is concerned.

As an example, just because someone makes a GDPR request on YouTube to delete a video, does not require Google to actually remove the video from the whole internet. There are plenty of websites that archive content which are unaffected by that GDPR request. It’s the exact same thing with different Lemmy instances, just because you ask lemm.ee to delete your content does not mean that lemmy.world needs to delete your content.

If anyone wants to know what I said, obviously I don’t have the exact wording anymore, but it was something along the lines of:

“I don’t really see the problem if the community is really always verified to only have actors of legal age.

I feel like if you really have a problem with seeing stuff like that, which of course is fine, it makes more sense to block the community in question, not ban the whole instance.”

I see the viewpoint of it being an internal affair, and I didn’t mean to try to change anyone’s mind, truly. But I personally always think more conversation is good, never bad, as long as everyone is well-intentioned. I just didn’t see that point of view that I had expressed anywhere and thus thought it would be valuable to be there. If it’s disregarded for whatever reason, I’m completely fine with that.

Azzu,

There are current ways to block entire instances, either in the web interface through userscripts or in apps through their app-internal features.

Azzu,

I feel that’s a feature of Lemmy to not do both. I don’t care about microblogs. I want the sites that I use to do one thing and do it as well as possible, so I can mix & match what I use, and not see what I don’t want.

Azzu,

It’s completely natural for humans to fall into a binary thinking.

It’s evolutionarily advantageous to fully focus on “the enemy”, whatever that may be, and “the friends”, our own family/tribe, absolutely hating the enemy while absolutely loving your family. It’s what made it most likely that our genes persevere, if you give the enemy the benefit of the doubt, and they backstab you, you’re dead, but not if you just kill them first/don’t trust them at all in any way.

This concept permeates our society and you see it everywhere. It’s always “us” vs “them”. If your ideology “wins” politically, throughout most of human history that means you get to kill your opponent, while if you lose, it means you may die. So it’s naturally almost the worst thing in the world for us if someone disagrees with us politically.

It’s really amazing how almost everything about the way we behave is completely shaped by what made us survive in some form or another thousands of years ago. The only way out so far is trying our hardest to resist our natural programming and apply rationality, which comes with its own set of problems.

Azzu,

Sure I’d be ok with them, but they’re private, it’s almost impossible to get on them.

And then I was on one once, and it requires you to keep a 1.0 ratio or something. But there are plenty of power users that have a 50.0 ratio with their seed boxes, so they’re essentially “taking traffic” from 49 other people trying to maintain their 1.0 ratio. Even though I had my stuff properly seeding that I downloaded, only few downloaded from me, so I couldn’t maintain my ratio.

Azzu,

I’m not sure how I would ever find out that sign ups are open, in time.

Azzu,

I understand that private trackers are opening up, I’m just not sure how I’d ever know about it, which is what I meant with ‘impossible’.

Azzu,

I haven’t heard of “freeleech”, so that probably wasn’t a concept back then or at least on that tracker. It was quite a while ago.

Azzu,

Twitter is definitely not just a link middle man, the main use for most is to follow people that use Twitter as their main way to talk/make annoucements about what they do. Be it politicians, artists, event organizers, teams, players etc.

For example where I regularly see links to Twitter is when people/organizations announce what they’re doing with eSports tournaments. They don’t announce that anywhere else. So if you want to be informed at all, you must have someone viewing their Twitter feed, either yourself or through someone else.

Azzu,

I would suggest Nitter to you, and then subscribe to its RSS feeds.

Any launcher out there that has offline OCR support in recents menu, like the Pixel Launcher?

is there any launcher out there which has got offline OCR support in recents like the Pixel Launcher? Not talking about the Google lens implementation in recents menu here. I uninstalled the Google App from my phone using SD Maid. The custom rom I use(EvolutionX) does have launcher3 as its default(basically identical to Pixel...

Azzu, (edited )

OCR = optical character recognition??

If so, then I only know of a good app, dunno what you mean with “recents” and pixel launcher stuff exactly.

Azzu,

Then I only know of a good app, dunno what you mean with “recents” and pixel launcher stuff exactly.

Azzu,

Yeah idk for me that just opens my app drawer :D

Azzu,

Guess it’s something Google specific, never seen that.

Azzu,

Maybe you guys shouldn’t invite queer performers if you’ve got so many problems with them?

Azzu,

I’m using the web interface on Firefox and have only ever logged in once so far, when I made my account. It must be something on your end, do you maybe automatically clear cookies or sth?

Azzu,

Because the single only way to do communism is how the UdSSR did it, there’s no other way.

And of course it’s only possible to either agree with the whole of a specific ideology, or none of it. There’s no “good parts of communism” or “bad parts of capitalism” it’s only ever all good or all bad.

Politics is the mind-killer.

[Fortune] Over just a few months, ChatGPT went from correctly answering a simple math problem 98% of the time to just 2%, study finds (archive.ph)

Researchers found that ChatGPT’s performance varied significantly over time, showing “wild fluctuations” in its ability to solve math problems, answer questions, generate code, and do visual reasoning between March and June 2022. In particular, ChatGPT’s accuracy in solving math problems dropped drastically from over 97%...

Azzu,

You are allowed to edit titles on Lemmy :)

Azzu,

You don’t need microg if you’re rooted.

Azzu,

I completely agree with your text. But to answer your question, I’m pretty sure that the majority of people here (including myself) are pretty much done trying to convert people.

Others are going to make their own decisions. Anyone who truly cares could have and would have already found their way here.

If it comes up somewhere, of course I’m going to tell people about Lemmy. But I’m not going out of my way and spending a bunch of time with the sole goal to get people to go here. I’m not and don’t want to be a missionary for the Lemmy religion. If I’d do that with all the things in life where I think people are doing the wrong thing, I’d have no time anymore to actually enjoy life.

Azzu,

I thought it was Aaron Swartz?

Anyway here is a really good documentary about him and his death.

Azzu,

I kinda knew that, but didn’t get it because “I love you Swartz” was a weird way to say it :D

Azzu,

I’m using ublock to block large media elements when I’m running low on data :)

Azzu,

You can install userscripts on Safari on iOS. Dunno though if it actually works. That’s the cool thing about user scripts, they work basically anywhere if you want to.

Azzu,

?

Azzu,

It updates automatically through your configured update interval, or you can go to the page and click “update”.

Azzu,

If you can get any error message posted or sth I might be able to fix it, but I’ve got no way to test it on any apple device, that’s a bit of a problem :D

Azzu,

I’ll take a look when I’m back home :) could be that the context links aren’t really “links” at all, but “buttons”, which aren’t detected by my script.

If you look at the post, you see some screenshots/videos, there’s this little icon with two arrows in a circle that signifies if a link was rewritten, which is how you can check if it’s working.

Azzu,

Yeah that’s what I thought. This is how those buttons look in code: https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/8248c77b-3d9b-47d0-b8eb-ce442e798fcb.webp

The problem is that there’s no destination identifier attached. If you compare that with your name at the top of your comment: https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/6e9b6089-9602-41df-aedb-0478d4e16d44.webp, there’s an <a> (and href=) that identifies this as a link to somewhere. The buttons have no such identifying text with them, so I can’t rewrite them because I don’t know where they lead, it’s hidden within the application logic somewhere.

Azzu,

Oh, I thought it had something to do with the script. I mean I guess I could keep defunct instances around, but idk how useful that would be, and how to verify that the domain didn’t change to something completely unrelated…

Azzu,

The fact that it did ask you to set home once at least means that it’s running. It’s likely running into an error somewhere.

Honestly iOS and Safari (and Apple in general) were one of the worst developer experiences I’ve ever come across, which is why I’ve not looked into it at all so far … Actually I have looked into it just now, and I basically need an Apple device to do anything. Or virtualize Mac os which then virtualizes iOS, which probably costs some hours to all set up, yay. I hate this shitty company and its overpriced garbage.

So yeah, sorry for that rant… but if you could search for some way to open the debug console of Safari and see some sort of error message I could probably do something. Apparently it’s somewhere in the advanced/developer settings.
