When I first joined Kbin I posted threads due to being a reddit refugee but have started posting microblogs as time went on. I have also noticed some magazines have more threads while others have more microblog posts. For example kbinmeta has more threads while the most active magazine I moderate has mostly microblogs.
Yeah, #search#functionality and #syntax on #kbin has room to grow, I completely agree. While I've tried getting familiar with it in the past, I am by no means an authority on the subject. In fact, this back-and-forth was already helpful for teaching me a bit more. If you feel strongly about this, I might suggest bringing it up here, so that Ernest can look into it when he has time. However, if you'd rather not, then I may find some time to try putting something together later.
I've been talking about how AI will directly lead to an Idiocracy (2006) scenario for some time, but today's update to the "can you melt eggs?" saga is as clear an illustration of how as I think it's possible to ever have.
Quora's AI answers made up the melting point of eggs, and then Google picked it up and responded affirmatively that you can indeed melt eggs.
Then people wrote articles about how stupid it is that Google says eggs can melt. Then Google fixes the answer.
Then Google ingests an article about how stupid it is that Google says you can melt eggs, and suddenly Google starts answering affirmatively again that you can melt eggs, citing the article about how stupid Google is for thinking you can melt eggs.

It’s not just an issue for the government. Banks will not open accounts for you if you aren’t registered with the state you do business in. If you already have accounts and they find out you are no longer registered, they close your accounts.
No, you can’t use an old registration. They check an online database with the secretary of state. It updates daily.
If you'd like your (public) posts to appear in search results on Mastodon, remember that you need to opt-in. Edit Profile → Privacy and Reach → Include public posts in search results. 14K people have opted-in so far!
For those looking for setting, or checking, the option on the Web interface go to Preferences, Public Profile, Privacy and Reach and the option
'Include public posts in search results
Your public posts may appear in search results on Mastodon. People who have interacted with your posts may be able to search them regardless'
Does Mastodon search not let you find "posts someone made with a specific hashtag"? I tried searching "#somehashtag@iamkale" but got zero results. What am I missing here? 🤔
"This article offers the following 11 quick tips that researchers can follow to more effectively and precisely discover data that meet their specific needs."
Full text search is now live on many instances running version v4.0.2-rc2.
It is "opt-in", meaning you need to check the "Include public post in search results" box to enable your posts to be searchable: Click Preferences (on right near bottom [gear icon]) >>> Click Public Profile (on left near top [person icon]) >>> Click Privacy and reach box (near top [lock icon]) >>> Under Search (scroll down middle of page)
Mastodon's search not applying to all posts is 'a feature, not a bug', as mentioned in the documentation:
Admins may optionally install full-text search. Mastodon’s full-text search allows logged-in users to find results from their own posts, their favourites, their bookmarks and their mentions. It deliberately does not allow searching for arbitrary strings in the entire database, in order to reduce the risk of abuse by people searching for controversial terms to find people to dogpile.
I do understand the rationale behind it in that it makes it safer for people to share personal or political things to their followers without the risk of abuse from strangers, and the recommended alternative is to hashtag any post that's okay to be publicly found.
The problem with this is that there is no agreement on which hashtags to use consistently, and that people are not used to, or feel a stigma about, adding hashtags to the end of each post.
Just in case some fools are still wondering how the #Fediverse might change #Meta, here's what their Android app betrays: "APK appears to contain […] data models indicating advertisements in the feed […] The sheer amount of telemetry #Threads appears to collect is massive, far more than any other fediverse platform or application client. Why does Threads need #Health & #Fitness data, or #Financial info? Why do they need your #purchases and #search#history?"
Anyone know of a standalone #FOSS#email#search engine with a web interface that's quick to set up? I need to search a mailbox that's far too big for client side searching.
What are your thoughts on Microblogs vs threads? (kbin.social)
