NYT video about the Palomares nuclear accident over Spain in 1966.
A US h-bomber was refueling in mid-air over Southern Spain. Both exploded and four h-bombs fell onto a small Spanish beach town (2 into the Mediterranean). This film examines health consequences to the clean up crew.
#OnThisDay in #history - Annie Besant (nee Wood) was born in 1847. Annie was born in London, and married at age 20, but the marriage fell apart in a few years. She separated from her husband and began to write - she was an ardent supporter of worker's and women's rights, even publishing a book on contraception (for which she was put on trial and custody of her daughter was given to her ex-husband). She advocated for Irish and Indian Home Rule and independence. #otd#histodons@histodons
#archives@archivistodon@histodons
@archivistodon@histodons
@histodons On the other hand, "Wealth of Nations" is also the title of a mid-eighties 7'' vinyl from the US Punk band SS-20 (maybe widely known for the hit "Is Elvis listening?"). And "The Queen is Dead" has been used for book titles many times, for example from Kate Locke to Stan Grant. So much for Smith(s') reception for today.
"On a tear, and undeterred by mere facts." Donald Wright, president of the CHA, describes the maddeningly inaccurate and stupidly conspiratorial claims re: #history made by the leader of the federal Conservatives, the man who will likely become #Canada's next PM.
"[W]hat we deserve is an honest recognition that history is complicated, and always has been.... no one wants to live in a society where there is only one version of the past." #CdnPoli#histodons@histodons
@dairpo@histodons It's a fairly innocuous piece. Wright mostly just points out the obvious - changing the images in passports doesn't erase history. And that this whole talking point in the right's culture wars is absurd: societies re-evaluate their stories over time, this is what history is.
@ninetiger@histodons
One expert says no bc of the non-canonical material in this fragment - it overlaps with the Gospel of Thomas also - but I think it's worth more study for sure.
How can we be sure the other stuff wasn't also in Q?
Really enjoying this. It's both an impressively erudite and remarkably accessible retelling of #USHistory that centers #Indigenous peoples and obliterates a number of national myths. Highly recommended and worth imitating for historians (like me!) working in other national contexts. #history#AmericanHistory#histodons@histodons
@brian_gettler@histodons Thank you very much for the recommendation. I'm currently reading about the African Diaspora and the resulting enslavement of Black people, and their skein of American history. I have assembled some 30-odd books on Native history to read next. You have just added to that trove.
#OnThisDay in #history - in 1559, Sophie Brahe was born. Sophie was the youngest sister of astronomer and scientist Tycho Brahe, and she grew up interested in the sciences, encouraged by him. She learned about medicine, astronomy, and horticulture, often assisting Tycho at Uraniborg. Her astronomical measurements - made without a telescope - were passed on to Tycho's pupil, Johannes Kepler, which he used in his works and so she indirectly influenced Isaac Newton. #OTD#histodons@histodons
So I'm merrily working through bundles of archive records that require resizing to strengthen the paper structure and straight forward paper repairs when I get to this little challenge.
