This is your seasonal reminder that all acorns are edible. Some need processing, others do not.

In October, I will do a thread on Southern Live Oak, Quercus virginiana. These don’t need processing but do need to be steamed in their shells to remove the nut. Last year, house moths ate most of mine so they need to be well-sealed and frozen after shelling.

Colorful sprigs of herbs and greens arranged artfully on a black speckled plate. In the middle is a broiled rectangle of tofu with acorn dengaku paste. Acorn dengaku with yuzu zest aromatic. Adapted from “dengaku.” Tsuji 192. Garden veg: Mexican tarragon (reserved), Okinawa spinach, red Hopi amaranth, summer savory, willow oak acorns, yuzu zest

Today is both the autumn eqinox and time for this:
https://www.skogsmaran.se/
Those passing my window on the finishing 200m are still running (at 12.15)
The less fit will come walking later …
We have had some serious rain this morning, to the extent that even the magpies sat under roof on the patio, so those passing are not only tired but also very wet.

Me? I stay inside preparing meatloaf …

Making rice in my grain cooker. I am making this rice today:

I ordered a variety of rices from CeylonGroceries.com (Canada and US), and this is the one for this weekend.

Rainbow chard with yellow veggies

I cooked this mix of vegetables as I usually do, and with many of the ingredients I often use. But I've not had rainbow chard recently, and this bunch was very fresh and large. Garlic stems are also not often available.

Slightly off-topic but we are in summer: I have an absurd amount of apples this year. Great recipes anyone? I’ve already made purée and Tarte Tatin…

(This is just the first haul of fruits that fell… 😱😍)

I made Indian naan for the first time today to go with Baingan Bharta. I love garlic naan in restaurants, so I was pretty excited. The garlic part can be improved, otherwise I'm quite happy with my first time naan ☺️
(Also I'll add coriander green next time)

I did it -- I made rice

I consider myself a good amateur cook, and I can make most things. However, I have never been able to cook which is not sticky and forms random balls. Tonight I tried effort number 1,453 and it worked. I had soft, fluffy, rice

Now ask me to repeat that effort again ..... haha.... we shall see another day.

From this great article on achieving deliciousness (via @kottke):

"That’s what I was chasing, that split second when someone tastes something so delicious that their conversation suddenly derails and they blurt out something guttural like they stubbed their toe."
