I like how quickly a non-project can spiral out of hand. I have a Packard Bell 386 here with a dying hard drive. So I get my roommate to buy me an IDE drive, but it turns out it's also dying and I have to back up a bunch of files off it. so I get a CF to IDE adapter, but then it turns out it needs a 3.5" floppy power adapter, and I don't have one on hand. so I build a cable, then it turns out I can't easily mount the CF card in the hard drive slot, because it's bottom-mounted, not side-mounted
@Alon@jon@DiegoBeghin Also, to be able to drive a car you need to be able to afford the upfront costs of buying one, insuring it, learning to drive, having space to park it etc. For some or even lots of people this may be no big issue; but for others it is a disequalizer, one that in a developed country should not be there (2/2).
@patrick@jon@DiegoBeghin Okay, but then the reality is that nearly everyone does afford this cost in a developed country outside the cities. This is because the alternative just isn't good enough - bikes don't have the range, carpooling forces you to depend on other people (in the US, people who take public transport to work earn about the same as people who drive alone; carpoolers are significantly poorer than both), public transport works at urban scale but not at rural scale.
@jerry First comment here! Well, one thing as a Mastodon newb is that even though I was signing up for Infosec the "homepage" posts the system was showing me on that page was the same thing as any other National News Media, nothing special, which was quite surprising.
I guess why start or in this case maintain a new online identity if it's gonna be the same ole, ya know?
👆 But, but, my mobile has a camera in it now; why'd I need another doohickey to carry? Plus my mobile weighs the same as one SLR lens and I don't have an elephant or donkeys...
The discussion about the #ActuallyAutistic hashtag is really annoying. It's the hashtag for Autistic people either self-indentified or officially diagnosed and if your research about the Autistic community didn't provide you this knowledge, then maybe you should do more research or ask the community before you start complaining. Who are you to criticise a hashtag that connected and empowered thousands of marginalized disabled people for years? (1/2)
Yes, as I see it, the structure itself is designed to accommodate and enable the large accounts, and it wants and needs those accounts to have the most impact and influence. It's all part of the planned structure. It's built-in. A feature, not a bug.
@jerry I do love a “nifty fifty” on an SLR, and for APS-C I love a 30mm prime. I have a Sigma 30mm 1.4 DC HSM Art that is 48mm equivalent on Canon. A bit wide for portraits of people, but it really shines for pet shots.
This whole business of infosec.exchange not having exclusively infosec content has me so upset that I will be posting more cat and orchid pictures to make myself feel better
We're going to make a #Mastodon plushie and it's going to be very cute! I'll share more details once the prototype is done—the concept art is very promising and our partners at FRESH have a good track record of making plushies 🙂
@Gargron Exciting. I am going to buy one and put it on my shelf and very clearly and earnestly explain how it should and shouldn't sit on my shelf, sometimes increasingly angrily AS IT NEEDS TO REALISE ON THIS PARTICULAR PLATFORM things work quite differently.
@Gargron certainly the #mastodon#plushie will be resourced organically and manufactured sustainably and with fair wages paid to labourers and all that, right?
Apparently unlike the leader of another social media network, I have never turned off satellites to thwart the military operations of one of my country’s allies in their attempt to defend themselves against an aggressor.
