This is your seasonal reminder that all acorns are edible. Some need processing, others do not.
In October, I will do a thread on Southern Live Oak, Quercus virginiana. These don’t need processing but do need to be steamed in their shells to remove the nut. Last year, house moths ate most of mine so they need to be well-sealed and frozen after shelling.
Today is both the autumn eqinox and time for this: https://www.skogsmaran.se/
Those passing my window on the finishing 200m are still running (at 12.15)
The less fit will come walking later …
We have had some serious rain this morning, to the extent that even the magpies sat under roof on the patio, so those passing are not only tired but also very wet. #sarassummer23
Me? I stay inside preparing meatloaf … #cooking#weather#autumn#running
Here are the cookbooks I have been reading lately:
Grilled Cheese Kitchen, 101 Things To Do With A Potato, The Southern Pantry Cookbook, The No Mess Bread Machine Cookbook, The Art of Preserving, Canning and Preserving for Beginners, Can It and Ferment It, The All New Ball Book of Canning, Freeze Fresh, Complete Cajun Cookbook, Water Bath Canning, Meals in a Jar, Canning and Preserving Bible 2023-2024, Artisanal Preserves
I cooked this mix of vegetables as I usually do, and with many of the ingredients I often use. But I've not had rainbow chard recently, and this bunch was very fresh and large. Garlic stems are also not often available.
This is an excellent guide to marinating tofu - over 2 dozen marinades and excellent hints - that I got from @Leisureguy . I want to try each and every one.
I made Indian naan for the first time today to go with Baingan Bharta. I love garlic naan in restaurants, so I was pretty excited. The garlic part can be improved, otherwise I'm quite happy with my first time naan ☺️
(Also I'll add coriander green next time)
I consider myself a good amateur cook, and I can make most things. However, I have never been able to cook #rice which is not sticky and forms random balls. Tonight I tried effort number 1,453 and it worked. I had soft, fluffy, #basmati rice
Now ask me to repeat that effort again ..... haha.... we shall see another day.
From this great article on achieving deliciousness (via @kottke):
"That’s what I was chasing, that split second when someone tastes something so delicious that their conversation suddenly derails and they blurt out something guttural like they stubbed their toe."
