What are your thoughts on Microblogs vs threads? (kbin.social)

When I first joined Kbin I posted threads due to being a reddit refugee but have started posting microblogs as time went on. I have also noticed some magazines have more threads while others have more microblog posts. For example kbinmeta has more threads while the most active magazine I moderate has mostly microblogs.

Yeah, and on has room to grow, I completely agree. While I've tried getting familiar with it in the past, I am by no means an authority on the subject. In fact, this back-and-forth was already helpful for teaching me a bit more. If you feel strongly about this, I might suggest bringing it up here, so that Ernest can look into it when he has time. However, if you'd rather not, then I may find some time to try putting something together later.

Should search on the Fediverse be opt-in or opt-out?

Google doesn't care if you want search to be opt-in.

The difference between 'privacy' and 'obscurity'.

ATOMICPOET: "[some] people believe their posts [on the Fediverse] aren't discoverable because when you do a search for them on Mastodon you can't find them." "But — here's the problem. Google still indexes those posts. And people really only discover that — really after the fact, right? I've had a number of people talk to me and they've said to me — "hey can you remove stuff from your server because Google is indexing that stuff", right?" "And — this is a problem with the Fediverse. The Fediverse exists It exists because — well, federation means you're copying stuff from one server to another server, right?" "And if you've opted to — there's different levels of visibility on the Fediverse, right? So there's obviously "direct", in which you send a message and only one person — the person you tag — actually only the people you tag see those messages. Those are, those are direct visibility. The next one is "followers only" — So only people who follow you can see your posts, right?Okay. And then there is "unlisted" where you don't have to be a follower to see a post, but it does not show up in public timelines. Okay. " Now, so far so good — the final rung of visibility is "public", right? I've had a lot of people send public posts on the Fediverse and they believe that they're not being indexed. But unfortunately they are. And you know, it's hard to explain to these people, to a lot of people how, you know — simply how privacy works because — I get the sense quite ..."

I've been talking about how AI will directly lead to an Idiocracy (2006) scenario for some time, but today's update to the "can you melt eggs?" saga is as clear an illustration of how as I think it's possible to ever have.

Quora's AI answers made up the melting point of eggs, and then Google picked it up and responded affirmatively that you can indeed melt eggs.

Then people wrote articles about how stupid it is that Google says eggs can melt. Then Google fixes the answer.

Then Google ingests an article about how stupid it is that Google says you can melt eggs, and suddenly Google starts answering affirmatively again that you can melt eggs, citing the article about how stupid Google is for thinking you can melt eggs.

@nyquildotorg I guess #Google's #Search is indeed unfixably #Enshittified beyond useable and people should switch to better options like #DuckDuckGo...

It’s not just an issue for the government. Banks will not open accounts for you if you aren’t registered with the state you do business in. If you already have accounts and they find out you are no longer registered, they close your accounts.

No, you can’t use an old registration. They check an online database with the secretary of state. It updates daily.

If you'd like your (public) posts to appear in search results on Mastodon, remember that you need to opt-in. Edit Profile → Privacy and Reach → Include public posts in search results. 14K people have opted-in so far!

@Gargron

For those looking for setting, or checking, the option on the Web interface go to Preferences, Public Profile, Privacy and Reach and the option

'Include public posts in search results
Your public posts may appear in search results on Mastodon. People who have interacted with your posts may be able to search them regardless'

Does Mastodon search not let you find "posts someone made with a specific hashtag"? I tried searching " @iamkale" but got zero results. What am I missing here? 🤔

jlo,
@jlo@natter.social avatar

@iamkale It depends. Full text search would need to be on (for your instance) and you also have opted in. See the below which I hope helps.

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/network/#search

Edit - I think with v4.2 there is the option for better search as well.

Announcement

Full text search is now live on many instances running version v4.0.2-rc2.

It is "opt-in", meaning you need to check the "Include public post in search results" box to enable your posts to be searchable: Click Preferences (on right near bottom [gear icon]) >>> Click Public Profile (on left near top [person icon]) >>> Click Privacy and reach box (near top [lock icon]) >>> Under Search (scroll down middle of page)

OK I'm excited! Full text search across servers coming to Mastodon?! (And don't worry it's optional, if you want to opt out). https://mastodon.art/@Curator/110860346373127726

@richvn yeah agree, that's been so overdue. It's understandably a real negative to adoption by some.

Personally I just hope I'll be able to reliably and easily search my own timeline, which then serves as my reading list of interest! 😉

However, would also be good if wider community kept their posts searchable, as that should promote discoverability and constructive discussion of the literature.

Mastodon's search not applying to all posts is 'a feature, not a bug', as mentioned in the documentation:

Admins may optionally install full-text search. Mastodon’s full-text search allows logged-in users to find results from their own posts, their favourites, their bookmarks and their mentions. It deliberately does not allow searching for arbitrary strings in the entire database, in order to reduce the risk of abuse by people searching for controversial terms to find people to dogpile.

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/network/#search

I do understand the rationale behind it in that it makes it safer for people to share personal or political things to their followers without the risk of abuse from strangers, and the recommended alternative is to hashtag any post that's okay to be publicly found.

The problem with this is that there is no agreement on which hashtags to use consistently, and that people are not used to, or feel a stigma about, adding hashtags to the end of each post.
