The scale of the Ball display gardens is really hard to capture. There seem to be spectacular beds of colorful annuals every direction you look. This bed was one of the first things we saw as we entered the garden.

Just visited the amazing "Gardens of Ball". These are display & test gardens at Ball Horticulture's headquarters in the Chicago suburbs. They are not open to the public, but Ball allows local gardening groups to visit on weekdays in August by appt.

I'll be posting a lot of pictures over the next couple days. If you follow me & don't want to see them, I plan to tag them all with . If you don't follow me, you can follow that hashtag.

People of and I need your expertise!

My mother bought blue passiflora, or passion flower, whatever you decide to call it, seeds this spring. From all just a single one grew but its leaves aren't like the ones we've seen before.
Is this plant still young, hence the leaves separated in three and not in five, or is my mother growing something entirely different?

All help, including tips for care, is much appreciated! :blob_sign_pls:

One of the things I love about hydrangeas is how long the blooms add interest in the garden. All of our varieties initially bloom white and usually stay that way for at least a few weeks. Then they "fade" to their other colors. The Annabelle hydrangeas are currently green, while some of the oak leaf hydrangeas have become a creamy light green or pink. Many of them will be golden brown in the fall.

I often post close up photos of the garden. When I take a bunch of pictures, the close views usually look best. But when I am standing out in the middle of the yard, it is the overall wider view that wows me. I wish I were better at photographing that.

After last night's storm (& 2.5" of rain) many of the flowers lost their blossoms. However, these are all doing well for . There are even a few still blooming.

One idea is to browse the hashtag and follow people whose introductions sound promising to you. The hashtag might also be useful. If you want to follow scholars and scientists, there is this list grouped by discipline: github.com/nathanlesage/academics-on-mastodonAnd in general, you can follow hashtags on Mastodon, e.g. “” for pictures of plants.

Today was the first really hot day of the year, near 100°F (37°C). I spent the morning doing garden work, and kept myself cool inside for the afternoon. Here’s a new bloomer in the garden today: a nearly eye-level, grey-headed coneflower, which I call “lazy coneflower” because of its drooping petals. I love how they sway gently in the slightest breeze without a care. To me, they say “summer” in the garden. 🌻🌞
