🤟
Which distro do you use? Most distros have their own dedicated chat rooms, and it could be on Discord, Matrix or IRC, with IRC typically being the one with most users.
Eg for Arch Linux: #archlinux on irc.libera.chat
or for Fedora: #fedora-workstation on irc.libera.chat
I've been wondering about this for a while, but couldn't find anything about it. What exactly happens after the screen turns off? Does the kernel actually suspend and halt the CPU? If so, how are notifications received while sleeping? Is there a coprocessor involved?
I'm curious. It would be great if someone could point me towards some articles or videos about this.
@itsfoss Truly owning my OS, and feeling safe using my software without the looming threat of unwanted amounts of tracking following me around everywhere 😃
At least that's how it started. After a while, I also fell in love with the Open Source philosophy as a whole, thus leading me to double down on #Linux and using it exclusively. Thanks to everyone who contribute their time and knowledge to these projects, you're heroes! 🦸 🦸♀️ ✊
A lot of developers reports they use #Linux as their main professional OS (only 47% in 2022 though), so let’s see why a Linux distribution is the best choice for most developers:
(Yes, not ALL developers, there are always exceptions)
@bookstodon
I use #Linux as the main OS on my computers, but also use Windows 10 on one.
For the sole reason to download the #ebooks I buy.
I play the occasional Windows-only game as well, but those I can do without.
I can't do without ebooks.
I really, really wish there was an open standard for getting any ebook, with or without #drm, onto any device without having to rely on a single piece of software from one company. #EU, do something! #DailyRant#PetPeeve#ADE#AdobeDigitalEditions
Why do you need Windows to get #ebooks? I've been on #Linux for years and have gotten many, many ebooks from all sorts of places...purchased, free, whatever.
Weird way to say spend hours fixing something that just randomly borked your PC.
by work, I meant actual work, and not fixing something.
Last time I fixed something was a few weeks ago. It was MPV needing an update(which was totally my fault, as I often forget to do updates) as a yt-dlp script wasn’t working.
As for something breaking, my experience has been the opposite. Probably because I don’t own any newest hardware and don’t do much gaming, or any other stuff that might require some proprietary service for optimal functioning.
Also, my experience with the community has been excellent so far. Even my basic questions(e.g.: dual boot) were answered promptly and nicely by the community(I mostly use #linux on IRC, or distro-specific forums like linux mint forum).
I’d suggest you to give GNU/Linux one more try. Probably try out something like Nobara if you’re into games. Or maybe Linux mint if you want it to just work.
Maybe you just weren’t lucky the first time.
And don’t worry about fake internet points. They mean nothing.
Though I enjoy and am currently using #LinuxMint, I wish I learned about #Wayland sooner. I didn't understand why game performance felt so off with my dual monitor setup for several months. I have since dabbled with an #Ubuntu#Gnome DE for some gaming, and Wayland support has alleviated those problems. However, I plan to look into other options when I've organized my data a bit more and establish proper backups. Learning #Bash, #scripting, #aliases, #workspaces and tweaking #hotkeys were also useful for making my workflow into what it is. Also, I wish I knew how bad #ProtonVPN and #ProtonDrive#Linux support would be. Despite getting used to their #CLI applications, the absence of feature parity is immensely disappointing.
On 25 August 1991, Linus at age 21 announced Linux project/system in a Usenet posting to the newsgroup. Here is original email that changed IT world forever. Happy Birthday, #Linux kernel.
On August 25, 1991, Linus Torvalds, introduced the world to Linux through an online post. Linus Torvalds developed the kernel, initially shared as source code, and later as bootable floppy disk images, becoming much popular years later!
Early distributions included Torvalds's "Boot-Root" images, MCC Interim Linux, Softlanding Linux System (SLS), H.J. Lu's "bootable rootdisks," and Yggdrasil Linux/GNU/X, a commercial distribution.
Akku hält ca 30 Tage +/- #Bastelprojekt#Jailbreak#Kindle#Weatherdisplay#linux#OpenSource

edit: I like matrix.io more than discord. I will try to stick with matrix.io but yeah, discord has more people in it though :(...
Today GNU/Linux is 32 years old (lemmy.ml)
Happy birthday 🎊🎉 GNU/Linux....
What are some things you wish you had known when switching to Linux?
I start: the most important thing is not the desktop, it’s the package manager.
