I'm finally watching the Foundation series on AppleTV. I'm really enjoying it. Although I suck at reading fiction its making me want to read the books. However the CW is that the series is not much like the books. So I wonder how much I'd actually enjoy them.

@weebdeluxe @bookstodon isn’t it funny how we all differ in our tastes. I loved the world building in Arkady Martine’s books and raced through them!

Kim Stanley Robinson’s ‘Ministry for the Future’on the other hand, much lauded, bored me so much I binned it half way through. Far too didactic for me

Good job there’s enough of us out there to cover all the bases 😂

See E. E. "Doc" Smith, Gray Lensman, Chapter 7. This is an Oglon if ever I saw one.

"It is not a bird, but a winged mammal; and is armed not only with the gripping, tearing talons of the eagle, but also with the heavy, cruel, needle-sharp fangs of the wildcat. And its mental attitude toward all other forms of life is anti-social to the nth degree."

As a heads up to my , I'd highly recommend catching up on any of my first six that you might have missed by the end of this year. My 7th, while still a standalone, is very much tied to everything that's come before it and will likely hit a lot harder for you if you're at least somewhat familiar with one or more of my previous works.

Let your imagination run wild Mastodon! Did I just become a level 2 Druid, awaken the Old Ones, or am I cosplaying Close Encounters of the Third Kind?

Oh goodness, one of my favorite genres! I love "The Years of Rice and Salt" by Kim Stanley Robinson. The story looks at a world where Europe is destroyed by the Black Death. What makes it so fascinating is that Robinson shows how world history would have unfolded in roughly the same fashion with some new locations or focuses. For example, a Renaissance takes place in Samarkand and many cities in our North America are in the same place.

The Penultimate Truth
Philip K. Dick

Part of the SF Masterworks Collection. Despite being nearly 60 years old the narrative around the manipulation of the truth feels incredibly prescient. Wondering whether David Whitaker had read it before he came up with story The Enemy of the World.

#Book 34 of 2023

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams

It’s some years since I last read this and while I remembered it fondly I think it’s even better than I was expecting. A clever, interesting story with all the usual wit of Adams and genuinely laugh out loud funny, which I don’t say often about novels. It’s very good.
